Things I wasn't aware of until I joined MN

This is meant to be light-hearted, as i'm snowed in and climbing the walls. If it gets 5 posts I'll be surprised.

Also this could end up with me and Belfastbloke posting.

But as a Dad wending my slightly puzzled way through life. Until I landed on MN I'd never heard, thought of or been aware of the following:

  1. Greggs sausage rolls and Fruit Shoots are considered the work of the devil. I love the sausage rolls.
  1. Wohm and SAHM debate, it's never cropped up before in my life, surely it's whatever suits each family.
  1. Boden. Never ever heard of it before.
  1. Breast and bottle feeding. Never really had an
opinion, if it wasn't working for the mother, fair enough I thought.
  1. Zombie plans. Absolutely brilliant idea.
  1. Pantenne, never heard of it but I'll give it a try. I
thought it was a shampoo.
  1. How many men are considered twats.
  1. Never seen the word cunt written down so many times and used in conversations.
  1. Never realized how many feisty intelligent women
there are out there and wish I met more like you in RL (sounds a bit arse-licky but true) as i don't like cars debating with men can be so boring.

Self-indulgent? Probably.

Bored out of my brains? Yes, I need to get out again
and participate in some sort of sporting activity.

Any more things men (or women) didn't know.

Or am I on my own in dadsnet?

Solodad. Do you mean the horrible stuff?

Truckulent · 21/12/2010 22:17

Oh yeh, Mooncups I think there are somethings I don't need to know much about.

Truckulent - I have been here 4 years and Dadsnet has always been a bit like a quiet, empty bar with the odd bloke nursing a pint, some football on a screen in the corner, a buxom barmaid looking surly...

...and a loud, wild, hilarious party of mostly women going on in the room next door.

Occasionally a tipsy woman will stagger in through the doors, clutching a bottle, wearing a party hat and blowing a party vuvuzela. She will then laugh uproariously at us, say what a bunch of saddos we are in here and invite us to come in and join the proper place if we have the balls. She will then slosh and teeter her way back through the door again, cackling madly.

Truckulent · 21/12/2010 22:22

UQD- I think you're about right.

TrillianAstra · 21/12/2010 22:22

There was a lot if cackling in November...

UnquietDad · 21/12/2010 22:23

I had never heard of Boden either... or Illy coffee... or "Kipling handbags..." And I am annoyed that nobody even sniggered on that thread when I asked if they were exceedingly good.

Ditto SAHM/WOHM "debate" - I was never even aware it was a "debate" before, just a decision based on circumstances... sometimes one forced on you.

Ditto BF/bottle.... FGS just do what YOU want and think best, is surely the answer to EVERY single thread on this.

Valpollicella · 21/12/2010 22:24

I learnt that blue waffles weren't waffles served cold

funkingcart · 21/12/2010 22:29

There are things you should never google.

Thanks for that one Val.

My life is so much the richer for having googled that one.

Xmas Hmm
Truckulent · 21/12/2010 22:30

Well said again UQD. With our DC breast feeding was tried for a bit and then they were bottle fed. They both seem to be doing ok. But I don't mind/care if women breast/bottle/wohm or sahm it is their choice.

I feel a little sad, shouldn't dads have somewhere just as interesting to hang out, exchange opinions, ask if their DW's ABU? Or are they just doing it IRL at the pub?

Truckulent · 21/12/2010 22:32

I'm not going to google blue waffle now.

OP posts:
Valpollicella · 21/12/2010 22:32

I didn't tell you to Google it, Funking!

UnquietDad · 21/12/2010 22:33

People have tried to set up various "Dadsnet" type fora in the past and they all falter. Because of lack of traffic, usually, and the same five blokes keeping it going, frantically trying not to talk about cars, football and Cheryl Cole's arse. And usually failing.

BertieBottlesOfMulledWine · 21/12/2010 22:33

UQD that's brilliant Grin

PS, is my boyfriend weird? I told him about mooncups and he barely blinked and said "Oh, okay, that makes a lot of sense."

funkingcart · 21/12/2010 22:33

Ah but Val you tempted me.

And I am very easily led astray

Xmas Grin
Valpollicella · 21/12/2010 22:35

Grin Sorry...

Truckulent · 21/12/2010 22:37

I can't see there being a male site like this. And I can't talk about cars or Chery Cole.

I flipping hate cars. I glaze over at work when they are discussed.

DH has agreed to come up with our zombie plan by noon tomorrow, if not I'm off to find a real man.

UnquietDad · 21/12/2010 22:40

If we dare to venture through The Door we will find it a lot more lively than Dadsnet.

I like the bunch sitting in the corner laughing outrageously at dirty jokes and usually drinking the most. They are the Sleb Twaddlers and X-Factor fans. Ribald comments are welcome here.

There is another lively table of political debaters. Go here with beer.

The Education Debaters are usually the ones standing up, waving arms wildly and grabbing newspapers off the rack to back up their points.

There is a long table of Chatters in the middle where people keep getting up and sitting down.

The Feminists sit in a dark corner, muttering, and will accuse you of vomiting on their table if you go and talk to them.

There is a separate room for Relationship counselling. It is upstairs, and has coffee and biscuits and cushions.

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 21/12/2010 22:42

there is a site called dadsnet but it really is only about 5 men and last posted on early in the year. definitely not teh MN equivalent.

Truckulent · 21/12/2010 22:42

UQD. The alarms have just gone off...they are coming.

OP posts:
CarGirl · 21/12/2010 22:44

Dh has found solace in retro gamers forum as he too has zero interest in cars and doesn't oggle and women too much

UnquietDad · 21/12/2010 22:46

I think CarGirl has the answer. There are other sites which are not "for men" explicitly, but tend to attract 90% men because of their nature: fora about cars, football, music, gaming, SF... They're not for dads exclusively, but the forum will extend its remit beyond the initial notion.

FoundWanting · 21/12/2010 22:49

As a family we have no zombie plan, so will be completely reliant on MN should such an attack occur.

We do, however, have a 'Day After Tomorrow'-inspired Ice-Age survival plan which would seem to be more imminently useful.
