I don't think we have ever been united as a country except during wars. I quite like that about us as a country though , divided we stand , now there's a positive motto Grin

AgnesSkinner · 11/02/2018 12:16

Or even Divided We Lurch?

user1471450935 · 11/02/2018 12:18

Frumpety
Not sure, MIL side can "claim" to have fought with Nelson. Think that's like the 1000's at the Easter rising in Dublin.
Agnes, I thought hardly any one on here knew Hull, yes to ww2 bombing of the NORTH EASTERN FISHING TOWN (Hull)
most bombed place outside London I believe, tonnage wise.
We have a giant word search of Hull locations and Names on our living room wall, and a book about Hull's dialogue, called my "Sandies are Brannies"
I will translate my sandshoes are new, It's brilliant.
Sorry for derail.

frumpety · 11/02/2018 12:18

Put the negroni down Agnes , head up , shoulders back Grin

Bearbehind · 11/02/2018 12:18

We can't ven manage a united cabinet let alone a united country; that's how divisive this subject is.

frumpety · 11/02/2018 12:21

User my Fil remembers the bombing , he remembers going to school and other children not turning up because they had been killed in the bombing Sad

Idly adds 'ten foot' to the conversation Wink

LondonMum8 · 11/02/2018 12:24

come from all over Europe

That's terrible. Those European people coming here wanting their own laws, religion, blowing us up if unhappy. Must put a stop to that and look Globally instead. That's much better because the Globe is bigger.

AgnesSkinner · 11/02/2018 12:25

I have relatives buried in Cherry Burton churchyard, but younger generations decamped to the bright lights of Bridlington Smile

time4chocolate · 11/02/2018 12:32

Do you really not see there's a huge difference between 'setting out ambitions' and having a workable plan?

Absolutely, but setting out ambitions is the best you are going to get. A workable plan, what would that involve? if the EU stick rigidly to the rules then the there isn’t a workable plan bar staying in (which is what they ideally want) and that’s not going to happen and BINO would be the worst of all possible options.

Brings me back to my earlier willy waving comment.

We will get a bespoke deal of some sort or it will be WTO

user1471450935 · 11/02/2018 12:33

Sorry Bear I meant instead of using Ireland as a route into Europe. I know of goods which have been placed in lorries in Goole and West Yorkshire and ended up in the Eu, places like France and Belguim plus Italy, which have gone via Dublin, Why because there was a empty lorry to return to Ireland and that leg was then cheaper. But there is a growing port network on the Humber and Teeside that ships direct to all those countries. It sad, not good for our ports, but for my and our kids crap environmentally too.
The authorisation has roughly 24 months to be in place, If my wife can order a 25th wedding gift online from a shop online in London, Ontario and pay for and have it delivered from there to Toronto, and a birthday gift from same place to Green Bay Wisconsin, all online and clear all customs checks in less an 35 minutes, are you really saying your beloved Eu can't help us do it too,
Or are Faith, surfer and mummy right, in the fact that the Eu doesn't care and actually wants it to fail, so we rejoin with our tails between our legs

CardinalSin · 11/02/2018 12:38

By the way User, if you want a discussion on the problems of Northern Ireland, I suggest you avoid any of Surfer's threads. When we raised this very subject before the referendum her reply was the distinctly unedifying "Not my monkeys, not my circus".

Bearbehind · 11/02/2018 12:40

Absolutely, but setting out ambitions is the best you are going to get

Well you are clearly easier to pacify than me.

Are you honestly happy that a year on from A50 TM still thinks it's appropriate to make speeches 'setting out ambitions'?

She's done that twice before last year (Lancaster House and Florence) and we're still no further on.

What 'willy waving' do you see on the EU side?

They have stated their position and made it clear if we want a transition period we need to continue to abide by their rules.

What is wrong with that?

user1471450935 · 11/02/2018 12:42

Frumpty,
Grew up in house on a ten foot,
Agnes, my family are Marfleet and Bilton Grange based, Cherry Burton is upper class, MIL comes from Hessle Road, fishing stock, 3 relatives in memorial book in docks museum. Luckily not the infamous 3 trawlers disaster. Just remembered. Then Orchard Park, I associate with the "best"
We escaped to Thorngumbald and inlaws Burstwick/Preston (hu12)
Hornsea and Withernsea for beach days. Brid and Scarborough where exotic holidays Grin

Bearbehind · 11/02/2018 12:44

user sorry but I still find your posts virtually impossible to understand.

What on earth has your wedding anniversary present got to do with this

Could you pare down the waffle and make your points clearer please.

From what I can gather your approach is incredibly naive; you seem to think countries all sit down and talk and work out solutions on a virtually case by case basis.

user1471450935 · 11/02/2018 12:49

CardinalSin,
Bear mentioned it, I have suggested a couple of ideas. I explained my links, for explanation of why I would love to talk about, bear doesn't like my history lessons, Sad
But without History and content, someone much brighter than me said we are doomed to live it again.
I have a tenuous link to NI/Eire I also work with a man married to an Ulster lady. Nether of us are experts, and struggle to understand the issues, so we do I can see why most would do so, even wash their hands.

frumpety · 11/02/2018 12:50

I remember the East park splash boat as a child Blush

AgnesSkinner · 11/02/2018 12:51

In your example User you have goods going from Canada to the USA - there is NAFTA but it’s still a hard border with customs checks. Varadkar has ruled out a US / Canada style border.

Bearbehind · 11/02/2018 12:52

Sorry user but I'm out with your posts; I can't be doing with your life history within them.

I'm not interested if you work with a man married to an Ulster lady- what value is that adding to this thread?

If you just want to chat there are better forums than this one.

time4chocolate · 11/02/2018 12:56

Well you are clearly easier to pacify than me. yes clearly

Yes they have made themselves quite clear on most things which is why I have said it’s not workable.

.......if we want a transition period we need to continue to abide by their rules

Existing rules or does that apply to any new rules that they may bring in during the two year transition period?

user1471450935 · 11/02/2018 12:58

Bear,
The government and Eu have 12 months and then I think Mr Barnier says 18 month transitional period. Though I believe its in the Eu27 power to extend either.
So if the EU27, are honest and don't want to punish us, surely them and us, behind the scenes, can work an electronic border system to work.
I think I saw on TV somewhere Canada and US border where locals have Passport/visa details on a tag and its done electronically/ cctv monitored. Can't two of the worlds most developed economies work something like this out?
I probably totally naive

Kofa · 11/02/2018 13:04

User if you want to have a conversation about the border and the GFA may I suggest a good starting point would be to desist from using Eire and use its correct name in English - Ireland. Thank you.

Bearbehind · 11/02/2018 13:15

Existing rules or does that apply to any new rules that they may bring in during the two year transition period?

It applies to new rules too but why wouldn't it?

We need the transition period. Why would they agree to us not adhering to rules the other 27 countries have to whilst enjoying the benefit of SM/CU.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 11/02/2018 13:15

What are your thoughts on me starting a new thread just for leavers? ( the leavers lagoon or something, haha ) It would be a place purely for upbeat progressive people, positive about the future.

Id be up for that - for exactly the reasons you've given.

The repetitive Brexiter-kicking will happen there too as they can't help themselves, but at least it will be clearly labelled as a Leavers thread so the faux-innocent, wife-eyed 'but we're just discussing Brexit' will not wash.

user1471450935 · 11/02/2018 13:16

Bear
Can I politely and honestly ask what I have ever done to upset you.
I really don't like the way you attack everything I say or do.
I am trying to talk to people, I have a thing in common with Frumpety and agnes I spoke to them. Different sides talking, an olive leaf offered.
I have talked about immigration, vat, Ni/Eire Border issues, all brexit related.
So if you want me to leave, be honest tell me to piss off, I walked into work today at 0755, to an emergency which involved a burnt out car and possibly occupants, We have only just going again.
I have 2 boys, lost family, and I have used this thread this morning to happily talk to people and add my naïve thoughts, as well as dealing with that, it's kept me sane, and not wanting to walk out and never come back
You know nothing about me, stop attacking me please

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 11/02/2018 13:17

It’s extremely telling that you feel you need a place where no one can rain on your parade and you can all just ignore anything that doesn’t fit with your vision for the future.

The WM threads have been described by posters as the 'anti-brexit' threads for remainers, so what's wrong with having balance with a pro-brexit thread for leavers?
