And now it begins!!!

My son says the question was:
The distance from the earth to the moon is 30X the earths diameter. The earths diameter is roughly 12,960km. The speed of sound is 300 m/S. A rocket goes at the same speed. How long would it take the rocket to get to the moon and back. He also got 60 days.

grebnew · 20/01/2019 09:09

((12960100030*2)/300)/60/60/24=30 days... no?

Mastfam · 20/01/2019 09:14

Naturenurture hope that's the correct answer my DS just guessed as he ran out of time. Thought the question was really interesting so wanted to come back home and solve.

grebnew · 20/01/2019 09:17

I'm sure it doesn't matter. Most will have guessed at the last few. It's great they are such keen problem solvers though!

Elpis2019 · 20/01/2019 12:04

Yes grebnew I think you are right -
Distance to moon is:
12960 x 30 = 388800km
Speed in km per h is:
300 x 60 x 60 / 1000 = 1080 km p h
Time taken for a one way trip
Is:
388800 / 1080 = 380 hours or 380 / 24 = 15 days. So for a round trip it’s 30 days, if the order was as mentioned in previous posting the answer would have been B.

GHS and Tormead?

grebnew · 20/01/2019 14:55

Yes, GHS and Tormead out yesterday.

Kukac · 20/01/2019 19:39

Do you know roughly how many kids they take per yeargroup? And how many applied this year?

Mastfam · 20/01/2019 21:05

380 applied with about 130 seats

Elpis2019 · 20/01/2019 21:14

Apparently a fair number did not turn up - not sure why?

OP posts:
Detege · 21/01/2019 07:08

That seems low. A lot less than previous years. Last year there were 700 applicants

grebnew · 21/01/2019 08:27

I don't know about others, but had KCS Wimbledon been on any date bar the 12th, DS would have sat that exam. RGS has always been our first choice though, so we gave KCS a miss.

grebnew · 21/01/2019 09:18

The 2018 thread says c400 sat the exam. Not sure where these numbers come from but I would guess this year is not so drastically different to other years.

Elpis2019 · 21/01/2019 09:21

I thought on Saturday 12th they said c.a. 450 supposed to sit exams a portion were 13+?

OP posts:
Mastfam · 21/01/2019 09:52

The 380 and 130 I mentioned earlier was directly from Mr Cox and the admissions head as we were walking out on the 12th hence would not trust anything else!

Graziac · 21/01/2019 18:01

Has anyone received the "no" letter yet ?
Thanks.

Elpis2019 · 21/01/2019 18:17

Congratulations to you and your DS! (What time does your post get delivered?!)

Mastfam · 22/01/2019 06:28

Thank you. Knowing he has secured a place is such a relief. Received an email no posts!
