How old was your dad when he died?

I posted earlier but didn’t get any responses, my wonderful dad is 81 and I’m starting to think and wrap my head around the fact he’s not got very long left given he has heart disease and seems to be declining.

My colleague said she thought this wasn’t that old, whereas I thought anything above 80 was.

How old was your DF when he died?

Ninety four. Fit and independent before simply dying of old age. Miss him so much.

Exactly the same as my darling dad. Because age hadn’t withered him in the slightest, we did fully expect him to live, if not forever, to at least 100. Sadly, a minor procedure in hospital resulted in him getting a hospital acquired infection that killed him.

Weren’t we lucky though, to have had them so long?

My Dad was 82; my Mum 92. Both had long, happy and fulfilled lives. We were very lucky.

Titasaducksarse · 11/11/2025 18:53

48

71, Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. A bastard disease.

DH's was 79, dropped dead with a heart attack, having refused for five years to go to the Dr.

Father died over the course of a year; FIL was instant and unexpected. There is no good way.

Mother is 89 and was as fit as a fiddle until she was 86.5 and needed a TAVI due to heart valve stenosis. She has become frail swiftly and is now being referred for suspected Parkinsons. It's awful to see her shake and tremble.

Age 70, he’d been diagnosed with bowel cancer at 65 but it had spread. He actually died from hospital acquired pneumonia after having chemo.

62, 80 seems a more than reasonable innings to me.
My Gran got to 98 but the last 15 years weren’t up to much, mostly chair/bed bound in a home.

Onelifeonly · 11/11/2025 19:11

Mine's 92 with no serious health conditions. Looks older in recent years but still walks every day and is cognitively as sharp as ever. He's always been health conscious and active and I am the same. It can't prevent everything but it certainly helps. All my grandparents lived to over 80 and one to mid 90s.

Dad 62.. Mum 62. Both heart related and very fast.
Im 67..
But they smoked. I don't.
If l live until im 80 in reasonable health both mind and body.. I'll be happy.
My Sister passed away last year age 71.
I do have 3 other sisters age 62... 72 and 74.

My dad is still alive and healthy at 80. FIL died in January of advanced dementia, he was 79 but had early onset Alzheimer’s and was bedbound in a nursing home. In the end he died of pneumonia, which they decided not to treat with antibiotics.

lemoncrisp · 11/11/2025 19:25

My dad was 96. He was 'ready to go ' at about 90. Deaf and tired of life but mum kept him going mainly because she was terrified of losing him. When he did die, mum was severely ill for a few months (lost the use of her hands!) but then she rallied and lived another 6 years pretty happily until she died at 100 years old!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/11/2025 19:27

72, too young, bastard bowel cancer.
DM went on to 97, but had Alzheimer’s for about the last 15 years. 🙁

Georgiepud · 11/11/2025 19:33

65 same age as my mum.

Ronniesgirl · 11/11/2025 19:46

My dad was 50, bowel cancer. I was 19.

Notyours1 · 11/11/2025 19:47

41, brain haemorrhage. He was dead and buried within 5 days. I was 20.

Wallawallakoala · 11/11/2025 19:53

My dad died at 36 unfortunately, sorry that’s not a helpful contribution!

UniversityofWarwick · 11/11/2025 19:54

My dad was 52. I was 6.

Whynot35 · 11/11/2025 19:55

32

Wtafisgoingontoday · 11/11/2025 19:57

My dad was 30, I cannot believe it was 48 years ago - seems impossible, I was 7 at the time.

ProjectsGalore · 11/11/2025 19:58

47 and it has shaped my adult life.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 11/11/2025 19:59

My dad was 78 but had a long history of serious illness, including CHF.

My mum is 83 and really well. Hopefully she will remain so for a long time

Elbowpatch · 11/11/2025 20:05

Early 90s. Died of complications following an accident. Sharp as a pin and active up until then.

Joystir59 · 11/11/2025 20:05

67

LindorDoubleChoc · 11/11/2025 20:06

My Dad was 81 and he died in 2011. He had lung cancer and had been a smoker for most of his life but not really post 60 (he sneaked the odd couple per day).

My Fil is currently 84 and has non-Hodgkins lymphoma, skin cancer and Parkinsons, and a family history of acute heart disease.

It's all a mystery.

feellikeanalien · 11/11/2025 20:07

Mine died at 91, 8 months after Mum who was 87.

Pianoaholic · 11/11/2025 20:19

My dad was 74 and died from prostate cancer which he was diagnosed with age 69.
This was in 2019. It had spread outside the prostate.
My mum died 3 years ago aged 75 from a brain tumour.
Her mum died in 2018 aged 99, the year before my dad, so she was a generation older really.
