How old was your dad when he died?

I posted earlier but didn’t get any responses, my wonderful dad is 81 and I’m starting to think and wrap my head around the fact he’s not got very long left given he has heart disease and seems to be declining.

My colleague said she thought this wasn’t that old, whereas I thought anything above 80 was.

How old was your DF when he died?

My brother was 66 when he died last year, his daughters were 37 and 38. Devastating 😢

Davros · 11/11/2025 16:36

64

Alltheburpees · 11/11/2025 16:40

Ninety four. Fit and independent before simply dying of old age. Miss him so much.

My Dad died nearly two years ago aged 89 .He had been unwell for a few years with various ailments and was then discharged home on palliative care which he survived for 8 months .I looked after him with the help of carers at home until he died .My mum had developed Alzheimers during this time and is now in a care home aged 88 .This is so much harder to cope with in my heart .But I appreciate the luck I had in having both my parents for such a long time .I was so so lucky and reading the above posts reaffirms that for me .Some of you lost your dads so young .Life can be so cruel.

He’d had a stroke at 83 but was still walking with a stick, enjoying his hobbies etc

Mo819 · 11/11/2025 16:46

My df was 65 heart attack my dm went the same way 18 month later.

Libellousness · 11/11/2025 16:47

He was 87. He’d had two forms of cancer in his early to mid 70s, both treated successfully, and then enjoyed about 10 years in fairly good health, but about a year before his death he fell and broke his pelvis, and it was downhill from there.

DH’s dad is still alive at 96.

Stormyday34 · 11/11/2025 16:47

My dad was 55. It was almost 20 years ago and I still miss him!

Giantsandcastle · 11/11/2025 16:51

Fit and very active until he was taken ill suddenly. Three weeks later he was gone. Brain tumour.
Both his parents and his brother all died before 55 of heart attacks or stroke so he did quite well.
It's been two years and I still can't believe he's gone. I'm glad he didn't suffer a long decline but it was just so sudden and still feels unreal.

Rockfordpeach · 11/11/2025 16:53

49 far too young

DoAWheelie · 11/11/2025 16:55

68, he died very suddenly in his sleep with no warning.

zoemum2006 · 11/11/2025 16:56

My MIL died when she was 55 (DH was 13) and my FIL died when he was 87 (DH was 24).

I met him the year afterwards so I never knew my in-laws.

unicornsarereal72 · 11/11/2025 16:56

My dad had lung cancer at died at 79. He had a full and happy life. Even in his illness. We were very privileged to have the last year of life to be with him. My grandad is 98 and still going but last 2 years has needed full time care. And to be honest just wants to die now.

Hereforthecommentz · 11/11/2025 16:58

My oh mum died last Xmas at 61 my aunt at 66. Grandparents 73 and 74. I think if they get to 80 that's a very good age to be honest. I imagine it's very painful losing a parent at any age but losing them young is particularly cruel l as you would feel robbed of time. My parents are now 70 dads having dementia tests I do realise they've probably only got a few years left realistically. It's quite a scary thought.

Curiousrobin · 11/11/2025 16:59

64 - He had pancreatic cancer, lived for a few years after initial diagnosis so was actually one of the 'lucky' ones. 80+ seems old to me! But then again I have a grandmother who is in her 90s!

Htcunya · 11/11/2025 17:01

65 of a heart attack. He had no retirement. Mum died very young when I was small.

Mammut · 11/11/2025 17:03

36, brief illness

Pootle40 · 11/11/2025 17:09

Interested to see the stats as I thought it was closer to 80?

Lifetime life expectancy is lower because the average is brought down by the deaths of young men. Once you have actually made it to 80, the life expectancy for an 80 year old is above 80.

So many sad stories of dads lost young on this thread Flowers

My Dad died at 80 after 2 years of dementia. His own dad died of cardiac arrest at 50, so Dad always felt he was very lucky to live to old age.

Nearly 88 but I think 80 is a good age for a man. His dad was 87 too and his mum 90.

Early eighties for women is a very common age if you look at gravestones. Mum was 85 and didn't drink or smoke...her mum was about 83 but drank and smoked quite a lot. Her dad was 64 but smoked 100 cigarettes a day (boasted that he'd cut down to 60 when he was ill) so he did pretty well.

Cardiac arrest

Changename12 · 11/11/2025 18:40

96 and I have absolutely no idea how his liver lasted that long. He may have kept in good health because he didn’t spend his time concerned about anyone but himself.
He smoked until his 80.

ApathyCentral · 11/11/2025 18:42

76 so I strongly recommend spending as much time with him from now as you can if yours is 81. You can tell when the heart starts to fail (bluer lips, swollen legs, etc) and it’s only about 5 years max left from then.
