Westministenders: A Special Place in Hell

A quick start to a new thread (as I've not been paying attention this evening!).

May is looking to ditch the Malthouse Compromise. Cos its so rubbish.

The ERG look like they are splitting over it anyway.

Up to sixty Labour MPs could back the WA.

Half the ERG plus Labour Leave Rebels could be enough to get the WA over the line.

Donald Tusk, makes controversial comment by more or less stating the obvious.

I don’t post much but have been lurking for years. I’m stressed and depressed at this bullshit. I want to DO something to stop this madness or at least make myself feel better about it. I’ve signed petitions I’ve marched and donated. What else can I do?

Caucasianchalkcircles · 09/02/2019 17:30

Susan walker Funnily enough there was something on twitter today about how the same man has been on BBC question time 4 times and each time he’s been chosen to ask a question. Someone had also taken a photo of him chatting to one of the guests before the programme started. Needless to say he was a NI Brexiteer I believe !

bellinisurge · 09/02/2019 17:41

Nice tip @DGRossetti .

SwedishEdith · 09/02/2019 17:45

Here's the UKIP bloke who's been on BBQT more often than Fiona Bruce.

"THE decline of #bbcqt is degenerating into a national scandal

Failed Ukip and Orange Order member Billy Mitchell has now been on the show at least 3 times, asked a question, and then tweeted out by the show

AND he met the producer and Tory panelist before the show last night"

How many times has a non UKIP MEP been on QT? Hmm

Answers on a postcard.....

dontcallmelen · 09/02/2019 18:13

SusanWalker that Germany + should be plastered all over the papers & every available media outlet possible it’s fucking heartbreaking that this totally surreal situation is even being allowed to continue especially now that each day more & more of the governments/opposition etc incompetence is being exposed on a daily basis, I’m so fucking depressed.

Yaralie · 09/02/2019 18:14

In the years before the referendum only two Maps were ever invited to speak on Question Time.

One was Tory extreme brexiter Daniel Hannan (the one who said before the referendum "absolutely no one is talking about leaving the single market" but now promotes a no-deal brexit).

The other was Nigel Farage who appeared 29 times!

The BBC practically created the monster that is Farage, promoted UKIP and must take much of the blame for the mess we are in.

prettybird · 09/02/2019 18:28

Even since the Referendum as far as I am aware as I've stopped watching it , no other MEPs have been invited on.

This includes the lovely Alyn Smith, he of the chers amis address Smile to the European Parliament after the Referendum result. And it's not for want of the non-UKIP MEPs saying that they are available Hmm.

The BBC's "defence" (and the quotation marks are appropriate in this circumstance Angry) is that QT is not a single issue programme - to which the riposte is, quite accurately, that the EU (and our MEPs) is itself not just about Brexit Confused and why has Farage been on so many times if that really were the case? Angry

lonelyplanetmum · 09/02/2019 18:29

The BBC practically created the monster that is Farage

So true. Farage has had far more coverage than the Green Party. Yet the latter has had more gravitas, longevity and more MPs.

The leader of the Monster Raving Loony party and Farage should have had equivalent treatment based on success at Westminster.

Wimpling · 09/02/2019 18:41

Very interesting Any Questions from N Ireland. DUP spokeswoman getting little applause from audience on most of her contributions )and it’s in a Unionist area), questioner from audience suggesting that voters avoid both DUP and Sinn Fein in future getting lots of support.

Asking for help from NI posters... the Good Friday Agreement was negotiated with John Hume and David Trimble in charge, and now the biggest parties are Sinn Fein and the DUP. What happened to make voters move away from the centre?

I should know, but I don’t.

wherearemychickens · 09/02/2019 18:54

GingerPCatt, have you written to your MP?

I have been wondering what else I can do too. I would go on another march in a heartbeat. I have been wondering about taking a day off work to go down to college green.

Trade barriers?

How about actual Brexit Barriers being installed on the motorway. This weekend.

Jacob Rees-Mogg @ jacobreesmogg
Was this under implied pressure from the Irish Government?
www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2019/02/09/no-deal-ferries-doubt-irish-firm-pulls-deal/amp/?__twitter_impression=true
No-deal Brexit ferries in doubt as Irish firm withdraws its financial backing

Lisa O'carroll @ lisaocarroll
Rees-Mogg asks if Irish government was involved in cancellation of British contract in Ramsgate, a disused ferry port where dredgers were desperately trying to remove silt ahead of 29 March for contingency ferry route.

Steve Peers @ stevepeers
Did the Irish deep state install Grayling as a cabinet minister? Reprogramme the Maybot? Mess up the high-tech border with their Hibernian ray guns? "Sherlock" Rees-Mogg is on the case!

A man who makes Grayling look more intelligent.

Would you financially back a ferry firm that had no ferries Mr Mogg?

Is it your Irish firm that withdrew funding? Oh wait, your Irish firm is the right kind of Irish firm isn't it Jacob.

@wherearemychickens my MP is a remainder and has been fighting the good fight.
I’d happily March or protest but I don’t know of anything going on. I wish there was a proper remain campaign that I could join.

bellinisurge · 09/02/2019 19:12

Yes JRM, absolutely nothing to do with seeing the insurance premiums and going "fucking hell!"

PerverseConverse · 09/02/2019 19:16

I've not been on Facebook for weeks now but logged in today for something school related. I had a good nosey through the news feed and there was nothing at all about brexit from anyone or anywhere.

EXC: A senior minister told colleagues in a leaked WhatsApp rant today that the Tories will lose the next election because the party has been taken over by "zealots" who talk "bollocks"
www.buzzfeed.com/amphtml/alexwickham/a-senior-minister-says-the-conservatives-have-been-taken?__twitter_impression=true

Senior minister Claire Perry, who attends cabinet, told the women Tory MPs' WhatsApp group today that "antediluvian old sods" have taken over the Tories and will lose them the next election, turning them into an opposition party "of the white shires"

Claire Perry on male Tory backbenchers to the women Tory MPs' WhatsApp group today... "a bunch of old white men no doubt are enjoying their morning coffee served to them by their long suffering wives"🔥

Claire Perry on Tory backbenchers Chris Chope, Peter Bone and Bernard Jenkin... they are "zealots" who "don't give a toss"

Read this. It's EPIC.

Claire Perry has definitely scored a few points with me on this!!

Every single word is spot on.

Some of that will be the old advice of 'don't talk about religion or politics'. Brexit is a divisive topic and no one wants to start arguments at random.

That said, there were so many people who really seem to think that 'we'll be all right' whatever happens. The complacency of those who haven't faced any serious trouble in their lives.

RedToothBrush · 09/02/2019 19:25

My FB just died after the ref. Hardly any of my friends post anything on it any more.

It's not to avoid an argument. It is because their usage of FB has dropped...

... There may be a political reason for this.

BiglyBadgers · 09/02/2019 19:25

antediluvian old sods is my new favourite.

If nothing else brexit is definitely expanding my insult collection.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/02/2019 19:35

I remember that misogynist fuckwit Chope blocking the upskirting bill and previous legislation to protect women,
but hadn't realised he was also blocking anti-FGM legislation.

Evil bastard who hates women 😡
no wonder Claire Perry has had enough of pandering to MPs like him.

She seems to think they have taken over the Tory party - and she's in a better position to know that than we are.

Ciaran Jenkins @C4Ciaran
Free healthcare for UK pensioners in EU ends under No Deal unless there are new arrangements.

Govt advice is take out private medical.

I met Brit in Spain whose meds would otherwise cost €700 a month. Quoted €100K a year for cover and ‘terrified’.

£350million in extra bills for the NHS to look forward to.

OP posts:

Surprise surprise about the healthcare costs. I wonder if those who said that Spain need the British retirees are rethinking that...... I doubt it as that would require critical thinking....
