Xenophobia: Brexit official discourse

Hearing one minister after another at the Tory conference today has made me feel ill: So foreign doctors are welcome UNTIL more British doctors have been trained in a hurry, foreigners will be treated as second class citizens when applying for a job, and EU nationals are one of the "main cards" in Brexit negotiations. I cannot imagine any other country in the world where the official discourse of the governing party would include these statements without it being condemned as xenophobic. Shame on them.

You will of course seen the nice tidbit of about how Amber Rudd is planning to name and shame companies that don't employ British workers, along with a raft of other delightful measures...

"Not training more doctors -(hurrah) but training more doctors so we don't have so many foreigners."

i agree. I am disgusted and have fallen out of love with this country. Dh is German, let's see how thing progress. Hilariously they are blaming all the bloody failings of consecutive governments on EU citizens living in the UK, ridiculous and pathetic. No wonder people from many EU countries are more educated and more successful than many English people / Brits.
Teresa may probably worships Thatcher or something.

Most people would bring back hanging if given the vote, maybe that's the next bow to "democracy"? It doesn't seem unreasonable now...

I have fallen out of love with UK too, very painful. It's great to feel supported by talking to people in same situation! Flowers

Isn't it funny how some leave voters wanted to leave the EU because they didn't want to be of some thing where far right governments governments looked set to be elected.

I wonder if this is what Germany felt like in the 1930s. Apologies if that sounds inappropriate. It's just that since DC introduced the possibility of Brexit the atmosphere in this country has changed.... it's all about hating and envying EU citizens who live here in order to promote a picture of national unity.

List foreign workers? So that they can be issued with a yellow star?

I have been thinking of many similarities with the 30s, and it's chilling...

Don't like the xenophobic way this has been phrased but it is absolutely right that we should train more of our own young people to be doctors instead of depleting other countries of their talent.

I absolutely disagree with you Figment, there is no way this particular strategy is encouraging mediocrity. The number of medical school places has been over-restricted by the government for years while large numbers of bright and talented 18-year-olds who would love to study medicine cannot get university places

It's utterly terrifying. I knew Brexit would be bad, but this unfettered hate and bile from the Tories is something else - the EDL may as well disband as it looks like their services will no longer be required.

Firms Must List Foreign Workers.

Many of those will have Tory voting owners, who are quite happy to undercut UK wages when it suits them, so good luck with that. The more the Tories drop each other in the shit, the better.

This is too much. Way, way too far beyond the mere destruction of the economy. How do we stop it?

Training more doctors = fantastic. Doing it in order to shame and expel foreign doctors = fascistic

Pisc of course the UK should train their own as long as their own are willing to work under the terrible conditions of the NHS.

Anecdotal, i know, but many of my friends are doctors either general practice or hospital. One of my df works 15 hour days at her surgery, getting paid for 7.5. She is expected to do additional shifts with no extra pay or time in lieu offered. She is basically working for free after years of studying and training to be a GP. It's grim. She is working so hard and feels a real commitment to her patients. But in the eyes of the media and the public she is just one of those 2nd class EU doctors. Angry

That times headline is worrying.

I think the comparisons between the 1930's and now are not outlandish at all. The xenophobia unleased at the Tory conference is unbelievable.

The repeated phrase "overwhelming majority" and "people have spoken" is frightening because nearly half the vote went in the other direction and no attention is being paid to the fact that this hard stance has no real mandate.

Corbyn being a fucking car crash has allowed this too. We NEED political debate.

The government are opening them selves up to legal challenges with this. If that is the case, then the next question it begs is what will the courts do - and will they be free to do it?

How could we have gone and sleepwalked into a rerun of the 1930s? No doubt people will be saying we are being unduly pessimistic, but that was said then too, until it was too late.

No more 'Cool Britania', it's back to the days of over inflated self importance and implicit and explicit racism à la British Empire. [green]
