Why are all the twats voting leave?

Me being one of them probably Blush

I can't find the list I saw earlier, but it's been playing on my mind all day.

It was a list of remain supporters - there was the Bank of England, the IMF, 99% of economists and big businesses, all the non racist newspapers, Steven Hawking, all unions, most councils, Obama etc etc

And a list of brexit supporters. Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, the leader of ISIS, Vicky Pattison out of Geordie Shore Hmm

I'm sure I want to leave. I've started, read and engaged in very interesting debates on MN and elsewhere that have led me to this decision. I'm not saying it's clear cut, but I certainly don't think it's an obviously foolish vote to make. So why are the majority of influential and intelligent people voting remain, and the twats of the world voting leave?

Maybe it's just pre match nerves. But I can't help but thinking if all these geniuses reckon remain is the way to go, I've probably got it wrong.

Thoughts?

I lived in a high immigration area. Difficult to argue for negative effect of immigration on healthcare, taking into account the number of immigrants working in healthcare.

Schools were slow to catch up with increases in population, but that was as much a problem of years of lack of investment in infrastructure and the effect of austerity policies as anything else.

Young, working immigrant tax payers are net contributors and we have an aging population.

I now live in an area with low immigration and an elderly population (south coast). It's very pro UKIP even though you can go for days without seeing anybody not clearly born in the UK (unless you are in a hospital).

Until their values and opinions are acknowledged and respected, rather than ignored and despised, our present discord will persist.

Absolutely Vrijeme, even on MN this has played out.

The 'stupid' and 'wilfully ignorant' swathes of people with equal voting power (although unequal in every other way), have been patronised, shouted down, 'intellectually' belittled and given a xenophobe/racist label.

Question - for people struggling in high immigration areas, why are more funds not directed that way to alleviate the burden?

This has happened in London - which has higher investment in state schools via pupil premium and I believe additional funds. London state schools outperform the rest of the UK and children from poor and immigrant backgrounds achieve better results than their peers outside London. It's called the London Effect and has been well documented.

Yes I agree that areas of high immigration should have more investment especially as they are often (not always - I live in one of the UK's richest boroughs with a very high level of diversity) poorer and underprivileged.

Really sick of the lack of depth of some people.
Really, do you believe that in order to want to leave the eu you have to be intellectually challenged?
I actually see it as quite the opposite, because if you cant see that those who want to stay in government, generally only want it because they have financial interests in staying in and nothing more, then you must be missing something.

littlemiss great article. We need to get the overall debate back on track.

On both sides, there has been real unpleasantness.

I've come to the conclusion that most of the British public should be given a basic intelligence test before they're allowed near a ballot box.

I must admit my vote is very much based on who is supporting the leave campaign. I'm not proud of that but it's be so full of prpogander on both sides that it's the only thing I can find to help me make up my stupid mind Hmm

And what are the noble reasons behind Gove, Farage and Johnson's desire to Leave?

I'm an 'in' but, think calling brexiters twats, will only sway swing voters to the out camp. Along with the recent remain endorsements, from celebrity ex footballers & ex prominent politicians with other things on their hands, I think the last week of campaigning has seen some massive own goals, from my team

I'm staggered that our former Secretary of State for education seems to wilfully ignore what experts say. His comparison of economic experts to the Nazis was extraordinary.

petit it's that kind of rhetoric that does so much harm.

Guess what? There is an abundance of quiet and thoughtful Leave voters.

you sound so desperately immature to miss the much bigger debate that is needed. Please look at the wonderful article in today's Guardian on this.

Whereas everyone voting remain us all sweetness and light.

There is 'good' and 'bad' in both. Only I'might not so blinkered and entrenched in my own view to see it.

How about you read the link I posted.

If some don't start to change the way they see groups within society then the divides that there are are going to keep growing.

Experts, quite regularly get it wrong, nobody knows the outcome if we leave. They can only predict.
I actually think the remain campaign, have conducted themselves in such a way they have driven a huge tract of people into voting leave as they wont be lied and dictated to.
And as for the ridiculous scaremongering, it has been laughable.
We wont stop buying german cars, they wont stop selling them to us etc, etc. In is in both partires interests to do this.

Plus Cameron has never answered the most important question, if we stay, when is enough? At what point is our country full?

I don't know.

I do know that when anyone posts a 'I just voted to remain because I beleive in the EU and we are better in that out etc' on facebook, they get answered with a few mildly humorous and 'good on you' responses and a minority of 'Wanker' and 'bollocks responses who are I assume Brexiteers. They do little for their cause.

Of course all Remainers on this thread alone and many others are behaving honourably towards those that may vote differently to them. Not really helping their cause are they?

No Rooners What does wilful harm is the downright nasty discourse of the Leave Campaign and the hate, suspicion and fear it is trying to engender.
Many Eastern Europeans living and working in this country are now starting to report that are being made to feel increasingly unwelcome. Is that OK with you??
The poster by Farage, the Comments about Nazism by Gove, and some of the things I have seen on Social media about Jo Cox since her death is utterly vile, and something that no decent human being would want to be a part of.

it's not like either side has anything to crow about here

yes the pro-EU side has ignored and belittled the concerns of the less affluent sections of society affected by high immigration

but the anti-EU side has exploited their concerns for a political goal that will actually do nothing to help them

so one side is being patronising, the other side dishonest
