Xenophobia: Brexit official discourse

Hearing one minister after another at the Tory conference today has made me feel ill: So foreign doctors are welcome UNTIL more British doctors have been trained in a hurry, foreigners will be treated as second class citizens when applying for a job, and EU nationals are one of the "main cards" in Brexit negotiations. I cannot imagine any other country in the world where the official discourse of the governing party would include these statements without it being condemned as xenophobic. Shame on them.

Wendy.

It was advisory, and the majority so small that its rather inquitous to claim a mandate for any of the policies being proposed.

See when you argue for democracy for a government that has moved from the mandate it was elected on, that is going to use rules to by pass parliament, you show your utter lack of your understanding of it.

The leavers want all different things for different reasons and as said the majority was so small it makes the result of the ref virtually impossible to use as a justification for majority rule.

"How is it possible that a country that bases large parts of its national pride on winning against fascism is now going down this route?"

I don't think it's about fascism (or is it?) it's more about an inherent claim to superiority based on ones nationality; it's nationalism rather than fascism. If you think back in history, us English haven't treated the rest of the world as equals have we? I am watching Indian Summer right now and am Shock at the way the English treated people on the sub continent. The days of the empire are not long over.

It's what my mum wants. She voted out because she want all the foreigners to go home and no more terrorists to come here.

My mum did exactly the same. Cause all muslims are rapists and they're gone behead us all!! Been NC with her since June due to an argument over the Brexit result.

Yes yes smallfox, whatever. Your sneery attitude is why remainders are alone in these echo chamber thresds as no leavers can be bothered with it.
Guess what? The conservatives will get in again, and again because people DO want the changes that are happening. That's democracy. Got to love it! Grin

I will continue to sneer and be disgusted by racism, if that's ok with you Wendy. Even if it isn't.

"The conservatives will get in again, and again because people DO want the changes that are happening. That's democracy. Got to love it!"

Yes they probably will. Sad
I don't believe small's comment was sneery at all but the it's democracy innit arguments by some Brexit supporters is so shallow, the referendum was advisory that's a fact not rudeness. It's been said so many times but for some Brexit supporters' notion of democracy seems begin and end with the Eu referendum Hmm.

I'll sneer at you as much as I like wendy, your comments lack any real understanding.

Leavers tend to come here, spout spurious and ill researched opinions and then claim that they are being bullied or sneered at.

Well guess what if you're going to come up with shoddy reasoning, you're fair game.

Hey IamWendy, take a look at this insightful article from the New York Times looking at the recent spate of referenda and explaining why referenda are not tools of democracy -

www.google.co.uk/amp/mobile.nytimes.com/2016/10/05/world/americas/colombia-brexit-referendum-farc-cameron-santos.amp.html?client=safari

The NYT are members of the Liberal Elite, however, (or should I say the Metropolitan Liberal Elite - aka Capitalist Running Dogs for 21st C England), so the focus groups are probably telling May's advisors that this kind of Liberal Elite Patronising view can be safely ignored.

The stuff coming out of the Conservative party conference is rabid, racist and frightening. This wasn't mandated by a very small majority brexit vote.

"But later in the day she [TM] changed tack – saying the new policy did not mean foreign doctors would be asked to go home once enough British ones had been trained. The Prime Minister said decisions about recruitment would be left to local hospitals.Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt announced yesterday that he wanted to boost the total of British-born doctors by increasing the number of medical students trained each year from 6,000 to 7,500, which will cost around £100million."

Does this mean prospective students have to show a birth certificate when applying fro med school? How many other professions might follow suit? What about children who were not British born but naturalised at some point? Unbelievably pathetic

Dorothy

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

wendy your very narrow and limited definition of democracy is very dangerous and easily manipulated, don't you see that? Look at the NYT article.

As a side note: protectionism doesn't work and is completely contradictory to the idea of being an internationalist trading country. All the rhetoric from the Conservatives now indicates that they don't understand this basic dichotomy and are merely pursuing a chaotic, divisive and xenophobic future. Meanwhile there is no one really holding them to account. As UK born, this dialogue frightens and alienates me. This does not feel like my home anymore - and I'm from here

Amber Rudd: "new £ 140 mil controlling fund to ease the pressure on public services in areas of high migration."

How we will get immigration under control: long-term: by reducing the numbers that come from Europe; in the mid-term: by reforming the student and work route eventually; and in the short term: taking action to help communities affected by high levels of immigration and stopping people to come here that threaten our security.

Conservative have become UKIP.

Exactly who, where is Labour and why aren't they speaking out on this? I predict that when parliament resumes Labour will politely point out why grammar schools are not nice and little else. I hope I'm wrong and I'm writing to my mp today...

I have only two words describing the conservative party today: pathetic and dangerous

" long-term: by reducing the numbers that come from Europe"
Look closer what's being said here. It's fucking rhetoric isn't it. They will not be able to control / curb the numbers coming from Europe anytime soon, so it's been postponed to the 'long-term', eh? Interesting use of the word numbers too, let's not call migrants people but let's dehumanise them and make it sound that there are so many flooding in.

We also might look at Germany but the xenophobic AFD is winning elections everywhere.
