Does anyone have one??

No matter how many times I go over brexit in my head, on here, with friends, in the news, on the internet, I can't figure out how on earth the Irish border issue is going to be resolved to anyone's satisfaction.

Is there a solution (other than no brexit?)

I live near the boarder and nope there is none!

Border in the Irish Sea or no Brexit, those are the only solutions.
Former will never get agreement so option 2 it is!

How would a border in the sea work?

Border in the sea is what may was proposing. So NI would have special status and stay within EU laws. Then boarder checks for planes/boats for people and goods
DUP mainly don't like this as it aligns NI more with ROI and puts differences between NI and the rest of the UK and see it as a step closer to an all Ireland. However they make my temp rise with this nonsense as what about them voting no to women's rights to have abortions or Gay marriage rights. This makes us different from the rest of the UK

There is no solution. Border in the sea which the DUP will never agree to as they want NI to be treated like the rest of the UK after Brexit or a border with custom checks which negates the Good Friday agreement. A complete fuck up. Cameron and his cronies would have known this but never imagined leave would win. If he hadn't been so scared of losing votes to UKIP and eurosceptics among his own party he would never have called the stupid referendum.

Customs checks for goods coming in and out of northern irish seaports. It would just apply to goods, not people, capital, services etc.
Effectively means NI stays in single market whilst rest of UK leaves. Hence it’s never going to fly politically, even though NI would probably benefit economically.
I live in NI and would support this (although prefer Remain)

Put maybe the person on the street would but the DUP would never accept anything that made it appear that they were getting closer to a united Ireland. They need to be seen to have the exact same rules, laws,treatment as the rest of the UK.

Border in the sea and NI is a special economic are that has loads of tax breaks and incentives for inward investment so that companies can be have a springboard to the E.U. Which Dublin has done and yet somehow has stayed in the E.U.Makes you wonder if you can set your own laws after all .....

The EU wrote the backstop soon after we voted (maybe even before) , they have tweaked it minimally to make us happy. Then they made a suggestion that the EU and UK, look across the world at best practise borders and technology in order to work together to create the world's best invisible economic border. We didn't jump at the chance.

In reality Ireland will end up with a border poll long before they are ready. Arlene Foster risks a nobel peace prize for her part in the reunification of Ireland.

The GFA could be amended to allow for NI no longer being in the EU. But that is just so wrong that English politicians can fuck over Ireland yet again.

A border in the sea is workable and indeed I am not completely sure why the DUP chose this hill to die on. There is already a sea border for phytosanitary and veterinary purposes, for which the EU and the U.K. consider Ireland to be a single island unit.

@Mistigri , I think you need to do a bit more research as to why DUP wouldn't have a border in the sea. That would be contrary to pretty much everything they stand for.

Also look forward to DUP support for making NI exactly like GB in respect of family planning and equal marriage.

Yes@JSmitty . If May had said, "I'll back you but we need equal marriage and freedom to choose rights that the rest of the uk has ", I might have had an ounce of sympathy.

My heads been banging since last night trying to do a crash course in politics via mumsnet and google!

They argue that these are health and justice matters and as such are devolved. I could like it to the way slave states pre US civil war argued the abuse of basic rights. But that's hyperbole.
The irony is, because of corruption Cash For Ash problems the devolved government has been suspended.

Perverse NI is different, it is in Ireland. It is an English colony, eventually it will be one nation again. Just one problem - the DUP.

At some point someone will mention Gibraltar.

I think you need to do a bit more research as to why DUP wouldn't have a border in the sea. That would be contrary to pretty much everything they stand for.

@bellinisurge It would be more understandable if they were already protesting about the existing sea border which divides the U.K. and the whole island of Ireland into separate units for phytosanitary and veterinary purposes. Checks already happen at ports.

I don't think the DUP's position is consistent on this.
