So the good times are about to roll....are they?

I wanted to ask on another thread, but they are all bunfight-y.

I am a remainer so I feel very depressed about today. I would like some reassurance from brexiters about what I have to look forwards to.

I'm afraid 'taking back control' isn't clear enough to me, so an explanation of what will be different if that's the theme you will go for.

So far, since the vote, my family has lost £10,000s and my husband's current job/role has been placed in jeopardy. I have probably lost the ability to automatically continue to work in an EU country in under 2 years time (I currently live in Germany, though this was intended to be temporary). I have dear friends relocating out of London since the banks are shifting jobs due to Brexit so I'm not sure who I would be moving back to. My house is worth less and I'm less likely to be able to sell it if I do want to move. I'll need to get the kids Irish passports if I want them to benefit from the EU.

So cheer me up - we're set for a brighter future aren't we? What can I look forwards to?

I am shocked at all this dissing of imperial measurements. How on Earth do all you metric enthusiasts tell the time? 12 is a far superior number to 10. If I need to know about tenths and fifths I have a decimal base number system and fingers and toes. Shock

noblegiraffe · 02/04/2017 13:18

Time isn't an imperial measurement, it's base 60 because that's what the ancient Sumerians and Babylonians used.

howabout · 02/04/2017 13:25

Imperial measurements and degrees (as in circles) are all also based on the same system as time though surely? Just as long as no-one suggests outlawing any excuse for Pi. Smile

noblegiraffe · 02/04/2017 13:27

If imperial measurements are based on 12, why are there 14lbs in a stone and 1760 yards in a mile?

howabout · 02/04/2017 13:42

Everyone always wants to lose a couple of pounds and round down the footsteps in the miles ahead.

Anon1234567890 · 02/04/2017 13:46

Only Bear, your not the arbiter of which points are valid and which aren't. That's typical remoaner logic, just shouting down anyone who doesn't agree with project fear.

My point of view is as valid as anyone else's. And in this case it seems I am in the majority.

noblegiraffe · 02/04/2017 13:48

As a maths teacher who has to teach metric and imperial units (although imperial conversions binned from the new GCSE by someone who obviously didn't predict Brexit Hmm ) I ask school kids which is the better system and they always answer metric. Imperial units are stupid.

GraceGrape · 02/04/2017 13:59

I would suggest that only people brought up to weigh themselves in stones want to shed "a couple of pounds". I don't imagine it's common parlance among teens. I still measure my height in feet/inches and my weight on stones, but I measure my kids in m and kg.

(Totally irrelevant to the thread noble but imperial-metric conversion has been bumped down to the primary curriculum by our friend Mr Gove.)

howabout · 02/04/2017 14:08

noble I have a half French science graduate DH who refuses to talk in anything other than metric. Made living in the US for a couple of years kinda awkward. Our 3 DDs are bilingual in such matters, even the 5 year old.

Anon "The whole point is to be able to pass or repeal any law UK citizens mandate its government to do. I dont get the idea that if the EU pass a law that is 'good' for someone somewhere in the EU, whether the the UK wants it or not, then we should suck it up. Well we won't anymore, we want our democracy back."

Ok then, can you list these laws instead?. Or are we talking purely in terms of hypotheticals?

Anon1234567890 · 02/04/2017 14:29

Eeeeeowwwfftz, Ok then, can you list these laws instead?
Yes every single one of the EU laws should be repealed, as we are doing in the great repeal bill.

I get that you want to redirect the question to the pros and cons of any specific law. And thereafter claiming we should stay in the EU because that is a beneficial law. Rather than address the actual point that we should or shouldn't have the right to make, amend or repeal any law we mandate our government too. And in my opinion we should be able to, which is one of the reasons why we are leaving the EU.

So its not in any way hypothetical.

Kaija · 02/04/2017 15:14

I find imperial measurements better for baking.

Seems as though I was lucky that the evil EU dictators never found out and banned all my cakes.

Kaija · 02/04/2017 15:16

Dear God.

squishysquirmy · 02/04/2017 16:30

I'm going to measure all temperatures in Kelvin from now on. Just to be a twat.

Bearbehind · 02/04/2017 17:58

I've given up with anon kaija

It's utterly pointless discussing this with someone who's sole commentary is variations on 'rah, rah, rah, it will all be fabulous and I don't need to say any more than that because the details are just trivial''

I guess on MN expressing an opinion is trolling. Yea its easy to shout someone down because you dont like what they have to say. And that is exactly why so many people in this country have voted to leave the EU.

gobberz · 02/04/2017 18:09

Oh god you say so many words without saying anything at all. Blah blah blah.

Anon1234567890 · 02/04/2017 18:15

oh god blah blah blah. Sticks and stones

Kaija · 02/04/2017 18:18

Anon, if that really were the reason why people voted Leave then they truly would be idiots.

I'm sure they had more logical reasons.

Figmentofmyimagination · 02/04/2017 18:35

Those of you fretting over the uk's inability to make its own laws should get hold of a copy of yuval harari's new book - 'homo deus - a brief history of tomorrow'. He does devote one sentence to the 'brexit' vote - right at the end, in the section 'where did all the power go?' Clue - it's not to the EU.

Brilliant book if you want to step back and try to understand the bigger picture.

fakenamefornow · 02/04/2017 18:35

I think the Repeal Bill (they had to drop the great) actually transfers EU law into domestic law, it doesn't get rid of any of them.

Anon1234567890 · 02/04/2017 18:44

No Kaija I think (as I know a lot of them) that is exactly why they voted leave. But I dont agree that makes them idiots. Maybe some groups of remainers are so incredulous because they dont actually know or mix with a lot of the people that voted leave? That might explain the confusion.

I think the Repeal Bill (they had to drop the great) actually transfers EU law into domestic law, it doesn't get rid of any of them Yes that is exactly the point, they will then be exposed to the UK electorate to vote for parties who will be democratically empowered to change, improve or get rid of ANY of these laws. Democracy.

gobberz · 02/04/2017 18:47

What laws would you keep/get rid of?

Anon1234567890 · 02/04/2017 19:02

What laws would you keep/get rid of?

I dont know, but I would like them to be on the table and debated by the UK so I can make an informed choice. Things like free movement seems to be bad. The working time directive also seems to be a bit stupid. A lot of the CAP appears to be stupid. Don't even mention fisheries. I dont like what the Euro has done to countries like Greece. I dont want to be exposed to other countries debts. I dont like the EU banning products in the UK. I dont like the EU forcing laws on us. I could go on the list is pretty long.

But above all I want the UK to decide on these issues not the EU.
