Are you still sane?

Will this insanity ever end?

Just wanted to pop in and mention that Spain et al should only be worried about Scotland staying in the EU if those countries are looking to leave the EU, no? If Scotland go for independence first, and get it, then ok, perhaps some concern, but if they're doing it so they can stay in the EU then Scotland is demonstrating not that it's better to be a small country on their own, but rather a small country that is part of a bigger club.

If Spain wants to leave the EU and then Catalonia pipes up to stay, then, ok, we've set precedence...

MrsLupo · 30/06/2016 15:57

I've just come in from the outside world expecting that I would have missed Angela Eagle's 3pm press conference. Now the interweb is telling me "Eagle may delay leader bid 'to give Corbyn time to quit'". So...what's happening, people? Because I had a clear sense in my mind that he's not planning to quit. Has she wimped out? Has the narrative changed? I only went out for school run, ffs. Confused

DoinItFine · 30/06/2016 16:00

She wimped out hours ago.

ObiWanCannelloni · 30/06/2016 16:01

MrsLupo Grin I'm in danger of losing plot myself but I think the party members ire (strong letter from her own constituency plus local meetings last night) means that they don't want to mount leadership challenge which JC will win if on the ballot paper.
So they're still trying to persuade him to stand down so challengers can stand against each other, not against him.
Diane Abbott said to be physically blocking door to stop MPs getting in to him...

ObiWanCannelloni · 30/06/2016 16:03

I'd add that I think her threat of 3pm press conference was to force his hand to stand down but when it came to it in that game of chicken, she was the one who backed down

howabout · 30/06/2016 16:05

Paper I don't think so. Why would Spain want to risk opening the door to having Catalonia as well as Spain as full members of the EU? That was why the EU were so dismissive of the Scottish idea to retain EU membership in indyref1.

A further complication is that I am deeply sceptical that a majority of Scots would vote to adopt the Euro in favour of the £ when they think about it.

Peregrina · 30/06/2016 16:05

Paperkins I suspect that the Catalans wouldn't look beyond Scotland's Independence and not get to the EU issue. I think their attitude would be, if they can have independence, why can't we?

'Speechless with anger' spits another new May backer who was texted by Gove spad at 9.30 last night to make sure they were at Boris launch

Fury among some Boris backers. 'I'd rather vote for Pol Pot than Gove' says one new May supporter. 'Treachery' says another.

"Eagle may delay leader bid 'to give Corbyn time to quit'".

My feeling on that was, Eagle may delay because her constituency party is threatening to deselect her. Maybe I'm just too cynical.

DoinItFine · 30/06/2016 16:07

Exactly, Paperkins.

Spain will make a bit of noise, but I think they can be talked down as long as it's a stay in situation.

Depending on lots of other variables. But Juncker won't close the door on this too quickly. It's very useful to the EU negotiating position.

MrsLupo · 30/06/2016 16:07

Oh ffs. You would think before they mobilised their coup they would have checked there was some fuel in the tanks...

Anyway, I'll be quiet because Mark Carney's talking and I know some of you will be trying to enjoy that. Wink

TanTanNubuck · 30/06/2016 16:08

'I'd rather vote for Pol Pot than Gove'

First time I've ever agreed with the words of a Tory.

UnGoogleable · 30/06/2016 16:10

Blimey I go out for the morning, and now this! Can't keep up!

I agree, Labour have played this appallingly - the biggest shitshow in history is being played out by the Tory party, and yet they still manage to steal the headlines with their own self-made clusterfuck.

peachpudding · 30/06/2016 16:10

I think the ferocious way the Tories are weeding out the crap has cowed Labour into leaveing JC to be hung drawn and quartered. Eagle hasn't the stomach to face a powerful united Conservative Party. Their only hope is to hide until Corbyn is pushing up daisies and then seeing what is left of the debris in the next decade.

DoinItFine · 30/06/2016 16:10

If they stick to the euro threat, I don't think NS would bring that deal back for Indyref2.

RedToothBrush · 30/06/2016 16:11

I don't want to be prime minister.

Q: Are you protesting too much?

A: If anyone wants me to sign a parchment in my own blood saying I don't want to be prime minister I'm quite happy to do that.

OP posts:
DoinItFine · 30/06/2016 16:15

Where can we get a parchment that is 2 miles x 4 miles?

MrsLupo · 30/06/2016 16:15

Labour have played this appallingly - the biggest shitshow in history is being played out by the Tory party, and yet they still manage to steal the headlines with their own self-made clusterfuck.

Beautifully put, though it gives me no pleasure to say it.

UnGoogleable · 30/06/2016 16:18

Thanks MrsLupo Clusterfuck is my word of the day Grin

peachpudding · 30/06/2016 16:18

Would Scots really want the Euro, border controls to get into England, the cost of entry to the EU club which is currently paid for by England, no rebate, being ruled by Junker, bailing out Greece and all the rest. Could NS destroy scotland, maybe just maybe.

officerhinrika · 30/06/2016 16:22

See what you all mean about Mark Carneys delivery, good stuff.

DoinItFine · 30/06/2016 16:23

Weekly rather than monthly auctions to pump new liquidity into financial system.

From Mark Carney

howabout - can you shed light on these auctions and how they work?

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/06/2016 16:23

'If anyone wants me to sign a parchment in my own blood saying I don't want to be prime minister I'm quite happy to do that.'

What a gimp. Doesn't show much forethought. All these quotes will be played constantly. Not to mention the details of his life with the fragrant Sarah Vine.

Mark Carney says he has a plan. That's a nice change!
Unfortunately, he admits his plan is not the one that matters the most.
