Keep telling yourselves that. I guess the blinkers keep that out

Where have the EU been antagonistic about trade deals?

We have had a fantastic deal in the EU with no shortage of concessions:

  • Full membership of the single market
  • A discounted fee through the UK rebate
  • Opted out of the single currency, and any bail-outs associated with that, but London-based banks still able to handle Euro clearing (for now)
  • Opted out of Schengen, so have own border control
  • The single-market base for many multinational companies who use one country to access the whole EU - cars, banks, airlines, broadcasters etc
  • Very influential in shaping EU rules

Now we are saying that we want to keep all that we liked about membership, but opt-out of the bits we don't like and have that all for free. Honestly????

scary: Juncker has an autocratic personality, no argument from me there! But so do many of our own politicians. Brexit will not free us from autocratic personalities.
It is hugely disingenous to imply that the commission's powers as autocratic, or by association describe the EU as autocratic.
Ironically, a trade deal would be much more simple if the EU was more autocratic.

squishysquirmy · 30/03/2017 12:18

And "herding cats" does not really go with "autocratic", so you're undermining yourself there.

Olympiathequeen · 30/03/2017 12:41

Squishy. But the eu is not just about trade. It's called a union for a reason. It's a politically alliance where some are more powerful than others.

Also no idea which part of the world is laughing at us? Maybe think were wrong but not laughing.

Olympiathequeen · 30/03/2017 12:43

Roy. Who said we will have it all for free? No one is saying it and to the best of my knowledge even the campaigners didn't say it. It will cost and cost a lot, but all the rest can just go.

Imjustapoorboy · 30/03/2017 12:49

I do like the idea of being a hardcore remainer - will I get a badge? Does it mean now we have served article 50 I will have to create my own island out of plastic bottles and tie it the the French coast?

Afraid not. Here in Blighty for the foreseeable continuing to see the emperor has no clothes (I do have a plan B and C tho)

squishysquirmy · 30/03/2017 13:03

When I said "a trade deal", I meant the one we want to negotiate with the rest of the EU, Olympia. I know that the EU is about more than trade, but to some extent believe that shared standards and regulations make free trade agreements easier, as it helps to prevent one country undercutting the price of another.

Great quote on the Today Programme

Chris Patton 'Some of the right wing in the conservative party have lost the plot' ....... 'Brussels has taken back control'

Well all looking good then.

howabout · 30/03/2017 13:34

Is that Chris Last Governor of HK Patten?

howabout · 30/03/2017 13:37

Och no poorboy. Just paint yourself a wee banner and camp out at Holyrood or Westminster with an EU brolly.

howabout · 30/03/2017 13:39

German businessman on the lunchtime news. Wants to know why he can't just trade with the UK like he does with S Korea. Me too. Smile

I think the EU started as a good idea but like so many good ideas (a free trading area) it just grew like Topsy not quite sure who topsy is and now it's like a runaway train. We're not the only ones not happy but the first to jump ship

Loving all my mixed metaphors and children's references!

howabout · 30/03/2017 16:19

Topsy. From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishTop‧sy /ˈtɒpsi $ ˈtɑːp-/ a small African-American girl character in the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin(1851–52) by Harriet Beecher stowe. When she is asked whether she knows who made her (that is, whether she has heard of God), she replies 'I expect I grow'd' (=grew).

I love learning new things from MN. Had to check because Topsy & Tim is the only one I know and that didn't seem likely.

Olympiathequeen · 30/03/2017 18:31

Grin Definitely learning new stuff .
