Things I wasn't aware of until I joined MN

This is meant to be light-hearted, as i'm snowed in and climbing the walls. If it gets 5 posts I'll be surprised.

Also this could end up with me and Belfastbloke posting.

But as a Dad wending my slightly puzzled way through life. Until I landed on MN I'd never heard, thought of or been aware of the following:

  1. Greggs sausage rolls and Fruit Shoots are considered the work of the devil. I love the sausage rolls.
  1. Wohm and SAHM debate, it's never cropped up before in my life, surely it's whatever suits each family.
  1. Boden. Never ever heard of it before.
  1. Breast and bottle feeding. Never really had an
opinion, if it wasn't working for the mother, fair enough I thought.
  1. Zombie plans. Absolutely brilliant idea.
  1. Pantenne, never heard of it but I'll give it a try. I
thought it was a shampoo.
  1. How many men are considered twats.
  1. Never seen the word cunt written down so many times and used in conversations.
  1. Never realized how many feisty intelligent women
there are out there and wish I met more like you in RL (sounds a bit arse-licky but true) as i don't like cars debating with men can be so boring.

Self-indulgent? Probably.

Bored out of my brains? Yes, I need to get out again
and participate in some sort of sporting activity.

Any more things men (or women) didn't know.

Or am I on my own in dadsnet?

  1. That there was a boycott on Nestle, how have I been through College, Uni and worked for 11 years with a zillion beauty suppliers and never heard about it?
  1. That I have 1 argument with my DH, therefore he's a 'twunt' and I should divorce him oh and also because of the way I reacted I have no self esteem, okaaaay.
  1. That the word 'twunt' exists.
  1. That the world was so obsessed with Boden and the White Company!
kickassangel · 25/12/2010 04:04

i just googled 'blue waffle' Sad
life will never be the same again.

Merry Christmas from a slightly more enlightened man.

In some bored moments I've actually read a number of the Mooncups threads (one of several topics on which I've made a mental note not to post jokey remarks).

They seem really sensible to me, but DW not interested, nor are a couple of female friends who have EXTREMELY frank conversations with me. I'm hardly going to evangelise about it, beyond a couple of brief descriptive sentences.

Truckulent · 26/12/2010 09:31

I did have a big thread about this but I was very surprised about the sort of low level of contempt men are held in on MN.

There are already 2 threads going about how crap men are today.

It almost feels at times as if people are looking for an excuse to say 'men pah' and a competition on how crap their DP is.

I mean I'm perfect that can be the only reason I'm single, not enough of a challenge.

relationship threads - if I have ever wandered over there I usually find colditz or more usually custardo has said my peice already. Excpeted with brevity. And often graphically.

JingleBelleDameSansMerci · 26/12/2010 10:41

But, Truckulent, lots of men are crap. And so are lots of women.

I love the MIL/PIL threads. I don't have them and it's fascinating reading!

I'm quite shocked at how many people on here mantain a cheerful outlook despite some really awful things happening. I'm not sure I have the same gumption (for want of a better word).

JingleBelleDameSansMerci · 26/12/2010 10:42

Shocked was the wrong word - I re-worded the sentence. Surprised would have been more accurate.

Truckulent · 26/12/2010 10:52

Jingle I love MN as it is a reminder why I'm happy living on my own (with the DC) and can't see me living with someone else again.

I liked my in laws.

Xmas Smile

I find that too. I've not been having a great time lately but MN tends to either help me count my blessings or gives support when I'm a misery.

I'm a bad tempered, opinionated old bat. MN is perfect for me!

bupcakesandcunting · 26/12/2010 11:09

My husband is brilliant and my MIL is a delight. I can never join in the DH/MIL bashing threads. :(

JingleBelleDameSansMerci · 26/12/2010 11:11

bupcakes - honestly, you need to try harder to upset them!

Truckulent · 26/12/2010 11:46

Bup I dare you to post that in AIBU.

What angle should I go for to cause maximum wind-uppage?

alexqueue · 26/12/2010 20:26

Truckulent: pan-ay-toe-knee

UnquietDad · 29/12/2010 12:12

Another one:
Before I came on here, I seriously did not have a clue that there were women who bought the Christmas presents not only for their family but also for their DH's family. And that their DH expected them to do this.

??!!

What did the DH do before they were married?

Truckulent · 29/12/2010 19:44

UQD. I don't get all the Christmas hype anyway about the perfect Christmas.

Even though it is nearly perfect here as we have just retained the Ashes.

Xmas would last from the 24th to the 26th if I had my way. A present each and a roast dinner, job done.

But I agree about the presents, buy your flipping own. And if he doesn't it's tough on him.

OP posts:
Acanthus · 29/12/2010 19:58

I can see why a SAHM might do all theChristmas shopping. But why would a woman buy her DH's pants? Is he not an adult?

Truckulent · 29/12/2010 20:15

I think with Amazon etc around now there's no excuse for anyone not to do their own shopping.

OP posts:
UnquietDad · 30/12/2010 12:39

I just don't get it. With all due respect, I wouldn't want DW to get something for my mother or brother or niece because she might not get them the right thing. Any more than I would for her her parents or siblings or nieces and nephews.

blossom63 · 30/12/2010 16:24

ermmm s'not like you're ever gonna do this ??? but pannetone is grrreat inbread + butter pudding - AND much less soapy than pantene :)

blossom63 · 30/12/2010 16:28

Boden : thinking woman's crumpet catalogue - the ermmm male models - what we ALL wished more of you looked like... sort of daddyish/dependable/bit crumpled/very stylish/confident (enough to wear colours that usually only 'contintental' blokes get away with)/always smiling - and all that in a flowery shirt!

blossom63 · 30/12/2010 22:54

Brioche also makes maaaazin bread and butter pudding (with whiskey and stem Ginger)...

blossom63 · 30/12/2010 22:57

If being an adult were the only criteria that needed filling in order for men (grown ups) to do things for themselves... Well, wouldn't the world/relationships etc etc be a more harmonious place...

Truckulent · 30/12/2010 23:07

Too deep for me.
