I voted remain. I'm ashamed of brin British right now.

This is so depressing. What a bloody nightmare.

soimpressed · 25/06/2016 23:04

I've experienced this today. A man in my local McDonalds being openly and very loudly racist. There were lots of children around including my DS and when I asked him to to keep his racist views to himself for the sake of the children he gave me a load of abuse. I have lived here for 11 years and never experienced anything like that.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 25/06/2016 23:05

Just awful. I'm horrified. Actually can't find the words Sad

Wolpertinger · 25/06/2016 23:07

My DM has been deeply upset by all the people saying it'll be so much better out of the EU and it was much better in the 60s and 70s.

Her memory of those times in signs in the windows saying 'No blacks, no Irish'.

Seems like we haven't changed much at all and now we know why some people thought it was better then Sad

IndridCold · 25/06/2016 23:07

I don't think it is any secret that there are some extreme racists in Britain, and always have been.

To try and claim that this has been caused by the vote to leave the EU is to stoop to a level not that much higher than the racists you say you are condemning.

JeanGenie23 · 25/06/2016 23:09

I do sympathise for the leavers who had their own reasons, because they will be tarred with the same brush. This vote has brought out the very worst in people. It's not the society I wanted my child to experience

BlueberrySky · 25/06/2016 23:10

Absolutely sickening.

HopeClearwater · 25/06/2016 23:11

To try and claim that this has been caused by the vote to leave the EU is to stoop to a level not that much higher than the racists you say you are condemning.

So let me guess - you're White British and you voted Out...

Cleo1303 · 25/06/2016 23:12

It's absolutely disgraceful that these incidents have happened but, yes, this resentment has been bubbling under for years. For example, the people of Boston in Lincolnshire have repeatedly said that their town has been changed beyond all recognition by large numbers of immigrants who don't even speak English and don't integrate, preferring to create their own separate communities. Every time someone from Boston has raised this on QT most of the panel have been condescending and rude. I'm not surprised Boston had almost the highest turnout in the UK and voted overwhelmingly for Leave.

dailymaillazyjournos · 25/06/2016 23:12

It hasn't been caused by the leave vote *Indrid" but it's made it more acceptable for the far right to step forward and vent their hatred. We have gone back years to a more nationalist time. When I was a kid it was the norm for people to verbalise their opinions of blacks, Irish, Jews and other 'forriners'.

Liiinoo · 25/06/2016 23:13

Are you suggesting that every remain voter is a politically correct, liberal and tolerant individual?
In my experience some people who voted Remain are very rich, privileged, right wing gits whose sole motivation was protecting their wealth/pension. They had very little interest in the 'underclasses' of whatever ethnicity.

Let's not assume that all racists are Leavers or even that all Leavers are racist.

JeanGenie23 · 25/06/2016 23:13

Indrid- I don't think anyone on the thread has said this vote has caused racists. If you have misinterpreted anything I posted, I certainly didn't mean that. I do think it's given already racist people the platform to come out and spred their shit around. Even people who didn't necessarily say anything out loud before now seem more vocal. One acquaintance of mine on Facebook was blocked after a rather disgusting rant, something which prior to yesterday I didn't know they were capable of, but obviously they were!

JeanGenie23 · 25/06/2016 23:17

Liiinoo- of course you are right. I voted remain but I am not at all rich, powerful, or right wing.

Indrid Noone is claiming any such thing - Racism in Britain has been steadily getting worse over the past decade and people have been choosing to ignore it or belittle it and not address it. I can assure you it is real alive and kicking

cheeseandcrackers77 · 25/06/2016 23:20

17 million people are not racist thugs so let just stop with all this crap being thrown at leavers and being told we caused this.

These idiots didn't just decide yesterday to be racists they will have had these opinions for a long time. I do not in any way agree with their actions and they should be locked up and the key thrown away for their disgusting attitude and actions.

I voted leave and immigration didn't come into my decision. I am astounded though by the sheer hysteria being displayed and utter intolerance many remain voters have for democracy.

Of course what would I a leave voter know after all if you believe the 100s of threads on here I am just an uneducated, racists thug.

JeanGenie23 · 25/06/2016 23:20

Needascarf that's true I must admit I hadn't concerned that Blush I remember watching the Sheila Hancock clip of her on the channel 4 show last Wednesday eve, she mentioned how a vote to leave could lead to extremity. Alas queen Sheila is right!

AdoraBell · 25/06/2016 23:21

It's been under the surface. We moved back from overseas last year. Both white British, blue eyed children with English names, and my DDS were told "go back to your filthy country" about 4 months ago.

right now I hate the country of my birth, we're my family have been for multiple generations. If we hadn't sold the house in Latin America I would leave.

JeanGenie23 · 25/06/2016 23:23

cheeseandcrackers whilst some threads have gone that way on here (and as a remain voter I have been subject to name calling myself from some leavers) this one wasn't going to. Surely we can all be on the same page here? No one had suggested that 17m leave voters were racist. Don't let yourself get so offended without reason

AdultingIsNotWhatIExpected · 25/06/2016 23:23

It's not just here, it's simmering else where too.. a lot of places it's also simmering in are the very places half my facebook are considering "escaping this toxic society" to Sad

orangebird69 · 25/06/2016 23:24

I've attached a screenshot of some of it. I voted leave and I'm disgusted too..

This is what the leave vote has validated
SocksRock · 25/06/2016 23:25

I think the number of people who hold racist views like this are a small proportion of the leave voters. I in no way think that everyone who voted leave is capable of behaviour like this. What I do think is that the leave vote has made people think that they aren't in a minority and can behave like this with impunity, which is so sad.

smellylittleorange · 25/06/2016 23:25

Cheeseand crackers the OP has not said in this post that Leave voters are all racist ! But these are tales of people experiencing racism which is a real part of our society today !
