How old was your dad when he died?

I posted earlier but didn’t get any responses, my wonderful dad is 81 and I’m starting to think and wrap my head around the fact he’s not got very long left given he has heart disease and seems to be declining.

My colleague said she thought this wasn’t that old, whereas I thought anything above 80 was.

How old was your DF when he died?

Late 60s heart attack x

Ihavepaidalotforthisstory · 11/11/2025 16:12

Your are right and your colleague is wrong. The average life expectancy for males in the UK is approximately 79 years old (for the period 2021 to 2023), though recent data shows a slight decline compared to pre-pandemic levels.

  1. I was only in my 20s. Too young. Much love to you and your dad
farmergirl15 · 11/11/2025 16:15

Mine was 53

Zov · 11/11/2025 16:17

Late 70s. So was mum.

tobee · 11/11/2025 16:17

It's just impossible to tell exactly when.

Mil died unexpectedly at 64 and fil unexpectedly at 77.

Even though my dm and df are 89 and 90 with multiple health problems and a few hospital admissions this year; you just can't predict. Other than a vague guess.

I've just tried to live with the worry, by putting it on the down low. Otherwise I'd be permanently on edge, the stress would take its toll on me.

Musicaltheatremum · 11/11/2025 16:17

My dad is currently 93 and slowed down since mum died in 2022. Nothing really wrong with him otherwise. No hear disease or anything but has developed epilepsy.
His dad was 59
My first husband 50 of a brain tumour. My children really miss him and he was ill most of their childhood so it's been hard

My FIL died recently aged 97. He was amazing but his heart failure suddenly got the better of him this year. He was independent at home prior to this. Amazing man.
I feel for all those who have lost their dad young. My daughter really feels the fact that he's missed all her achievements.

Hatty65 · 11/11/2025 16:18

My Dad is 89 and still pretty fit, his dad was 94 when he died.

Samiloff · 11/11/2025 16:20

41, died at home from massive heart attack. I was six and remember it well.

Keepsmiling2948 · 11/11/2025 16:21

61, it was sudden, and horrendous, and only 18 months after his Dad died at 84.

I consider anything over 80 to be an expected death/easier to accept and have felt those funerals to me more a celebration of life than mourning a loss.

jelllyontheplate · 11/11/2025 16:23

I wouldn’t say it’s really old anymore. My dad is 83 and not showing any signs of stopping. Often off on driving holidays alone and at his home gym everyday. My step dad was 75 when he died of a brain tumour. My mum was 71, lung cancer. For a bit of perspective all of them had parents live well into their 90’s, except my mums dad who died in his 50’s.

willitevergetwarm · 11/11/2025 16:24

My Dad was 47
My first husband was 52

Life is very cruel sometimes

whatsnewpussycat34 · 11/11/2025 16:25

64 - alcohol related illnesses. Surprised he lived as long as he did to be honest.

At 81 life expectancy for a man in the UK is 89. That means 50 % of 81 year old men will live to 89 or older. Your Dad has had a long and hopefully happy life.

We all have to die at some point. There's no point worrying about it because you can't change it. Dad died at 71 after a few years of ill heath due to cancer. It does mean I remember him as a fit and healthy man in his 60s rather than how I remember FIL who died at 84 after a long decline.

Interested to see the stats as I thought it was closer to 80?

TamarindCottage · 11/11/2025 16:26

My paternal grandfather was 45, my dad was 89
my maternal grandfather was in his 70s, my mum 80
my FIL was 54, my MIL 85

Zov · 11/11/2025 16:28

Such a lot of premature death of parents on here. I am so sorry everyone who lost a parent at a young age. Flowers 😢❤

AdoraBell · 11/11/2025 16:28

My father was 72 and mother about 73, maybe 74.

Lovelyview · 11/11/2025 16:29

Dad was 67 and died of bowel cancer. Mum is 84 and going pretty strong. I think over 80 is definitely in winding down territory. However, her Dad lived to 102 so there's some longevity in the family.

minmooch · 11/11/2025 16:29

Dad was 79 but was incapacitated with dementia from age 74. Mum was 70 but was ill for 2 years before that with cancer.

darling son was just 18 from cancer.

im 58 and hoping I’ve got a good few years ahead of me but we never know what’s around the corner.

Vicliz24 · 11/11/2025 16:30

My lovely pop was 63 and 1 day bless him .

PeachBlossom1234 · 11/11/2025 16:31

My dad is still here at 78 - so far he's survived a ruptured aortic aneurysm and a fall that left him with a brain injury....my mum died at 60 of lung cancer.

I'm 43 but had breast cancer at 39.....I've been thinking about my own mortality a lot recently. I want to live to be old and see my DD grow up

BerolDryWipe · 11/11/2025 16:32

My Dad died in September, aged 65, he'd had terminal cancer for 3 years.
