Things I wasn't aware of until I joined MN

This is meant to be light-hearted, as i'm snowed in and climbing the walls. If it gets 5 posts I'll be surprised.

Also this could end up with me and Belfastbloke posting.

But as a Dad wending my slightly puzzled way through life. Until I landed on MN I'd never heard, thought of or been aware of the following:

  1. Greggs sausage rolls and Fruit Shoots are considered the work of the devil. I love the sausage rolls.
  1. Wohm and SAHM debate, it's never cropped up before in my life, surely it's whatever suits each family.
  1. Boden. Never ever heard of it before.
  1. Breast and bottle feeding. Never really had an
opinion, if it wasn't working for the mother, fair enough I thought.
  1. Zombie plans. Absolutely brilliant idea.
  1. Pantenne, never heard of it but I'll give it a try. I
thought it was a shampoo.
  1. How many men are considered twats.
  1. Never seen the word cunt written down so many times and used in conversations.
  1. Never realized how many feisty intelligent women
there are out there and wish I met more like you in RL (sounds a bit arse-licky but true) as i don't like cars debating with men can be so boring.

Self-indulgent? Probably.

Bored out of my brains? Yes, I need to get out again
and participate in some sort of sporting activity.

Any more things men (or women) didn't know.

Or am I on my own in dadsnet?

Why would you buy Friends DVDs when e4 exists? Grin

Truckulent · 23/12/2010 22:47

I got them as a present. But they're all mixed up and I've lost one disc. Maybe I'll get it for Xmas.

Sorry, I was supposed to post on here to boost the number of posts, wasn't I?

Looks like you've done brilliantly without me, Truck.

Now if I could just have your opinion on the transfer window, in the other thread ...

Truckulent · 23/12/2010 22:58

I've posted in relationships, I think I've gone a step too far.

motherinferior · 23/12/2010 23:06

I have also learned from MN just how many women do all the domestic stuff. I was genuinely gobsmacked.

But then I am the sort of scary woman - apparently - who finds the Feminism section rather, well, easy-going. It's nice there.

Our zombie plan needs updating.

Truckulent · 23/12/2010 23:11

What's the answer to the domestic issue though?

I think a lot of it is to do with pressure on women, as they get judged on the cleanliness of the house.

OP posts:
motherinferior · 23/12/2010 23:14

Do we? Are we?

Probably so. But that's because, again, that it's assumed that women do the domestic stuff. And that men don't.

motherinferior · 23/12/2010 23:16

V tedious thing to judge someone on, though, surely? The state of their house?

My house is currently a bit of a mess (DP is ill, he can't get up and hoover Grin) but I'd really rather be judged on my ability to put a sentence together, not the number of Sylvanians strewed across DD2's bedroom floor.

BelfastRingingOutForXmasBloke · 23/12/2010 23:21

There are some things I would like to vent about/get advice on, re my relationship with my DW. But it's not worth posting it on MN.

There are some times where she is genuinely being unreasonable, or over-emotional. But were I to post about it, there would be just too many responses saying, "you're just being insensitive", or "it's your fault because..." or "give the poor woman a break".

I am well aware of my failings and blind spots in my marriage, and MN has made me even more aware of these, and how they might operate in my or my wife's subconscious. But when it ISN'T about me, it's hard having the majority of posts wonder if it is.

Truckulent · 23/12/2010 23:22

I agree.I only realized it from reading threads on here.

But doesn't it also tie in with the perfect Christmas pressure that's put women as well? My mum was getting me worried. 'have you done everything?' well i've bought the presents and got the stuff for dinner, what can I have missed?

OP posts:
Truckulent · 23/12/2010 23:23

Belfast. I dare you to post it in AIBU.

I had no idea how much energy people spent on babynames. I didn't even know that you were allowed to make up names or call them after a tree or a place.

CraigRevelPan · 24/12/2010 07:24

yes, justin, a thread specifically reserved for babynames just seems a waste of valuable cyberspace. I posted on there once against my better judgement, and felt cheapened by the experience. In a bad way. And no, you shoulnt be allowed to make up names, or name your children Hermione, boy or girl. It's just wrong. I will issue the 'approved list' later....

Agree with MI - feminist boards aren't really scary. Like other stuff here you just get into the debate you wish to and ignore the rest, if you can.

UnquietDad · 24/12/2010 11:24

bupcakes - yes, I phrased that very carefully (didn't say dumped her for...)

It's disturbing to me that George Lineker has, let's be honest, probably cracked one out over his new stepmum at some point in the past during his Internet meanderings.

TheTimesMNer · 24/12/2010 12:44

Best bit in FRiends is when Joey realises Monica and Chandler have been away for the weekend.....ooohhhh, ooooohhh, ohhhhh!!

bupcakesandcunting · 24/12/2010 15:31

I think it's disturbing how George Linekar looks like me melted waxwork of his dad.

Merry crimble!

Truckulent · 24/12/2010 15:36

Right, pressies wrapped, cards written, chestnuts roasting on an open fire. So...

Another thing I didn't know before MN, I'd never heard of Flight of the Conchords, read about them on a thread and now own both DVDs of their TV series, a not much known about gem.

He maybe dead, maybe he did what, he maybe dead, are you guys fucking with me?

OP posts:
Xenia · 24/12/2010 16:00

But why are these women pressured? Why are some of us not prepard to accept sexism and others aren't? Why are some mugs running round after idle others and some not?

TrillianAstra · 24/12/2010 16:26

Bst bit of friends is "but do they know we know they know?"

Truckulent · 24/12/2010 16:28

They want to mess with us?

OP posts:
bupcakesandcunting · 24/12/2010 20:15

Ha ha ha "he may be dead" "he maybe did what?" Love it! I love how every character in FotC is brilliant even Greg.

Truckulent · 24/12/2010 20:22

Top show, all great characters especially Mel.

Favorite song, If your into it.

OP posts:
bupcakesandcunting · 24/12/2010 21:49

I can't choose one favourite song but up there are Cheer Up Murray, hiphopapotamus v rhymnocerous and the one about the racist greengrocer.

"mother'ucker runs a racist 'ucking grocery. Mother'ucker won't sell an apple to a kiwi"

Brilliant!

Truckulent · 24/12/2010 22:45

Have you seen the live show with 'Jenny' ?

JustinCaseyHowls · 25/12/2010 02:37
