Westminstenders: Neglectful Drunkeness!

The HoC has spend the past 3 years in a state of Neglectful Drunkeness.

As it stands less then two weeks from Brexit Day, there is no deal we were promised. The Conservative and Labour Parties are more divided than ever.

The government is in disarray as 8 Cabinet ministers plus the chief whip voted against the Prime Minister including the Brexit Secretary who had minutes earlier argued for an extension only to vote against it. He is now on the brink of resignation.

The DUP look like they may be about to capitulate and vote for a deal. But it may not be enough even then.

This is what the cliff edge looks like.

Who wants to take a closer look?

Will the EU even agree to any extension?

Farage and some Tory Brexiters have been trying to persuade far right govt parties in Italy, Poland, Hungary to veto any extension.
Hopefully these British "patriots" have failed.

The EU will want to show they are giving the UK every chance,
so they will probably allow an extension - provided it doesn't damage EU interests

They want to avoid a succession of short extensions that would be expensive for business planning
and they want to safeguard the EP

Instead of the proposed 1 July, the EU may offer only the choice of
either to 22 May
or a much longer extension - for which the UK would have to provide a plan, including holding EP elections.

EU have been war-gaming extensions & even May falling

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/mar/16/eu-war-gaming-for-fall-of-theresa-may-government

Selmayr argued for a shorter Brexit delay than the three-month period
....
Selmayr advised the ambassadors that .....
a new incumbent in Downing Street could revoke article 50 in the period between May and July,
leaving the UK as a member state but without MEPs.

This would leave the EU “paralysed” as its institution’s decision-making would be liable to legal challenge, the bloc’s legal experts warned.
.....
Selmayr also raised his doubts that May would be precise in her request, adding “she never has been before”. 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

What were her reasons and logic? A "geniuely politically aware leftie Remainer" would be how Corbyn would describe himself.

Thanks Red

It would be fascinating to know your lefty Remainer’s logic...

BigChocFrenzy · 16/03/2019 23:47

Corbyn would be lying if he described himself as a Remainer

SwedishEdith · 16/03/2019 23:49

Well he might be, yeah, but that's how he'd describe himself.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 16/03/2019 23:53

Re the Kyle amendment, if this is chosen and passed, would the options be WA or Remain? Does the HoC rejection of No Deal definitely mean this can’t make it on to a ballot paper?

No deal: cuts all ties with Europe and that is what some people want more than anything. I suspect a lot of people believe that we can negotiate our own deals and have believed the message that Ty his will be easy.

I heard the "they need us as they sell us more stuff than we sell them," again today. I really don't get that logic if we need the stuff they are selling, like medicines and food.

PMK. Sorry I have nothing more useful to contribute at present, other than that I've noticed a significant increase in the number of empty shelves in the supermarket over the last week or so. Glad I started prepping several months ago. Now not so much Project Fear, as Project The Government Have Dropped The Ball.

Maybe they could issue the Brexit coin with a question mark instead 😂

That'll ignite the Tory blue rinses:

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2019/03/16/prepare-fight-european-elections-parties-told-brexit-delay-fears/?lisource=LI&lii_medium=li-recommendation-widget

Britain's political parties have been formally told by the electoral regulator to prepare to fight the European Parliament elections in two months' time as fears of a lengthy delay to Brexit grow.

In a move that is likely to ignite anger among Brexiteers, fresh guidance running to 23 page booklet seen by the Sunday Telegraph has been made available to political parties by the Electoral Commission.

The document states as fact to parties hoping to stand candidates that
"on 23 May 2019 voters in the United Kingdom will cast their ballot to elect 73 Members of the European Parliament."

LonelyTiredandLow · 17/03/2019 04:52

I suspect the 11 will go this week, especially if EU has it's sights on May (as Observer suggests). I hope they have someone else lined up though who isn't one of the Usual Suspects.

Re Farage and the march/limp/hobble, this clip made me hoot Grin I suspect they will have paid participants for tomorrow's leg a la Trump and we will see some doctored images of it popping up.

Very valid concerns from EU on extension and role of a new PM in the Guardian/Observer piece:
However, it has now emerged that Selmayr advised the ambassadors that in such a scenario a new incumbent in Downing Street could revoke article 50 in the period between May and July, leaving the UK as a member state but without MEPs. This would leave the EU “paralysed” as its institution’s decision-making would be liable to legal challenge, the bloc’s legal experts warned.

The meeting also heard concerns that the prime minister would be unable to offer a clear reason for an extension after what they regard as a likely defeat in the third meaningful vote.

Mistigri · 17/03/2019 06:11

EU needs to play hardball here. No extension unless it's a long one with a clear purpose.
