At Home Insemination - Buddies?

999 replies

For several reasons hubby and I are going down the route of at home insemination. It can be quite a lonely process I think - does anyone want to join me and we can go through it together/share tips etc?

Bit of background - we've tried for 2 months now both unsuccessful. I'm using clearblue ovulation detector to get my peak, and we've been doing the insemination every day from when I get my flashing smiley to the day after the peak, give or take the odd day! Using 10ml syringes and laying down afterwards for 20-30 mins.

Finding the 2ww a real struggle, and my heart breaks every time AF comes! I know it's only been 2 cycles and could take a lot longer so need to be patient! Altho feel like everyone around me is having babies which doesn't help!

Anyway sorry for going on - anyone want to join and share their experiences/tips? Need some motivation and hope!

Loving your work @ChunkyButFunky87

Trixabelle84 · 09/07/2020 20:43

Hi everyone, how are you all?

@chunkybutfunky87 sorry to hear AF arrived 😔 AF was due yesterday for me but no sign as yet, tested this morning and BFN so think it's just late. Will test again in the morning if still no sign

Trixabelle84 · 09/07/2020 21:00

Spoke too soon, AF just arrived 😔 Disappointed but not surprised as didn't think it had worked this month x

Alwaysinpain · 09/07/2020 21:06

Hi I'm considering doing this but no idea where to start! How do I find a donor? I understand a bit about cycles, cycle lengths and that we have only a few days where we're ovulating - is that what you're calling a luteal phase?
What is a surge?

Thanks

Busybee143 · 09/07/2020 22:18

@Waiting2BAMummy
Ah right so you inseminate a couple of days before ovulation too, just trying to get my timing right

Waiting2BAMummy · 10/07/2020 21:03

If you ovulate on day 15 @Busybee143 I would do days 12 & 14 because you need the swimmers to be in the right place waiting for when the egg is released. If you wait until the day of ovulation you might miss your window as it can take up to 12 hours for the swimmers to get to where they need to be.

I found my donor on a site called co-parents @alway @Alwaysinpain you can join and search for donors in your area for free but then you have to pay a subscription to be able to send and receive messages. Your LH surge is luteinizing hormone and this surges 12-24 hours before ovulation. This is what ovulation tests look for and you get your positive test at the peak of your surge. Your luteal phase is the period commencing the day after you ovulate until your next cycle starts.

Sorry AF got you @Trixabelle84 I hope next month is your month.

Hi all, hoping it's ok to jump onto your thread and ask some questions!
@Waiting2BAMummy - with the co parent website is there anything legal in place to ensure the donor can't just turn up in a few years and decide he wants some form of custody? My main reason for going down the donor route is so that neither me or any future child ever have to go through any form of custody battle again. I've already had 1 failed cycle of IUI with donor sperm from Cryos so all legalities were in place, but financially I just can't have many more attempts doing it that way!

Waiting2BAMummy · 10/07/2020 21:59

Hi @Mac89 unfortunately not. If want something fully airtight you would need to have something drafted by a solicitor. Though depending where you meet your donor and how much information you give them about yourself it would be kind of difficult for them to track you down to fight for parental rights.

Mac89 · 11/07/2020 09:28

@Waiting2BAMummy that was exactly what my mum said "Use someone 200 miles away and go to them, how could they possibly find you!" Definitely something for me to look into further I think 😊

ChunkyButFunky87 · 13/07/2020 18:24

@Trixabelle84 sorry she got you too!

Few more announcement last few days, still within the same dates, and I still sit quietly green in the eyes thinking that should be me. I don't think that will go away until we hopefully get pregnant again.

It's safe to say I've never comprehended the impact of miscarriage fully, like I knew it must be shit, but my god, it's full on kick the wind out of you shit and it feels like when I've 'forgotten' it for a second something comes that gets you again and reminds you of what could have been.

Anyhoo! It's good to just express it here and get it off my chest

Here's to a fertile end of July!

Waiting2BAMummy · 13/07/2020 21:11

I hear you @ChunkyButFunky87 one of my colleagues at work is due the exact day I would have been and I find myself constantly working out how far gone I would be now. It’s pointless and it does nothing but make me feel like crap but I can’t seem to stop myself.

I finally managed to get two donations in this weekend on days 14 and 16 but the month I conceived I did 12 & 14 so can’t help but think I’m too late this month. I was obviously meant to be seeing my other donor days 10-12 and didn’t want to mess my second donor around by changing the days when we’d already arranged it so I just left it. Can’t help but feel this is another wasted month now though.

Hope you have better luck this month.

So I missed last month I'm so planning on traveling a couple days before I believe I ovulate although I'm still tracking. This would be in about a week and half. I'm still so nervous. Especially as I've seen some peoples donors don't turn up. I believe I've asked evreything know name, why they doing it etc have a recent photo and even one of a child in the family. They are mixed race and I'm white but I'm happy with this. Here's to a fertile month!

Sorry about that ! Don't know why it posted that much !

Waiting2BAMummy · 13/07/2020 21:52

I’ve arranged to meet four donors over almost two years @ohsotrying and only one of them didn’t turn up so your odds are pretty good. I also kind of knew he wouldn’t come as he was a bit of an idiot but I was desperate. Looking back now I’m glad he didn’t turn up!

Good luck

Busybee143 · 13/07/2020 23:10

@Waiting2BAMummy
You should be fine with those days, good luck

Busybee143 · 15/07/2020 23:30

@ohsotrying
How's it going? Any updates?

ohsotrying · 16/07/2020 23:40

Metting donor next week. But need some advice! I was organinaly planning On going day before ovulation and getting donation on the evening and next morning (twelve hours apart) but might go down evening before that. So evening next morning, that Evening, morning after. Is there such a thing as to many donations? I just wanted to cover more than a 12 hour period. I'm so nervous ! I've not managed to find a donor close by so it's a 5 hour trip and will stay over in a hotel.

Busybee143 · 17/07/2020 09:36

@ohsotrying
I would probably do it earlier as I think it's better to have the swimmers waiting there so I've been told and it seems to have worked for me in the past although I have ended up having two mc's so who knows!
I could be wrong but I think it's better if you leave 24-48 hours between donations but I don't know why, there must be plenty of people out there having more than this and getting pregnant so we probably need more advice on that question. Good luck!!

Waiting2BAMummy · 17/07/2020 13:05

They do say you should leave time in between donations to enable your donor to replenish ‘the goods’ @ohsotrying. That said, I have read stories of women who have ‘tried’ (in the conventional way) several times a day during their fertile period and conceived so I say if your donor is no prepared to do that many donations then go for it!

ohsotrying · 17/07/2020 14:11

Thanks ladies. I will leave atleast 12 hours between donations. I just know if I just listen to ovulation tests and wait for the peak I might miss it. So trying to plan for a couple days befor

Waiting2BAMummy · 17/07/2020 20:14

Many things I’ve read say you should be trying before your peak @ohsotrying as some women, especially as they get older, ovulation on the same day as their surge. It takes around 12 hours for the swimmers to get where they need to be so you could have missed the boat. As @Busybee143 says it’s better to have them there waiting. They can live up to 5 days whereas the egg is only around for 24 and some things I’ve read have said successful conception is only likely in the first 12.
