Westminstenders: May plays Sale of the Century

Theresa May is currently in the midst of a campaign to sell her deal to the public. Unfortunately she appears that there are only 649 people she needs to sell it to, and that's not going so well.

She attempted a sales pitch to potential Labour rebels and succeeded in getting them to actively decide to vote against her.

There are currently 100 backbench tories who have stated they will vote against it, which makes parliamentary maths very difficult.

There is a rising support for plan b in the form of Norway Plus. This may make Remainers less likely to vote for a deal but persuade some leavers to back May.

The ECJ A50 Court case has been heard. Judgment has not been given yet. Its due 'soon'.

Next week the Withdrawal Agreement will be debated in Parliament with the vote due at 7pm on Tuesday 11th December.

Expect a rough couple of weeks.

Just sat down to watch a bit, first question I saw was an snp asking Corbyn if he would back an indyref 2. W T F, irrelevant and uncalled for.

Is there no beginning to this party's integrity!

RedToothBrush · 04/12/2018 19:23

11 Tories seem to have abstained on the Contempt vote. It's a pain to go through the list atm as it's just on the app and not yet on the website. I have spotted that Soubry was one but Grieve and Clarke were not. So interesting.

@davidallengreen
Why is Theresa May now explaining how we have got to this?

Hasn't she at every stage been "absolutely clear"?

RedToothBrush · 04/12/2018 19:27

There is an official app called Commons Votes.

It should come up later on the Hansard website. If it comes up tonight I will link to it.

Corbyn's speech appears to be arguing for Continuity Remain from the content of what he's said! Not an alternative Leave Deal.

@2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney - hope all is ok. I had my phone die during a family hospital emergency. Stressful stuff.
Hope the political news has been a slightly less unpleasant relief.

Thank you RTB

You are a legend in all this. Kudos.

But I am still baffled lol. Too much happening!

Faisal Islam @faisalislam
Dominic Grieve tells Sky News
“Can’t guarantee that No Deal is off the table but a device that was trying to manoeuvre us towards No Deal is off the table”

Grieve: it gives me no pleasure to defeat the Government - I have no desire to undermine the PM - but the only way to work through this is to debate all the options

On a No confidence vote you side with Government? Grieve: of course I do

Grieve: if this deal is passed by Parliament it won’t resolve anything - divisions will continue past March 29th... We need to extend A50 in order to have another referendum... remain option needs to be on the ballot paper.

Tested the “ECJ/ Grieve amendment means no No Deal and perhaps No Brexit so ERGers will vote for May’s Deal to get some Brexit theory” with a top Tory Brexiter. “No chance, it’s an affront to democracy, I’m voting against for my daughter”.

Robert Peston @Peston
Listening to @theresa_may it sounded like she will try to reassure Northern Ireland's DUP and her Brexiter MPs by giving a greater role to parliament in the implementation of the backstop - perhaps requiring some kind of vote to MPs, or Northern Ireland's assembly...

...(which is in abeyance) before the backstop could be implemented. This is speculation on my part, I should say. And I can't judge whether it would placate the DUP and Tory Brexiters

Robert Peston @Peston
I suspect as and when the Attorney's legal advice to Cabinet is finally released - probably tomorrow - it will be like that film everyone tells you is great but never lives up to the billing. It is just a few pages and will be a synopsis of what Cox said yesterday...

...in the Commons. But maybe seeing "there's no escape from the backstop" typed out rather than spoken will somehow prove more shocking and chilling to Brexiters and Northern Ireland's DUP. But I doubt it will either soften or harden their opposition to @theresa_may's Brexit plan

Robert Peston @Peston
@BorisJohnson: "I cannot believe there is a single member of this house who sincerely believes this deal we have before us is a good deal". @edvaizey says "he sincerely believes" it is a good deal. As all know @michaelgove is close to Vaizey, So this is Gove Vs Johnson revisited

Boris Johnson was asked what he offers the 48%. Stumped and then waffle.

RedToothBrush · 04/12/2018 19:46

Damian McBride @DPMcBride
This is the speech of a PM who knows she's done, and is trying to write her own obituary in advance. I think she's going to walk next week.

Sam Coates Times @SamCoatesTimes

Sorry to say it now, but I think the happenings today will not have impacted on very many people.

Most will not have a clue what is going on. Sorry, that sounds awful. But I really believe this now.
