Things I wasn't aware of until I joined MN

This is meant to be light-hearted, as i'm snowed in and climbing the walls. If it gets 5 posts I'll be surprised.

Also this could end up with me and Belfastbloke posting.

But as a Dad wending my slightly puzzled way through life. Until I landed on MN I'd never heard, thought of or been aware of the following:

  1. Greggs sausage rolls and Fruit Shoots are considered the work of the devil. I love the sausage rolls.
  1. Wohm and SAHM debate, it's never cropped up before in my life, surely it's whatever suits each family.
  1. Boden. Never ever heard of it before.
  1. Breast and bottle feeding. Never really had an
opinion, if it wasn't working for the mother, fair enough I thought.
  1. Zombie plans. Absolutely brilliant idea.
  1. Pantenne, never heard of it but I'll give it a try. I
thought it was a shampoo.
  1. How many men are considered twats.
  1. Never seen the word cunt written down so many times and used in conversations.
  1. Never realized how many feisty intelligent women
there are out there and wish I met more like you in RL (sounds a bit arse-licky but true) as i don't like cars debating with men can be so boring.

Self-indulgent? Probably.

Bored out of my brains? Yes, I need to get out again
and participate in some sort of sporting activity.

Any more things men (or women) didn't know.

Or am I on my own in dadsnet?

Well they are shit aren't they?

  1. Wohm and SAHM debate, it's never cropped up before in my life, surely it's whatever suits each family.

People do have opinions in RL too, I do!

  1. Boden. Never ever heard of it before.

I had.

  1. Breast and bottle feeding. Never really had an
opinion, if it wasn't working for the mother, fair enough I thought.

It has cropped up often for me, mainly with friends feeling too embarrassed to feed their babies in public...either way!!

  1. Zombie plans. Absolutely brilliant idea.

Eh?

  1. Pantenne, never heard of it but I'll give it a try. I
thought it was a shampoo.

Not my favourite.

  1. How many men are considered twats.

This is pretty true, both my DH and I comment on H's behaviour all of the time!!

  1. Never seen the word cunt written down so many times and used in conversations.

Me neither, it's good.

  1. Never realized how many feisty intelligent women
there are out there and wish I met more like you in RL.

Have you been living under a stone??

scottishmummy · 22/12/2010 19:36

feminist section is v interesting does suffer from namecalling and that occasionally detracts from the discussion.

however the name-calling does make me smile for the rattle oot the pram daftness.
are you a troll
are you really scottish
are you a man
are you feminist
are you antifeminist
do you have webbed toes
whit about the menz

but id rather see people engaged and vociferously discussing mn topics than not,and there is wide range and depth of topics. some i dont foray into, for no deep reason other than just hasnt got me

bupcakesandcunting · 22/12/2010 19:51

I love you, scottishmummy!

Truckulent · 22/12/2010 20:00

I've dipped my toe in the Feminism section and it can be a bit scary.

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 22/12/2010 20:00

stoap it im blushing more than lorraine kelly meeting take that

OMaLittle · 22/12/2010 20:01

People change their sheets and towels DAILY????

scottishmummy · 22/12/2010 20:01

was it a hairy toe?did you ask what aboot the menz

scottishmummy · 22/12/2010 20:01

who has enough towels etc to change daily?weekly on sun all on for boil wash

Truckulent · 22/12/2010 20:11

I read that thread about changing sheets daily. There was another great thread about towels, cups and toilet rolls that had me boggling.

I would never say what about the Menz. Even if I've thought it.

bupcakesandcunting · 22/12/2010 23:05

I just saw UQD's post about bitchiness of women to other women/men being the enemy.

Men are not the enemy, not to most women anyway. Women aren't the enemy either. The individual is the enemy. I don't and never will understand why sone of us think that women are doing other women a disservice if we are rude about another woman. It's really patronising, IMO. I don't like that if I don't like another woman for whatever reason then I am carry and jealous rather than just ranking someone on their own merit. I don't see why we should cultivate this weird false solidarity/sisterhood just because we're all women. It's weird.

bupcakesandcunting · 22/12/2010 23:06

*catty and jealous. Blinking iPhone....

scottishmummy · 22/12/2010 23:09

naturally one dislikes individuals.thats the nub, dont generalise or transpose individual characteristics onto a group or gender

i cringe when i read those men/women are like this..XYZ general sweeping statement

there is no sisterhood,i have no natural affinity based upon gender,i have affinities based upon my experiences, preferences, upbringing

mena and wowmmn enrich my life.love em both

bupcakesandcunting · 22/12/2010 23:18

Me too SM. Plus I have very close girlfriends who are more beautiful/rich/successful/clever than me so the jealousy/threat thing is a bit odd.

scottishmummy · 22/12/2010 23:20

more beautiful/rich than you?is it Lorraine kelly?

UnquietDad · 23/12/2010 00:16

blinder - no, it wasn't like that at all. I haven't written anything off. That poster is pretty melodramatic, you are right there...
There is a difference between writing something off and deciding you are not going to post in that section any more.

UnquietDad · 23/12/2010 00:18

bupcakes - no, I don't believe women consider men the enemy either. That was just a flippant remark.

It is true though that I see more cattiness on here than in real life. Not no much at other posters, but towards Cheryl Cole and the like. Maybe here I am more aware of it.

Truckulent · 23/12/2010 04:08

I don't think anyone is reading anymore, but I've got more of a Why?

This is one I just don't get.

'My ex is a twat, we've got 3 kids and he's a dickhead'

'has he always been a twat?'

'yes'

I'm bouncing up and down, why did you have 3 kids with him? He was never going to change.

'when we met he usd to drink 10 pints a night and shagged anything that moved'

Did you expect him to turn into Jamie Oliver?
(What a horrid thought)

Anyway, one that always puzzled me.

Am I bothered because when I was younger I was a bit of a twat but not enough of a twat that hordes of women fell at my feet?

Probably.

OP posts:
Alouiseg · 23/12/2010 07:05

Those posts amaze me too! The amount of relationship threads that make me want to scream out "you should have been more circumspect!"

I see pretty young girls with idiot, dick head boyfriends and I want to grab them and tell them that they could do so much better. Why are some women so pathetically grateful just to have a boyfriend? Surely it's better to be alone than settle for a twat?

TheTimesMNer · 23/12/2010 07:20

I have a friend married to a man from elsewhere, he has two ex wives with four children between them. He has no or little contact with his dcs, she was amazed when three children in to their relationship he fucked off!!

Truck....I am sure you have gone to the feminist board and said what about the menz?

Truckulent · 23/12/2010 08:13

I have posted on the FemInist section, my posts were witty, non-sexist, relevant and well received all round, well something like that.

I would never say what about the Menz. I'd have The Big D, Her B, Scary Sakura and Even Scarier Spid on to me and that's more terrifing than going in the Beauty and Style section and posting over forties shouldn't wear make up and should wear sleeveless tops.

Truck you are so funny, this has made my last 3 days very entertaining.....Fankuuuuuu

Treats · 23/12/2010 10:38

Not to push the point but those astounding threads on the Relationship board are precisely why we need consciousness-raising threads on the Feminism board (and people like Dittany who are prepared to challenge accepted ways of thinking). And the Mumsnet Feminism board is the most accessible way for women to be introduced to what feminism really is - not man-hating, joy-killing absolutism - but how to make better choices and have more awareness.

UnquietDad · 23/12/2010 11:19

I'm wondering how much sleb "role models" have to answer for. You see women like Cheryl Cole, Abby thingy who's with Peter Crouch, and what's-her-name who was married to Tiger Woods, and you wonder why on earth they married self-centered alpha-male knobbers who were always going to stay self-centered alpha-male knobbers. Of course, they would never have looked twice at an "average decent bloke" as he wouldn't have been able to keep them in designer dresses.
