54321go Please DC got nowhere with his begging bowl out, was laughed at and sent on his merry way, perhaps the EU as well as the government underestimated the leave vote, yes I know the EU are not bothered if we leave, but perhaps they didn’t think or were led to believe that the leave vote had no chance

inthemixx · 23/07/2018 13:28

Rosstac, you message as though you think this is some big win for Brexiteers! Like it was some 'David and Goliath' fight were the little underdog won, and who will now live on, happily ever after. Does it matter if the EU underestimated the leave vote, or thought the leave vote had no chance? Surely what really matters is what happens from now on? If you drive somewhere and take the wrong turn, do you carry on, because that is where you turned, or stop, and think about how to change direction to a more suitable route?

Quietrebel · 23/07/2018 13:45

@rosstac, especially as I'm convinced the changes brexit will bring about won't benefit you...

Have you heard of Social Darwinism? It was the dark face of Victorian society back in the 19th century. Basically the idea that only the socially 'fittest' (In the same way that nature slowly removes the weakest species from existence) were deserving of a life. Only the rich may thrive, to hell (literally) with the rest. The lot in power right now have that in mind for you and I. The European Court of Justice though would prevent them from living out their dark fantasies.

Rosstac · 23/07/2018 13:48

inthemixx No you would think that you would turn around, but at the same time you wouldn’t expect some person in control to give you two options turn left or right, left carries on along that old bumpy road with no tarmac, turn right and you hit a brick wall, why would the person in charge give you the option of turning right and hitting a brick wall, knowing that you will not trust them again

DaisyTwirl · 23/07/2018 14:09

The SPAG of many Brexists leaves a lot to be desired and can make their posts difficult to understand but pointing out their errors achieves nothing; it just allows them to run away, screaming “BULLIES” (or bully’s?) over their shoulders.

Always funny to see someone slagging off other people's SPaG when their own is sub par.

54321go · 23/07/2018 14:41

I am not happy with the lousy interest rate that my bank 'gives' me. Should I get a gun and tell the manager to boost my interest? Maybe tell the manager to sell their grandmother or child so that I can have the interest I want.
The Germans and French pay high social taxes, I bet they would be REALLY happy NOT to be subsidising some of the weaker economies.
Life is far from perfect and the UK is at the point of a serious downturn.

54321go · 23/07/2018 14:44

DC did not get 'nowhere' he achieved about 3/4 of what he wanted. He was up against basic EU rules for the part where he failed, but did not get the credit for what he did achieve.
If your child gets 75 percent in a test at school, do you praise them for doing well, or send them to bed early for a week and take all their toys away?

DGRossetti · 23/07/2018 14:49

DC had to walk a careful line. A lot of what he "wanted" the UK had, just never chosen to use.

He had to behave like the husband who takes a car to a dealer to make a scene about the air conditioning not working with his wife, damn well knowing that the real reason it's not working is he didn't read the manual, hoping the dealer doesn't drop him in it.

Rosstac · 23/07/2018 15:00

54321go You could always move your account elsewhere instead of accepting the low rates

inthemixx · 23/07/2018 15:15

Rosstac, please tell me, what do you make of this report;-
www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/feb/07/brexit-north-east-west-midlands-hardest-secret-analysis

I'm in the enviable position of living abroad, although I go back tomorrow, except for the shit hitting the fan in the near future. What will you be doing, Rosstac?

Rosstac · 23/07/2018 15:54

inthemixx In my honest opinion and I know you will not like it, I have always found the Guardian and it’s reporters to be very EU friendly, all there anti government reports come with a spokesman said, a colleague said, no actually names, I expect the truth to be some where in the middle, I am a little tired of all this scare tactics, it started with GO etc and was proven to be wildly wrong, it is ramping up again now as we get closer to leaving trying to put pressure on the government and leavers, like most of the people I know who for various reasons want to leaveI honestly think that this is just scare tactics as no government would subject the country to leaving if it was going to be that bad, ( Dont bite just saying )Even now I think we will not leave and if we do it will be in name only,
For me, I have nothing, so have nothing to lose, if it is as bad, ( I don’t think it will be as bad as that) I will just have to try my best to get through as I did in the previous recession and downturns and hope we come out the other side with a better more understanding and a listening political system, one that works for everyone rich, poor, old, young, I hope a couple of new parties emerge from the crisis, instead of this put a red roseate on a donkey and it would still win in my area, I hope the EU does reform itself as I fully expect to rejoin it in a few years,
Don’t jump on me just being honest, I lost my house in the last recession, so I know what hardship is like, I’ll get my tin hat on and wait

pointythings · 23/07/2018 16:17

Rosstac if you read that Guardian article carefully, you will see that the data they are quoting comes from our own government. Yes, that is right - the government that is steering us towards a crash-out Brexit has done this work and knows full well that people like you will be hardest hit. That isn't political bias on the part of the Guardian, it's a newspaper revealing what the government is up to.

TheElementsSong · 23/07/2018 16:18

Always funny to see someone slagging off other people's SPaG when their own is sub par.

Where's the sub par-ness?

inthemixx · 23/07/2018 16:18

Rosstac, I am not about to jump on anyone for having an honest opinion. I can see a lot of what you say, and understand it too. I don't have anything to lose, except to watch the country of my birth fall away
into the international sidelines. I like to think of the UK as a very special place, and as an authority in world politics, and I only see that diminishing soon. I hope I am wrong, and we somehow get something out of all this that nobody forecast. Let's see.

pointythings · 23/07/2018 16:31

I think Daisy was referring to the use of 'Bully's' which is a clear mis-spelling that I took to be absolutely deliberate and ironic, given that the person who wrote the post has immaculate SPAG normally. Smile

But I do not think mocking people's SPAG is very constructive because the poster in question may well have dyslexia.

54321go · 23/07/2018 16:31

There are government reports, stating that Brexit will be very damaging financially and that there are very good reasons that the 'demands' being spouted by various members of the government aren't actually achievable. The fact the Gov doesn't read, understand or listen to it's own legal and professional teams is truly appalling.

TheElementsSong · 23/07/2018 16:38

Yes I thought that was what she was getting at, and was having a sneaky snigger that she thought she'd got one over Grin

DaisyTwirl · 23/07/2018 19:37

No, I wasn't.
No, they don't.

DaisyTwirl · 23/07/2018 19:43

It's funny how there was an immediate 'sneaky snigger' wrt the notion that I may have misinterpreted the sarcasm, yet not a whisper wrt the blatant (& wilful?) misrepresentation of Gillian Duffy's exchange with Gordon Brown.

It appears to be totes ok for the 'right-on' remain contingent to snigger, mock & slag off people they think are 'lower' than them in some way.

Cupofteaandtoilet · 23/07/2018 19:44

Nice derailing there Daisy.

Discussion about the marvellousness that is Brexit anyone?

DaisyTwirl · 23/07/2018 19:45

Derailing?
I was mentioned in some posts, I responded.

TheElementsSong · 23/07/2018 20:08

Look! A squirrel! Grin

pointythings · 23/07/2018 20:11

Daisy you mentioned Gillian Duffy not blaming immigrants. From the original transcript:
Duffy: We had it drummed in when I was a child with mine … it was education, health service and looking after the people who are vulnerable. But there's too many people now who are vulnerable but they can claim and people who are vulnerable can't get claim, can't get it.

And immediately afterwards:

Duffy: You can't say anything about the immigrants because you're saying that you're … but all these eastern European what are coming in, where are they flocking from?

Strong implication that people can't get benefits because of immigrants there. Can't see any other way of interpreting that. And 'Where are they flocking from' sounds pretty damn bigoted to me. Much like Katie Hopkins calling migrants vermin.

Being concerned about immigration is one thing. Using pejorative terms like 'flocking' and 'vermin' - yeah, that pretty much makes you a bigot.

DaisyTwirl · 23/07/2018 20:17

No.
Your interpretation only.
Two different topics, not conflated by Gillian at all.

And 'Where are they flocking from' sounds pretty damn bigoted to me. Much like Katie Hopkins calling migrants vermin.

No. 'Where are they flocking from' is entirely in keeping with her local accent & vernacular & made perfect sense when taken in the context of the time.

Being concerned about immigration is one thing. Using pejorative terms like 'flocking' and 'vermin' - yeah, that pretty much makes you a bigot.

Flocking = a word used commonly in that area.
Vermin? Did Gillian say vermin?
No. She didn't say vermin.
Why are you invoking Katie Hopkins when discussing the nasty, wilful misrepresentation of Gillian Duffy on this thread?

DaisyTwirl · 23/07/2018 20:21

Don't bother answering my post btw - you've already made your position clear.

Anyone you consider lesser' to you in a social or educational sense is worthy of scorn & ridicule.
