PETITION FOR A SECOND REFERENDUM - 1 million + signatures already

GertrudeBelle · 25/06/2016 11:10

A parliamentary petition has been created calling for a second referendum. As I type, it already has 1,061,466 signatures and the number is growing rapidly so it will have to be taken seriously.

I would urge everyone who is concerned about the consequences of yesterday's result to sign it. It only takes a minute. Get your friends and family to sign too.

There's also a map showing the location of the signatories. There are some key Remain territories which don't seem to have picked this up - particularly Scotland and Northern Ireland. Please spread the word. Map here:

Why would we want another referendum
Most people in this country think we have made the right decision!

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 19:55

Re you going to pay for the second vote? And what if it is leave again with a narrow majority?

What do you all think it is going to achieve?

JustAOneOffToday · 26/06/2016 20:00

Yea it might not be a football match bit the principle is the same.

We voted, those who lost want a repeat so they can get their desired results. Either you vote or you don't. Otherwise you can keep changing. Goalposts until your team wins. A really dangerous game to play.

Spinflight · 26/06/2016 20:02

How many people living in the Vatican city have signed this petition again?

ample · 26/06/2016 20:02

Loathe or love it, we have a result.
A second referendum may set a precedent for all future referendums, and elections.
It won't? Because this one was exceptional you say? Oh okay, just a redo for this one then Hmm

I cringed when I saw the post tag labelled 'regrexit'
Good grief.

Imbroglio · 26/06/2016 20:03

Governments move the goalposts all the time. I don't sense much of an appetite for pushing the button.

I bet there is a hell of a lot being thrashed out this weekend, here and in Europe. I wouldn't rule anything out just yet.

Savemefromwine · 26/06/2016 20:05

Do grow up dear the people have voted. That's democracy

Yes, notably no appetite ...

Savemefromwine · 26/06/2016 20:07

And post on toddler taming if you stamping your feet because you didn't get your own way.

Bloody yawn.

SeaEagleFeather · 26/06/2016 20:08

goodness saveme and they call the Remainers patronizing.

HereSheComestoSavetheDay · 26/06/2016 20:30

No, people, me included, think we should vote again to make sure the people who have now changed their mind have the opportunity to do so.

What are you so frightened of, if you honestly believe that the majority agrees?

And yes, I would happily pay for another referendum.

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 20:32

No, people, me included, think we should vote again to make sure the people who have now changed their mind have the opportunity to do so.

It doesnt work like that.

After 5 years of DC and his coalition, they won an easy majority the next election.

Why are you all so sure remain would win again?

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 20:38
  • not again. Would win that should say.
Lottielo · 26/06/2016 20:38

If you scroll down to the bottom of the petition and click on 'get petition data' you will see how many people are voting from overseas. Also, many of those signing, even if they are in the UK, won't necessarily have been eligible to vote because they are not British, but can sign this petition because they live in the UK.

There is nothing about age either. My under 18 DDs wanted to sign it.

Lottielo · 26/06/2016 20:41

The Guardian says there are a lot of fraudulent signatures, including 39,000 from Vatican City which only has a population of 800!

Lottielo · 26/06/2016 20:45

Given the way the leave campaign have backtracked on their claims about the money saved being spent on the NHS and as people realise that the amount of immigration is unlikely to change, I think a new referendum would stand a good chance of succeeding for remain. I think there would be much more support from young voters a second time round.

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 20:51

Given the way the coalition govt back tracked about everything: they won an easy majority 5 years later.

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 20:53

LOL over 200,000 for this one

Lottielo · 26/06/2016 20:57

But it has become clear that not only will their promises never be delivered, they haven't got an exit plan or a strategy of any sort. It's almost as though the leave campaign never believed they'd win and many of those voting leave didn't think they'd win either. I'm convinced a large number of leave voters were just protesting and making their voice heard, rather than having any idea of the consequences of a leave vote or indeed any real desire to leave at all.

I wasnt. I wanted out.

Lottielo · 26/06/2016 21:03

Are you angry that they've backtracked on their promises NowWhat or did you not really believe them in the first place (I'm sure a lot of leave supporters didn't ever believe the 350m on the NHS figure)?

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 21:07

I didnt vote out for anything that was promised.

I voted out as the EU is basically a central bank. In the last few years it has been going from crisis to crisis because of a system that doesn't work...a system driven by capitalist, power hungry, partly unable, partly blind people.

Want to see how the EU handles a genuine crisis: ask Greece.

NowWhat1983 · 26/06/2016 21:16

That is the problem Lottielo you are assuming people will vote remain a second time because you also assume they voted leave based on those promises.
But I didnt vote because of them. I had my own reasons. Therein lies the problem. You are assuming a hell of a lot.

Lottielo · 26/06/2016 21:27

I think a lot of people voted leave because of how Greece had been treated.

Whatever the result of this referendum, I had hoped that there would be a large majority one way or the other. But I feel really uncomfortable knowing that 48% of the population want to stay.

The online petition was put up before the referendum by a leave supporter. I wonder whether another petition will be posted now that this has come to light?
