Even my then 93 year old MIL voted Remain, despite being a DM reading racist in other areas. She didn't feel fully qualified to make a decision but gave it a lot of thought and decided that was the best option. She's not especially well off, which perhaps makes the difference.

@bellinisurge

Yep, sure there are plenty of thoughtful well read pensioners who voted remain but generally speaking, the polling shows that as you got older, esp over 60, increasingly more likely to vote Leave.
Was why i found it interesting that out of five 70 plus patients only one was a brexitier, unless of course i 'm starting to see the first signs of denial lol!!!

JRM saying it ll be 50 years before we see any benefits, will only harden up on this.

Helmetbymidnight · 26/07/2018 09:35

really like to get in touch with someone that is stockpiling

@bellinisurge

frumpety · 26/07/2018 10:16

NorafromNorway have you tried Theresa May ? She seems to be all for stockpiling. Grin

Talkstotrees · 26/07/2018 10:26

Grin frumpty

frumpety · 26/07/2018 10:39

NorafromNorway or perhaps you could ask the traitorous twat Boris Johnson if he has used any of the money saved by squatting in what amounts to one of the most expensive council houses in the UK , on stockpiling ?

You could also ask him why the Telegraph are going to pay him £275,000 a year when he is such a shit journalist too, but do that from a distance or he might be tempted to pay someone to have you beaten up Grin

inthemixx · 26/07/2018 11:04

Boris Johnson...., what a joke. How anyone can make a living out of being an utter bumbling mess, is beyond me. Brexiteers like him because he has some traits of Churchill, but the physical stature is about all there really is. Gove found out what he was when he went to see him on important business after Brexit, but found him playing cricket, and wouldn't chat until he was bowled out, ...utter plonker. Frumpety, your choice of words was absolutely spot on for this bonehead.

bellinisurge · 26/07/2018 11:05

@Helmetbymidnight - I'm a prepper rather than a stockpiler. To be honest, I keep my stuff in low profile.
I agree, ask Boris or Gove. Or ask JRM's wife if she is stockpiling nappies because he never gets involved with his children's nappies. Or maybe their nanny.

I just clicked on a threat that was started at 11:01 (GMT) entitled AIBI "to think MNHQ are pro Brexit?" the poster said posts against Brexit seem to be deleted and she posted a link to the petition on a final say. I clicked on the petition and then returned to the threat, which was by then deleted as TAAT- it was 11:06! I am gobsmacked. The poster did not talk about a threat.

Cheesecake53 · 26/07/2018 11:15

so sorry, thread of course

SoloD · 26/07/2018 11:23

Farage reckons Jews are a bigger threat to the US than Russians?

How can he get away with that?

www.newsweek.com/trump-russia-jewish-farage-brexit-698486

SusanWalker · 26/07/2018 11:29

Apparently after ww2 the amount of people claiming to have been in the French resistance outnumbered the amount actually believed to have been working against the occupation.

I spent three minutes outlining my basic issues with brexit to my niece last week. She is now a remainer. I felt a little bad after as she then turned to her parents and said what the fuck did you vote brexit for.

SusanWalker · 26/07/2018 11:34

*Farage reckons Jews are a bigger threat to the US than Russians?

How can he get away with that?*

The sad thing is that racism is becoming more and more tolerated. Any criticism is shot down as it not being racist to address immigration/insert whatever suits your argument here. Along with accusations of being a liberal elite with no idea how the ordinary person thinks. The tables have been turned. It used to be if you were racist you were outdated.

Now they know they can get away with it they are pushing it further bit by bit.

bellinisurge · 26/07/2018 11:37

Farage said what? - Fucking hell. I knew he was a shit. Now I fucking hate him even more.

Quietrebel · 26/07/2018 11:45

I posted the below on anothrr thread but it was meant to be here:
I don't think there is enough awareness of what the alt-right is doing and its impact.

Bannon is alt-right and look at the influence he's already had in the US and here (talking to B Johnson, our foreign secretary until a few weeks ago!! And contender for PM!). He has his sights on the rest of Europe too.

Look at it squarely in the face and head over to the /pol/ forum on 4chan and tell me they're freedom lovers. Head over to those boards populated by frustrated women haters who hide behind pathetic memes to spread ideological poison and tell me you want them to have any part in our society.

There are well documented links between the alt right and
current nationalist ideologies as well as links between the alt right and radical anti-feminist reactionary movements.

So our strings are being pulled by middle -aged angry white males who can't get laid. Enough of that bullshit

DGRossetti · 26/07/2018 11:47

What took so long ? Was she screen surfing at the same time ?

Talkstotrees · 26/07/2018 11:52

Cheesecake, I think the poster got their answer Hmm.

Farage is an attention seeking agitator with far right racist views. So no surprises he spouts anti-Semitic bile.

SusanWalker · 26/07/2018 12:00

What took so long ? Was she screen surfing at the same time ?

I got a bit ranty! Couldn't seem to stop once I got going. Only managed to stop myself when I realised that I was scaring her a bit

Peregrina · 27/07/2018 00:57

....there are plenty of thoughtful well read pensioners who voted remain...

I must say, this isn't the normal description I would use of MIL. I expected her to fall for the 'too many immigrants' line. She surprised us with her Remain vote but we have no reason to doubt her word. She did give it much more consideration that some young people that I know, who had the most stupid reasons, 'er dunno, I thought I would' being one.

DGRossetti · 27/07/2018 10:25

She did give it much more consideration that some young people that I know, who had the most stupid reasons, 'er dunno, I thought I would' being one

Sounds like an argument to raise the voting age ?

Ironically, I guess there must have been some people for whom the referendum was their first vote, and they didn't have the experience to make a rational decision on their vote ?

A lot of talk of old people, but naive 18 year olds were probably proportionately more affected by targeted online ads ?

Peregrina · 27/07/2018 14:44

Young is relative, bearing in mind that I am retired. This young person won't see his twenties again, but does happily admit to not normally voting. So what made him vote this time and what was he voting for? I don't think he's especially racist, so I don't think it was to curb immigration. I haven't been able to get a sensible answer.

Valanice1989 · 27/07/2018 14:48

What happened to BrexitArmsLandlady? 🇬🇧 🇬🇧 🇬🇧 🇬🇧

prettybird · 27/07/2018 14:52

....and yet I know 18 year olds who had very considered reasons for their (Remain Wink) vote.

Plus 16 & 17 year olds who thought about how to use their vote in the Council elections (as we're in Scotland).

I also know a pensioner DM reader who didn't put any thought into it and bought the whole "hoards of immigrants/Turkey imminently joining the EU and the population decamping en masse to the UK/bendy bananas" DM line hook, line and sinker Confused

BrexitArmsLandlady · 27/07/2018 17:52

What happened to BrexitArmsLandlady?

Retired when The Brexit Arms closed.
