Westminstenders: Neglectful Drunkeness!

The HoC has spend the past 3 years in a state of Neglectful Drunkeness.

As it stands less then two weeks from Brexit Day, there is no deal we were promised. The Conservative and Labour Parties are more divided than ever.

The government is in disarray as 8 Cabinet ministers plus the chief whip voted against the Prime Minister including the Brexit Secretary who had minutes earlier argued for an extension only to vote against it. He is now on the brink of resignation.

The DUP look like they may be about to capitulate and vote for a deal. But it may not be enough even then.

This is what the cliff edge looks like.

Who wants to take a closer look?

Thank you DGRossetti Smile
Songsofexperience pleased it's not just me confused by the Kyle amendment.

He might be talking rubbish again but just seen this:Brexit: No new vote on May's deal without DUP support - chancellor

I think the DUP have realised they are now in a very precarious position if their rejection of TMs "deal" (don't dignify it by omitting the qualifier) leads to no Brexit, but are also acutely aware what the implications of suddenly supporting it are. Boo fucking hoo. Unlike Farage, they'll have to live in Brexit Britain, which might be concentrating their minds too.

So last week, Labour MP Chris Bryant put in and amendment based on Erskine May parliamentary bible that says you can't keep on voting for the same (unamended) thing, over and over again. Bercow has to rule on this? Last week the amendment was withdrawn, but would there be a majority for it? So MVII wouldn't have to happen? All other votes remaining the same, May needs DUP (10) plus 65 of the 75 Tories who haven't yet voted for the deal, leaving 10 or so ERG Brexit-ultras. Surely there more than 10 of them?

citroenpresse · 17/03/2019 17:40

That's MVIII. Or even (please no, but there still is time), MVIV.

There is far too much fantasy over renegotiation:

  1. WA The EU said no further be negotiations

  2. Corbyn's "CU" is basically the all-UK backstop
i.e. Take the WA, but go straight to the backstop
and ditch the clause that both sides can agree on an alternative NI-only backstop

  3. SM+CU / CA non-starter unless MPs vote to drop the red lines on FOM and ECJ

Any WA has to cover the same things: expats rights, exit bill, backstop

All the EU would agree to renegotiate in the WA:

  • increasing the agreed expats rights
  • changing the backstop from all-UK to NI-only, because they wouldn't trust any UK govt enough to drop the backstop

So it it likely that only the PD would be renegotiated, to change the framework of the future relationship

Apologies for lowering the tone, but there are some resplendent pussies on this thread. Elementcat for next PM, with those lovely Siameses for Chancellor of the Exchequer and Minister of Defence.

Littlespaces · 17/03/2019 18:49

It gets more and more weird.

@Peston
So logically the regulatory alignment offer should not pacify and win over the DUP.
But sources close to the DUP tell me that - to their surprise - it may have done.
If so they would announce this entente as soon as tomorrow.

ElenadeClermont · 17/03/2019 18:49

Thank you for the lovely cat pictures from me as well. They help to keep us sane.Flowers
I also enjoyed Evie the Cabinet Cat's Brexit commentary.

Eurostar tells people not to travel.

Oh well, Leavers, you wanted control of borders, so the French are at least co-operating. Repeat to yourself as you queue: I hate the EU, and this is what I voted for.

Sostenueto · 17/03/2019 19:14

I cannot believe that Arleene Foster who is not an MP has so much power? This cannot be right surely that 10 people decide the rest of Britain's future???

TatianaLarina · 17/03/2019 19:21

for the DUP to accept the offer it would have to trust that a future prime minister and government would honour the pledge - which cannot be guaranteed even if May legislates for such alignment (because any law can always be repealed).

If the DUP fall for that they’re even more stupid than I thought.

LonelyTiredandLow · 17/03/2019 19:22

Can anyone advise how long it will take to have the EU grant a "short" extension? Seeing as we have admitted we will need it regardless, unless we WANT to crash out, wouldn't it be better to get the requesting underway? You know, in case we ask for it with a crap reason and they say 'non'?

NoWordForFluffy · 17/03/2019 19:28

It'll be Weds / Thurs this week, Lonely. They're having a meeting on those days.

67chevvyimpala · 17/03/2019 19:32

Dh just told me he may have to go to France in 28th March.

Hahahahaha

Holidayshopping · 17/03/2019 19:32

Do we know when the vote is?

NoWordForFluffy · 17/03/2019 19:34

Dh just told me he may have to go to France in 28th March

Bloody hell (or even, sacré bleu)!

NoWordForFluffy · 17/03/2019 19:35

Which vote, Holiday? The EU one?

SparklySneakers · 17/03/2019 19:35

@Holidayshopping according to the bbc link I posted earlier there might not be a vote unless the DUP agree to support the deal and they can be pretty sure of it passing.

@NoWordForFluffy the next meaningful vote

SparklySneakers · 17/03/2019 19:49

Not definitely going to be one Holiday

BlackCatFan · 17/03/2019 20:03

Does anyone know what happens if the "meaningful" vote doesn't go ahead? Do we just crash out then..??
