This may be the last Brexit Arms thread that I will host.

It was intended to be a non-partisan and relatively light hearted thread for posters on both sides of the divide, but unfortunately this seems to have proved impossible so far.

It is not supposed to be a place for the disgruntled Remainer to use as an outlet to abuse and kick out at their perceived enemy.

I will give it one last go in the hope that things will change.

So.... onwards to Brexit....

Who says the EU don't want us? We started all this nonsense and seem determined to see it through, it's nothing to do with the EU. We are weakening both them and ourselves with this behavior, one of the reasons the Russians have been in favor of it. I'm sure if we saw sense we could cancel this I am equally sure that we won't.

user1471450935 · 27/02/2018 21:25

Bloody hell desperately, I have 2 boys at state school, I work on the railways, member of RMT, oh look they believe leave can work. My wife works for Police, as a PNC operator.
The chances of getting out of the UK are nil, so lovely you escaped, we can't, so I can only sit tight and pray it goes well, I will do every I and my family can, NOT MUCH to make it work, and wait and see what comes off it.
Recession, aye we had one long 35 year one in Hull, EU membership didn't save us, so staying is going to either. They only want us on their terms, not good

GhostofFrankGrimes · 27/02/2018 21:28

But you seem upbeat about your dcs prospects whilst we are in the EU and choosing to ignore your own governments cuts that have made life worse for many British people.

mummmy2017 · 27/02/2018 21:29

I hope Hull can be regenerated, do you think that you will gain anything from the fishing, when it becomes under UK again?

TalkinPeace · 27/02/2018 21:31

China EU trade arrangements ec.europa.eu/trade/policy/countries-and-regions/countries/china/index_en.htm
One billion Euros of trade PER DAY

China Free Trade deals
fta.mofcom.gov.cn/english/fta_qianshu.shtml
NONE of them are in any way comparable with the UK
and the EU will not sign a deal until China agrees to stop product dumping

Desperatelyseekingsun · 27/02/2018 21:38

Liam Fox being having god status is the best reason I have ever heard for being an atheist.

People in a democracy do not have to just accept something is happening and get behind it. That isn't to say it won't happen but there doesn't need to be acceptance.

If things do get bad economically more people will leave, higher earners, those with skills wanted elsewhere. There are options for lots of people that aren't put up and shut up.

Doubletrouble99 · 27/02/2018 21:38

Talkin - The EU are negotiating an Investment agreement but not a trade agreement.
You also quite categorically stated that China don't have free trade agreements because they are a communist country! - not true.
But hay ho I forget myself, remainers are always right! Stupid me.

TalkinPeace · 27/02/2018 21:43

Double
Have you ever been to the parts of the world where Chinese "Foreign Direct Investment" is destroying good governance ?
(yes Antigua and Guadeloupe and Dominica and Tanzania I include you)
Free Trade Agreements between the Maldives and China are not going to be a meeting of equals are they?
China dictates ~ small countries agree
They may be FTA in name but they are not in reality

Doubletrouble99 · 27/02/2018 21:44

Londonmum - well you really have excelled yourself tonight lowering yourself to watch 5 mins. of a 40 min. speech and being able to analyse it so succinctly!
You don't even need to listen to any considered opposing argument before you make up your mind - brilliant aren't you!

user1471450935 · 27/02/2018 21:48

mummy
Fishing I think has gone, though the Holderness coast, spurn point to Bridlington, has a thriving shell fish industry. They also line catch sea bass near to Hornsea. Also Andrew Marr Fishing based in Hull/Hessle, has a trawler fleet based in Stanley, Falklands. Which is the rump of Hull's great trawler fleet, forced to find fishing rights in South Atlantic, after EFTA/EEA Iceland and Norway, shut us out in cold wars, then Spain/France won Uk licences. So there's another way Hull could improve.
By the way the trawler's are maintained in Hull and crewed by Hull men/women flown out. But it's only 6 trawlers.

Talkin,
Your description of China's trading deals/policy reminds me of something I learnt in social and economic history for my 1 of 2 O levels. Let me think, oh yes The British Empire and how the US treated Central America and Philippines after ww2, they must have been looking at our text books on how to build an empire.
Bit like kettle calling pot black
We and, your US, would do the same and probably will. That's why we need free trade deals for both sides, not just the biggest surely

Doubletrouble99 · 27/02/2018 22:02

At the end of the day Talkin you stated China didn't do FTAs because they are a communist country. That's what you said and you were wrong.
Oh and I was deluded!

TalkinPeace · 27/02/2018 22:02

That's why we need free trade deals for both sides, not just the biggest surely
What do you mean ?

Yes, the US and China will walk all over the UK in any post Brexit trade deal - hence my comments up thread.
Only the EU is a big enough body to take them on as equals

user1471450935 · 27/02/2018 22:06

Double and Faith,
That's the problem remainer's don't listen or view things with an open mind, I know I didn't at first, but then I listened on here and real life and slowly opened my mind.
Looking forward to hearing it 1st hand, tomorrow/Thursday sadly.
I try to catch abridged version tonight before bed and then I compare notes Londonmum, wonder if we will agree Smile

surferjet · 27/02/2018 22:18

user1471450935
You have to keep it real on here.
The MN remainers are not your typical remainer - I’d go as far to say they’re fanatics. They don’t want to talk about Brexit in a normal way, they just want to attack & belittle us.
It’s all completely pointless really.
( Which is why there’s only ever 3 or 4 leavers on these threads )

user1471450935 · 27/02/2018 22:20

Talkin,
At danger of making a twat of my self, and embarrassing fellow leavers, sorry folks,
I seriously thought the EU hadn't got a free trade deal with either A) China or B) USA
Think first one you hinted first one was half correct, but I thought the TTIP had killed the EU/USA deal, am I wrong.
I sure we only agree the Canadian deal last year.
So if EU is so great, how come with failed to get trade deals with the world's two largest economies and only just with an up and coming manufacturing powerhouse?
Genuine question, I'm no economist and only read tabloid business sections, plus BBC/itv business coverage.
Surely deals with the 2 biggest economies would be a priority, or have with just hidden behind our cosy SM/CU block to protect us, whilst doing similar deals to China with smaller countries?

TalkinPeace · 27/02/2018 22:29

user147
So if EU is so great, how come with failed to get trade deals with the world's two largest economies and only just with an up and coming manufacturing powerhouse?
Excellent question and I shall try to answer clearly.

The USA is a notorious trade bully
(even before Trump came on the scene) : if you look at deals like NAFTA, they constantly kick at the traces.
When GATT was replaced by the WTO, the US has tried to bully it and is currently trying to stop the WTO from being able to reach rulings.

A free trade deal with the USA would involve a significant weakening in environmental, health, job rights and privacy regulations here.
The fact that the EU will not roll over to US bullying is why TTIP failed and why the TPP could not roll Japan over.

China has never respected the Intellectual Property of any other country.
It was only allowed into the WTO after promising to start obeying international laws
and it constantly breaks them
hence why everybody else has to keep bringing in "anti dumping" measures against them.
Again only BIG groupings have the clout to hold China to account.
The EU will not kow tow to China - so there is no deal

Again, its one of the things that keeps any industry in the EU (and UK)

user1471450935 · 27/02/2018 22:42

Surferjet,
I know most people I meet in real life talk about Brexit looking for it too happen, when, how etc.
No one I know wants to either stop it or rerun the referendum.
If we disappear from here, and I may for couple days, the remainers will think everyone agrees with them, they don't.
There have some useful posts, I hope people will understand Hull better, if nothing else that's good
Thanks for helping to opening my eyes to what could be a good future, we just don't know yet.

user1471450935 · 27/02/2018 22:51

Talkin,
Glad it was a good question, I have a habit of asking daft ones.
Would you say there's a risk of the EU doing the same too us, you know, following in China's and USA footsteps, and bullying us into keeping the SM/CU and Freedom of Movement, even when our government says NO, just polls before referendum seem to suggest FoM was an issue for 70% of UK population.
Sorry it isn't a leading question, it's a genuine one, as if the reasons not to deal with China/USA was they bully, it sometimes feels, TO ME at present, that's what Barnier and Co are doing.
Sorry I have CSE2 maths and a NDA in agriculture and struggle to see the difference. I am sure you and others will explain it.
Thanks in advance

CardinalSin · 27/02/2018 23:34

Liam Fox's speeches now arrive pre-collapsed!

bearbehind · 28/02/2018 05:48

Would you say there's a risk of the EU doing the same too us, you know, following in China's and USA footsteps, and bullying us into keeping the SM/CU and Freedom of Movement, even when our government says NO

We are not being bullied by the EU into anything.

We want frictionless trade and no hard border in NI.

That cannot be achieved without remaining in SM/CU

That’s really not a difficult concept to grasp; it’s the reward from being in a club.

You leave the club, you lose the rewards.

The only alternative is you pay separately for certain privileges, ie BINO.

Why are Leavers so quick to play the bully card all the time.

Not being allowed to have your cake and eat it is not bullying.

Not a single Leaver has come up with s practical way of leaving SM/ CU whilst maintaining frictionless trade and no hard border.

You all just seem to think we should get our own way because we’re special.

What is your reason for thinking it should be ok to have the benefits of membership without the commitments user?

surferjet · 28/02/2018 07:24

Good morning leavers Brew
I know this is a Brexit related thread ,but what do we think of this?

A transgender former L’Oreal Paris model who was sacked by the cosmetics giant for saying “all white people” are racist has been appointed by a Labour frontbencher to an advisory panel

gussyfinknottle · 28/02/2018 07:41

I'm a Remainer. I hate the current regime in Labour Party. This included. Letting us all down.
