Coming Clean by Liz Fraser

A couple of threads that I had posted on relating to the Memoir ‘Coming Clean’ by Liz Fraser have been deleted from the MN site, apparently due to non-compliance of the MN guidelines from the posters. MN are obviously well within their rights to delete threads if they demonstrably fail to comply with their guidelines, nevertheless I feel strongly that MN posters are given a platform to critique this book, and also any other public ventures by this author. It would be neither fair nor right that posters are completely silenced in this particular matter.

As such, and in line with Mumsnet not seeing “anything wrong with honest feedback” I would like to make the comment that Coming Clean as a Memoir falls short due to the shaky and not entirely truthful narrative. There are certain facts contained within this memoir that are easily disprovable (for example, relating to the marital status of both author and her partner when they started their ill-fated affair), which leaves a massive question mark over the rest of the book. Is it entirely reasonable to make money from something that is promoted as truthful when it is, in fact, not entirely true?

I think there are people whose lives have been negatively impacted by the book and its subject matter, and I hope that MN will agree that these people should have a voice, as should anybody who wants to comment on a published piece of work.

As long as posters align their comments with the MN guidelines, this is a topic that people may wish to keep discussing, and also keep in the public domain. And if MN wants to provide a set of rules particular to this thread – certainly if they are arbitrary and differ from the general guidelines - I am sure it would be very helpful.

Mumsnet, please help us to help each other by keeping in the public domain something that us silenced mums feel should be out there.

It is possible, @Umbrellaisback on Planet Liz, to suddenly be awarded a job that you have no background, qualifications, experience , CV, portfolio….
…. and have never mentioned any interest in, yet claim that it is what you’ve always wanted to do (just like Headcase, standup comedy, TV, writing, publishing…)

Exactly. An agency or someone employed on the back of an extensive portfolio rather than by grifting a night at said hotel and turning up out of the blue with a small child and a sports bra

The thing that is making me giggle is that she seems so surprised to have a job. She's a nearly 50 year old Cambridge graduate. I would expect her to have a bloody job, if not an established career. Funnily enough all my friends who are graduates have careers, as they've plodded through life's ups and downs, needing to earn money as they go. I don't know anyone in RL, other than a recent graduate, who could get so over excited about paid work.

My DD really struggles with Maths concepts, and even she would recognise a 50m pool.

Following which I swear a choir of angels could be heard singing in glorious triumph as, through tears of humble joy, I accepted ......"

I'm not even sure the hotel she stayed in has a "Director of Global Affairs". They do have a Director of Marketing and Business Development, who I would have thought would have been the person Liz needed to speak to about work. But they're a woman. Hmmm.

I wish my 'lived without safety' as mentioned by her in her wistful 'looking back at the past six days of privilige, I mean HAPPINESS' bollocks post; comprised of two fully paid up homes, financial security and the freedom to do exactly what I wanted without the fear the majority of 'unsafe' women and families have to experience.

I have spent over thirty years in my chosen career field. Not once did I walk out of a meeting having secured anything of this magnitude. I can’t make sense how someone on holiday just drops into a business and somehow is now changing the course of how that business is run. Someone with little or no experience is being given a very weighty job with huge responsibility.
Someone make sense of this please.

There's going to be a tantrum posted when Liz realises people can see through her nonsense. It'll be when she's been back in Oxford a while and is feeling bored and frustrated. She'll paint herself as a VICTIM of online stalking. It'll probably involve running and crying at the same time. Possibly in the rain.

Here's a question for those who understand Twitter. How does one go from very low engagement on the platform, with usually no more than 3 or 4 replies, to over 130 congratulatory ones, most of which just say one word: "Congratulations!"? Seems a bit fishy to me!

Don't really want to give the latest claims the tiniest bit of validation, because whatever Liz thinks she is achieving through this latest invention it certainly won't involve an income consistent with supporting a mortgage and lifestyle in Oxford for herself and her child. At the most it will involve mad, contradictory and bizarre SM postings, a bit of name-dropping and netting a few freebies, but there probably won't be sufficient income to cover more than a couple of Easyjet flights to Europe.

I think all of us here know what is involved in getting work, be it employment or contracting. These days a presentation to a panel is pretty much expected at a certain level, and decisions to hire are never, ever made there an then. And the presentation would follow selection from a short-list after submission of a CV, with any gaps in periods of employment fully explained. For self-employed contractors there would be an expectation of a portfolio of work, along with recommendations from previous employers.

There are many checks to be made prior to an offer of employment, including right to work etc, and most organisations with an HR department worth its salt will absolutely take up references.

So, I think the point I am trying to make is "Ms Fraser, tell me you have little experience of the working world without telling me you have little experience of the working world".

I hope the child is OK, because on a serious note, this latest is starting to really, really look like utter delusion.

All of this. I’m currently exploring employment opportunities and I’ve a solud work history. It’s tough out there. Competition is fierce. Employers xpectations are high. Most firms are laying off people. Marketing and Co tent teams are being hard hit. Sales and business development success is key to business survival. LinkedIn shows that many post are being readvertised because they can’t get the exact candidate they want. She is not the exact candidate. She has no business development track record. Sex might open doors… to a bed, but it’s not going to get a Co tract signed. As mentioned previously, global affairs is not PR, writing or media relations. PR is not business development. It’s top of the marketing/sales funnel. At best it raises awareness. Awareness is o my raised if copy is published, people see it and they respond.

just say she does have these three jobs. Well not be hearing g from her for a long time. She’s going to be working li g hours snd hard. Hospitality is a tough sector. Pay is not great either. Fancy hotels dont pay fancy wages.

Who the HELL does a home video of themselves taking their first antidepressant (or antipsychotic)? And plays the ridiculous video to the world? This is insanity personified. Does she think she's the centre of everyone's universe. I look at her Instagram and Twitter these days just for pure belly laughs.

She's not drinking the alcohol. It has too many calories for someone with her relationship to food. She is using the alcohol as an insta prop. Possibly to wind up her ex, possibly to make it look like she's having lots of FUN.
