You 'conveniently' forgot to include Gordon Brown's response in between the two bits you quoted of Gillian.
Presumably to make it more believable that Gillian was implying that 'people can't get benefits because of immigrants'.

If you actually watch the exchange, it is clear that she is moving onto a different subject wrt immigrants, and not continuing with the benefits topic.
It is evident by the change in pitch & tone that she is changing the subject.

inthemixx · 23/07/2018 20:49

Daisy, do you really believe that? Come on now!

Mistigri · 23/07/2018 20:50

but all these eastern European what are coming in, where are they flocking from?

I don't think you need context to know that the person who said this (a) thinks there are too many immigrants ("flocking") and (b) doesn't know much about geopolitics ("Eastern European ... where ...").

pointythings · 23/07/2018 20:50

For someone who doesn't want a response, you do keep posting a lot...
I heard the original exchange on the radio and remember thinking (looooong before Brexit) that she wasn't a very nice person. But then as an immigrant myself, I do find the current fetish for blaming us for everything a bit irritating. Especially when it's followed by 'oh, but I didn't mean you'.

All I know is that my kids were told to 'fuck off back home' the day after the Referendum - they were born here. The UK is no longer the country I loved. And before you say it - if I could leave without materially and otherwise disadvantaging my kids, I would. Like a shot. I hope they will make their lives elsewhere, and then I will follow. Thank goodness they have those burgundy passports.

I meant the context of when this exchange happened, not what she said (I should have been clearer).

It was when there had been a period of unprecedented levels of immigration from the Eastern European countries following Blair & Brown's ill-judged attempt at social engineering & their woeful underestimation of numbers.

But Gillian didn't say anything like that.

Your words (lies):
"she was blaming 'foreigners' for all the ills in the UK"

Talkstotrees · 23/07/2018 22:04

Oops Blush Sorry I upset you Daisy. You may not believe me but my post was intended to be a gentle scolding of the grammar police. My clumsy attempt at humour obviously failed.

John Nelson, ex chairman of Lloyds of London (retired), tells it, as it is;-

No, sorry it won't do. Mr Nelson did not mention any unicorns so his views MUST be wrong.

DGRossetti · 25/07/2018 14:20

(lobs in, ducks)

www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-06-22/u-k-brexit-hit-already-exceeds-eu-budget-payments-study-shows

THE damage to the U.K. economy caused by the vote to leave the European Union two years ago already exceeds the size of the budget contributions Britain will be able to claw back when it finally leaves the bloc, according to an economic study by the Centre for European Reform.

Uncertainty caused by Brexit has already caused a 2.1 percent dip in economic output, even before Britain’s departure next March, the CER said late Friday in an emailed statement. That’s cost the public finances 23 billion pounds ($30 billion) in lost tax revenue, the think tank said.

The economic damage means the Treasury has less money to spend on public services, and knocks on the head the idea that Britain will enjoy a “Brexit dividend” when it no longer has to contribute to the European budget, it said.

(contd)

Didn't immediately see the relevance of ducks, the feathered swimmy animals, thinking it was a version of unicorns.

Well under normal circumstances, there's a slew of Brexiteers telling me I should be tried for treason ... guess they're all too busy stockpiling.

54321go · 25/07/2018 14:53

Well if your surname does begin with an R and the courts go in alphabetic order it will take about 60 years to get to you on the list of around 16 million, or more if you go by about half the population.
They are already closing 9 courts and quite a few judges may have been remainers themselves.
I sentence you to treason and your penalty is to live in the UK until you die (maybe quite soon with the food shortages, poor healthcare etc).

Bearbehind · 25/07/2018 14:55

Leavers should be banned from stockpiling.

In fact, they should be sent to the back of every queue for everything.

I've always said I'm happy for them to reap any benefits before Remainers do but they should fucking well feel the pain before Remainers do.

@Bearbehind - you sound like my dh.

TheElementsSong · 25/07/2018 16:41

I'm with you Bear! I'm happy to go the back of the queue for unicorns and sovereignty. And any true BeLeaver ought to be positively delighted to volunteer for any intervening hardship to prove their patriotism - plus, they keep saying nothing bad could possibly happen due to Brexit anyway so it's a sure win, right?

Exactly elements

Since it was all supposed to be so rosey, there's no reason why they wouldn't be happy to go to the back of queues, given they're so certain it's all going to be wonderful.

DGRossetti · 25/07/2018 16:53

I suspect we are slowly edging towards that point where some people "forget" they were Leavers.

Brexiteers will always be balls up out though.

Not there yet though.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 25/07/2018 16:55

Stockpiling will make interesting conversation around the dinner table this Christmas.

Helmetbymidnight · 25/07/2018 17:00

Just seen this poem on twitter: Grin

I have eaten the plums

that were in the icebox

that you were probably stockpiling

next to the insulin

for Brexit.

Forgive me

I did not know it would be

Battle Royale

When I voted for the bus

that one time.

TheElementsSong · 25/07/2018 17:02

Helmet that's excellent Grin

Helmetbymidnight · 25/07/2018 17:06

Isn’t it beautiful!

pointythings · 25/07/2018 17:19

That's a great poem. DGR thank you for that image of JRM with his balls out. Not.

prettybird · 25/07/2018 17:36

If they're going alphabetically, I'm definitely safe! Grin
