Westminstenders: May plays Sale of the Century

Theresa May is currently in the midst of a campaign to sell her deal to the public. Unfortunately she appears that there are only 649 people she needs to sell it to, and that's not going so well.

She attempted a sales pitch to potential Labour rebels and succeeded in getting them to actively decide to vote against her.

There are currently 100 backbench tories who have stated they will vote against it, which makes parliamentary maths very difficult.

There is a rising support for plan b in the form of Norway Plus. This may make Remainers less likely to vote for a deal but persuade some leavers to back May.

The ECJ A50 Court case has been heard. Judgment has not been given yet. Its due 'soon'.

Next week the Withdrawal Agreement will be debated in Parliament with the vote due at 7pm on Tuesday 11th December.

Expect a rough couple of weeks.

Wow!

RedToothBrush · 04/12/2018 17:49

Robert Peston @Peston
Grieve wins his amendment giving MPs a more meaningful say on the UK's Brexit or no-Brexit future, if @theresamay's Brexit plan is defeated next week - by 321 to 299. Many Tory MPs think this means no-deal Brexit cannot now happen. Tory Brexiters say this is not true. Still messy! What should not be forgotten however is government and @theresamay opposed Grieve amendment. So she has suffered another rebellion and another defeat.

May now speaking to start the Withdrawal Agreement Debate.

I think that's right about the tellers RTB as there was a little cheer both times as they lined up and before the result was announced.

RedToothBrush · 04/12/2018 17:49

Mrs8 , I will do a proper round up on the start of the new thread if it doesn't get put here first. I'm expecting us to reach a new thread by the end of the evening!

Theresa is wearing a necklace of red gold ball bearings...

RedToothBrush · 04/12/2018 17:50

Mrs8, I've been checking Hansard and the voting apps but I've not seen anything on the divisions this afternoon yet. I am keeping an eye.

Grieves amendment has been passed!

GD12 · 04/12/2018 17:52

^^Fallon.

Buteo · 04/12/2018 17:52

Tom Newton Dunn @tnewtondunn

This means Parliament will try to take back control of Brexit, for example to (if there are the votes): 1. Stop no deal, 2. Join a customs union or EEA, 3. Enforce a 2nd referendum. Not legally binding on HMG, but politically will be almost impossible to ignore.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 04/12/2018 17:52

I figured out the tellers thing during Grieve II. Then realised I'd completely forgotten it other than there's a tell when watching today Confused

EtVoilaBrexit · 04/12/2018 17:52

Im still late but it was worth saying it again wasn’t it?

Robert Peston @Peston
Reportedly @DamianGreen and Michael Fallon both voted with Grieve and ostensibly against the government and @theresa_may. They are both May loyalists. So if true, what's not clear is if they think they are doing her a favour rather than embarrassing her. Byzantine

David Allen Green @davidallengreen

And dear Brexiteers, this is what Parliament taking back control actually looks like.

Grinchly · 04/12/2018 17:55

Absolument et voilà
