PETITION FOR A SECOND REFERENDUM - 1 million + signatures already

GertrudeBelle · 25/06/2016 11:10

A parliamentary petition has been created calling for a second referendum. As I type, it already has 1,061,466 signatures and the number is growing rapidly so it will have to be taken seriously.

I would urge everyone who is concerned about the consequences of yesterday's result to sign it. It only takes a minute. Get your friends and family to sign too.

Link here:

There's also a map showing the location of the signatories. There are some key Remain territories which don't seem to have picked this up - particularly Scotland and Northern Ireland. Please spread the word. Map here:

'considering 16million remain votes, even 3million valid votes is insignificant - it shows as I have said above, that over 80% of the remain voters accept the decision as the result of our democratic process'

  • it shows nothing of the sort. All it shows is that 3 million people chose to express their concern specifically by signing this petition. Some of them may not even be Remain voters. The remainder of remain voters may or may not accept the outcome or may choose to protest another way.

'those in the remain camp should wake up to the fact that the UK has burned its bridges now - the EU is very unlikely to allow the UK to stay'
-it is not up to them. We are an EU member state and remain such unless/until we notify them of our departure.

SeaEagleFeather · 26/06/2016 18:00

I don't think they are the best way for our democratic system to work

I had a dream that democracy would be run with attempts to be honest.

that battered dream was broken into tiny pieces by the outright lies of Farage and the Leave campaign. The Remain campaign was poor and also not free of lies, but the Farage stuff were outright and outrageous fabrications. It isn't a true victory when it's based on such extensive deceit, even though the UK will have to go forward with Brexit now.

I just do not see how a campaign that was won by a very narrow margin through lies can be called a democracy.

Havent you just described every general election?

Tony Blair was education education education....but only for the rich rich rich as the first thing he did was introduce tuition fees.

DC's unmandated privatisation of the NHS. He managed to do that on a hung parliament and a coalition government with no clear majority.

Lottielo · 26/06/2016 18:05

Probably been said upthread, but I read that only 350,000 of those who have signed it live in the UK.

Livingtothefull · 26/06/2016 18:10

Where did you read that Lottielo? Source please.

Parker231 · 26/06/2016 18:11

This idea is ridiculous - keep voting, best of three or best of five. That isn't how democracy works. Everyone is entitled to vote and then we live with the result.

HereSheComestoSavetheDay · 26/06/2016 18:26

So we live with any cost, at any price? The stakes cannot get high enough. It's not worth another vote, no matter what happens or what the consequences are?

So if you accidentally voted for Hitler, you could just suck it up and live with it?

ManonLescaut · 26/06/2016 18:31

Seriously?

How extraordinary.

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 18:51

So if you accidentally voted for Hitler, you could just suck it up and live with it?

Accidentally voted?

Everyone who voted leave or remain made a fucking choice. Now live with it.

HereSheComestoSavetheDay · 26/06/2016 18:57

Did they make a choice based on the facts or on lies?

roundtoit · 26/06/2016 19:04

should be best of three , then maybe paper rock scissors and finally we go to penalty shoot out.

if we dont get the result you want , what do we do then ?

17 million people voted out . Its too late now to demand a new vote .

HereSheComestoSavetheDay · 26/06/2016 19:08

Why is it?

NewLife4Me · 26/06/2016 19:09

People did vote for Hitler for the best reasons, they too were told lies.
They even let their dc go off to camp to be indoctrinated into Hitler Youth.
They weren't horrible people they were sold a lie.
They cheered him in the streets, they were promised the earth.
I don't think anyone knew what was going to happen.
So yes, they sucked it up, what alternative did they have unless they wanted to be killed.
At least we aren't facing death......... yet.

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 19:10

Did they make a choice based on the facts or on lies?

They could carry out their own research.

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 19:11

Jesus Christ we havent just voted in the Nazi party.

You are all pissing yourself about our rights being trampled on.

We have one of the best minimum wages in the world. 10 EU countries dont have a minimum wage.

roundtoit · 26/06/2016 19:15

i made my own mind up and did my own research, i took nearly everything the two sides said with a pinch of salt, did all of you asking for a 2nd vote believe the politicians . Surely you should know by now that politicians will say whatever you want to hear to get your vote. Both sides were guilty of that .

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 19:15

Or if you are gay move to Slovenia where two thirds of the people voted to overturn a law allowing gay marriage.

And you're sitting here thinking the EU is some kind of left wing utopia?!

Tanith · 26/06/2016 19:18

Lottielo, I think someone said their servers were outside the Uk.

Also, expats voted in the referendum.

HereSheComestoSavetheDay · 26/06/2016 19:24

Are you seriously that fatalistic?

Livingtothefull · 26/06/2016 19:26

The petition is edging towards 3.4 million now….accept that some of these may well still be fraudulent yes it could could apply to the majority but I doubt it. All the talk about the petition being discredited; you would think that some people didn't want too many to sign.

Parker231 · 26/06/2016 19:34

Apparently no decision has been made yet as to whether this will be debated but has no chance of being enacted, because it is asking for retrospective legislation.

JustAOneOffToday · 26/06/2016 19:38

https://www.change.org/p/govuk-if-england-lose-to-iceland-replay-the-match-until-we-get-the-result-we-desire

This made me think the petition is totally worthless.

Livingtothefull · 26/06/2016 19:41

This isn't a football match, this is all our futures.

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 19:41

The petition is totally worthless.
You can't apply laws retrospectively.

HereSheComestoSavetheDay · 26/06/2016 19:45

It's not illegal to have another vote.
