How old was your dad when he died?

I posted earlier but didn’t get any responses, my wonderful dad is 81 and I’m starting to think and wrap my head around the fact he’s not got very long left given he has heart disease and seems to be declining.

My colleague said she thought this wasn’t that old, whereas I thought anything above 80 was.

How old was your DF when he died?

94 and he enjoyed fantastic physical and cognitive health his whole life (apart from the dying bit, but an extremely short illness saw him off).

AND he’d smoked heavily for at least 50 of those years.

PegDope · 11/11/2025 15:34

My Dad was 48.

Sepsis after he contracted MRSA in the hospital after surgery. He’s had a heart attack and the surgery was for a bypass.

If he didn’t smoke and eat carbs out the wazoo (shredded wheat for heart health eh?) he could easily have lived a long life. He wouldn’t have needed surgery and wouldn’t have caught MRSA.

83, but had been in poor heath for a few years and didn't have a good quality of life. I was devastated and still miss him terribly 8 years later.

My mum is 86 and still doing pretty well, no serious health issues, still living independently and mobility is decent. I hope I have her for a good few years yet, but when the time comes I hope she goes suddenly in her sleep and doesn't have a single day of suffering.

My Dad was 80. He had lung cancer then had a stroke. He was fit and active until 78, My grandfather was 83 and fit until over 80.
My ex (my DC Dad) was only 53 when he had a stroke.

@CatWithThreeLegsthank you for sharing this and I’m so sorry that must have been so unexpected and such a huge shock. I do worry my dad would do this, the thought has crossed my mind but then I just try and think about something else. If you don’t mind me asking how did he do it? I would like to try and reduce the chances..

My Dad was 86 when he died. He had COPD and other medical conditions which worsened. He developed pneumonia which would not lift and went into multi organ failure.

That was over 4 years ago now. My mum is 90 and still around. She also has COPD but is stable for now. Both parents were lifelong dyed in the wool smokers although my Dad did give up a couple of years before he died. My mother now vapes rather than smokes. I know vapes have their controversies too, but this is about as far away from cigarettes as we will ever get her, and believe me they (vapes) are far preferable to the thick, dark and stinky cloud of cigarette smoke that always used to follow her around.

61 cancer

Waitingfordoggo · 11/11/2025 15:47

Mine was 66, and he was a very fit and healthy man who looked after himself. Very unlucky. Mum was 65- also fit and healthy and took care of herself. Very bad luck. I don’t anticipate a long retirement for myself- especially as I probs won’t retire till 70. 😂

Over 80 is a very good innings in my book.

OnlyOnAFriday · 11/11/2025 15:50
  1. was right as rain one day, at death’s door the next. 6 months in hospital and eventually diagnosed with a rare condition. Not cancer but had to have chemo which gave him lymphoma which killed him quite quickly

My mum was early 70s

IlonaRN · 11/11/2025 15:50

48 😢
I was 11

Fantomfartflinger · 11/11/2025 15:52

Mine was 83 and was being kept alive for a while. I think 80s is old but I can understand why people think early 80s is a shame to die as people often live longer. I have known a few people whose parent died at say 89 or 92 and they acted like they were taken too soon, I thought that was odd.

Starlight1984 · 11/11/2025 15:54

51

  1. He was very fit and healthy until he suddenly wasn't, and died within a couple of months of a terminal diagnosis. His parents both died in their 60s. I think once there's a serious deterioration in health it's less of a shock than someone suddenly dying of a heart attack or in an accident. That's not meant to sound obvious or callous. My mother was much younger when she died unexpectedly, and although it was many years ago I still think she ought to be with us. I don't think that about my dad.
setadriftonmemorybliss · 11/11/2025 15:57

45 - a car accident. Here one minute, gone the next. 🙁

Mine was 88 but he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at 72. So cruel as he was an active, non smoking non drinking chap who deserved a long and healthy retirement. He developed Parkinson’s related dementia so the last 5 or 6 years of his life weren’t the best in terms of quality.

Mine was 87, same. Very fit and active. Non drinker non smoker but developed Parkinsons Disease in his 60s.

BigGapMum · 11/11/2025 15:58

Dad is 94 and has been unwell with multiple morbidities, including heart disease, for many years. He has a triple heart bypass over 30 years ago. Many times he's taken a downturn and we've been told to prepare outselves but he bucks up and pulls thorough. I'm amazed he's lived so long. You just can't tell.

hobbledyhoy · 11/11/2025 16:02

66

Happyjoe · 11/11/2025 16:02

Mum 71, dad 75. Both cancer (we have a lot of cancer in immediate family).
But partners dad, who passed away in June was 95. There's no way of really telling imo, when it's their time it is.

Just enjoy your dad while you still have him. I should imagine your colleague was just saying it to be nice, 81 is getting to be a very good age imo.

steepdreams · 11/11/2025 16:05

He was 58. Cancer stole him in a matter of months. He was very fit & very rarely drank. It was an out of the blue diagnosis that destroyed our world. I would have given anything for my dad to turn 60, let alone 80. I miss him everyday. Hold yours tight

BauhausOfEliott · 11/11/2025 16:07

My dad died six weeks ago. He was 83.

3peassuit · 11/11/2025 16:08
  1. He was fine until the last year when he seemed tired and confused. He died after a fall.
shiningstar2 · 11/11/2025 16:10
