Brexit

So the good times are about to roll....are they?

I wanted to ask on another thread, but they are all bunfight-y.

I am a remainer so I feel very depressed about today. I would like some reassurance from brexiters about what I have to look forwards to.

I'm afraid 'taking back control' isn't clear enough to me, so an explanation of what will be different if that's the theme you will go for.

So far, since the vote, my family has lost £10,000s and my husband's current job/role has been placed in jeopardy. I have probably lost the ability to automatically continue to work in an EU country in under 2 years time (I currently live in Germany, though this was intended to be temporary). I have dear friends relocating out of London since the banks are shifting jobs due to Brexit so I'm not sure who I would be moving back to. My house is worth less and I'm less likely to be able to sell it if I do want to move. I'll need to get the kids Irish passports if I want them to benefit from the EU.

So cheer me up - we're set for a brighter future aren't we? What can I look forwards to?

Maybe we should fall out with ICAO also, so that we can really go back to the old passports

Better still, I think we (just the British) should should go back to when we didn't need passports and you just announce loudly to the boarder guard 'I am British, my man' and they let you in.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 02/04/2017 20:50

frumpet

I have to have a mind as well!!! Oh god i am never going on holiday again

Deadsouls · 02/04/2017 20:50

I must hate my country as I DGAF about the passport colour

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 02/04/2017 20:51

No dead

You loooaaatthhheee it

Tanith · 02/04/2017 21:17

I'd love to oblige, PoundlandUK, but those stars have pointy edges and we wouldn't like people to get them stuck somewhere, would we?
Also they could be mistaken for (oh Horror!) the EU stars.

Sorry about that. Maybe felt or foam circles to represent the perpetual ones we're about to go round? Different sizes and we really could look as though we're going back to the early 70s Smile

woman12345 · 02/04/2017 21:59

Aren't they pretty redundant anyway, with our every movement and thought search tracked on t'internet?

I'd be happy to use my Tesco club card and draw an artist's impression of myself on the back.

Deadsouls · 02/04/2017 22:12

There's a really funny thread in chat about protecting leave voters from hate speech Grin
For real

Peregrina · 02/04/2017 22:24

Please tell me that there is an EU law against hate speech. That the Brexshitters want scrapped. That would make my day!

woman12345 · 02/04/2017 22:27

here you go Peregrina Grin

Do you think this is an April Fool?

Far right demonstration this weekend attracted 300 people (compare with 100,000 for the March for Europe).

Here is a highlight:

"Paul Golding, the leader of Britain First, who was released from prison in January for breaching a high court ban by entering a mosque, addressed supporters waving some of the 400 union jack flags made by his mother on Friday night. Earlier, as the marchers moved from Charing Cross station, Golding’s mother Chris had said of the flags: “They really lift the march, they look lovely.”"

Figmentofmyimagination · 02/04/2017 22:49

Angsting about the colour of the passport is putting the cart before the horse, because if the economy goes tits up, getting paid in pounds will mean we can't actually afford to travel anywhere, and having no freedom of movement will mean we can't even go abroad in search of jobs in countries with stronger currencies - doh.

Peregrina · 02/04/2017 22:53

The time might come when what remains of the UK is begging to rejoin a (reformed) EU, in order to take advantage of all those jobs available in Poland. Perhaps not in 10 years, but 20-30?

Figmentofmyimagination · 02/04/2017 23:03

Yes. I think it's called hubris - except that the perpetrators will all be retired or dead.

herethereandeverywhere · 02/04/2017 23:16

Anon123 you have been busy! Welcome to the thread. I have read your posts and have some responses for you.

You said that “the most important thing is regaining our sovereignty, you just cant put a price on that.”
Really?!! ANY price? Economic stability? Peace with close and neighbouring countries? Is nothing too high a price for you?

In response to What laws would you keep/get rid of?

“I don’t know, [well, that’s off to a good start…] but I would like them to be on the table and debated by the UK so I can make an informed choice.” [Err, you don’t get to make the choice, elected MPs do. Just like your elected MEPs did in Europe (sigh)]
Things like free movement seems to be bad. [‘Seems to be’…you might need to be a bit more specific. Further up the thread we debated immigration and concluded that economically we can’t be without it. Someone also posted a link to a recent study showing EU immigrants were net economic contributors, unlike the indigenous populous and non-EU migrants] The working time directive also seems to be a bit stupid. [‘Stupid’ you say? In what way exactly? The concept is intended to prevent people from being dangerously overworked from a personal health and general safety perspective. Certain people can and do sign opt outs in relation to it. I’m unclear what part you think is ‘stupid’.] A lot of the CAP appears to be stupid. [I’m not a CAP expert so you’ll need to guide me here…. ‘stupid’…. What do farmers stand to gain in exchange for all the grants they will be losing?] Don't even mention fisheries. [Ok, I won’t but if I may mention ‘fish’… there are depleting reserves of them in the seas so I’m not sure there’ll be a great resurgence in the fishing industry unless the end game is 'no fish at all'…] I don’t like what the Euro has done to countries like Greece. [Greece generated its own debt, the ECB bailed it out, it now needs paying back, it probably should not have been accepted into the Euro with such an unsophisticated economy but I’m unsure what that has to do with the UK…] I dont want to be exposed to other countries debts. [Instead you could choose to be exposed to the global eceomonic fall out of their debts, ie: that their economy and banks collapse and there are decade long global recessions….by 'choose' I actually meant we will be anyway...] I dont like the EU banning products in the UK. [Oohh, this one sounds interesting! What has the EU banned that you we can now purchase? I’m guessing lead-based paint or fake Viagra… am I right?] I don’t like the EU forcing laws on us. [Which ones in particular? Or is it the list we’ve just been through? Either way nothing was forced on us, see previous references to MEPs, the Shengen area and the Euro.] I could go on the list is pretty long. [Please do! I’m learning a lot! Please continue.]

It might ten years but it will leave the UK a better place for my grandchildren. [I’m not sure in what way it will be better in 10 years time. Economically the UK will be weaker, having just paid for Brexit and having to trade on WTO terms. Your grandchildren will not have any of the free movement benefits to travel, be educated or work in the EU as free, equivalent citizens. We may even have been to war with Spain by that point. Please explain how and why it will be better – is it that you think they will be working happily in the fishing industry and electing MPs to repeal the working time directive so they can do it 24/7?]

frumpet · 03/04/2017 06:28

Rufus you go abroad on holiday ? You must really hate 'your' country Grin

Non of that foreign climes malarky in this household , UK based holidays all the way here , it isn't a holiday without having to wear a kagoul , FACT .

frumpet · 03/04/2017 06:30

or kagoule even Blush

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 03/04/2017 08:07

If we could just tow GB to somewhere warmer!!!

Then i would truly love my country!!!

(Well, there would be a few little tweaks but nothing that couldnt be tossed over the side on the journey)

larrygrylls · 03/04/2017 08:18

Peregrina,

The only reason we would be 'begging' to join a reformed EU is because our exit catalysed them to reform.

The whole thing is a dreadful shame, really. Did not want to stay or leave either. But maybe us leaving can lead to a reformed democratic EU based on Northern Europe, with good trading relationships (but separate currencies in the south and east).

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 03/04/2017 08:23

it isn't a holiday without having to wear a kagoul , FACT .
I saw possibly the most British sight ever last summer as we drove back home from our holiday (Northumberland, if you must know, none of that Foreign for us either). A family were sitting on camping chairs in a lay-by on the A42 eating sandwiches in the rain. Could there be anything more gloriously British? I'm not sure that they were particularly looking as if they loved their country, but those people were true patriots. Fact.

Peregrina · 03/04/2017 08:30

What make was their car, LordRothermere? I think we should be told, whether it was British or not. If British, they had probably broken down and were making the best of it.

Imjustapoorboy · 03/04/2017 08:58

The young will be the key to brexit. Just like the poll tax they have the power. They just don't know it yet. But they will

LaurieMarlow · 03/04/2017 09:07

I have no idea why anyone would think the WTD is holding us back given that literally everyone I know has signed an opt out. Confused

howabout · 03/04/2017 09:10

Laurie the WTD rather neatly illustrates the issue with relying on EU regulations for workers' rights. Fine on paper but full of holes except for anyone who actually wants to do the right thing. Same with "self-employment" and zero hours contracts.

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 03/04/2017 09:49

I'm sure it was a British car, Peregrina - now that you mention it, they did have that demeanour of British grit, of making the best of it, so may well have broken down. I may start a thread in relationships asking whether I should LTB, since DH has a German car, the traitor. Hopefully he will get rid of it at the same time as his humiliating pink passport.

Deadsouls · 03/04/2017 10:01

If anon123's arguments for Brexit are even minimally representative of leave voters views, then I fear we are in trouble.
