Coming Clean by Liz Fraser

A couple of threads that I had posted on relating to the Memoir ‘Coming Clean’ by Liz Fraser have been deleted from the MN site, apparently due to non-compliance of the MN guidelines from the posters. MN are obviously well within their rights to delete threads if they demonstrably fail to comply with their guidelines, nevertheless I feel strongly that MN posters are given a platform to critique this book, and also any other public ventures by this author. It would be neither fair nor right that posters are completely silenced in this particular matter.

As such, and in line with Mumsnet not seeing “anything wrong with honest feedback” I would like to make the comment that Coming Clean as a Memoir falls short due to the shaky and not entirely truthful narrative. There are certain facts contained within this memoir that are easily disprovable (for example, relating to the marital status of both author and her partner when they started their ill-fated affair), which leaves a massive question mark over the rest of the book. Is it entirely reasonable to make money from something that is promoted as truthful when it is, in fact, not entirely true?

I think there are people whose lives have been negatively impacted by the book and its subject matter, and I hope that MN will agree that these people should have a voice, as should anybody who wants to comment on a published piece of work.

As long as posters align their comments with the MN guidelines, this is a topic that people may wish to keep discussing, and also keep in the public domain. And if MN wants to provide a set of rules particular to this thread – certainly if they are arbitrary and differ from the general guidelines - I am sure it would be very helpful.

Mumsnet, please help us to help each other by keeping in the public domain something that us silenced mums feel should be out there.

Who's going to hire her for website copy if she can't even proofread her own Instagram posts? She's so fake.

SplatPancake · 01/08/2023 14:36

MrsBowen · 31/07/2023 21:48

Guys, I just can't handle the instagram anymore. It's so bizarre and actually I almost feel sad for her. The number of posts, the manic quality to them. I can't.

Me too, I’ve had to mute her.

imagine being stuck with her in real life….

It must be mentally and emotionally exhausting. She is manic. In every context. That poor kid. I guess she’s known no difference so thinks this is normal behaviour. It’s NOT!!! Hopefully her dad has a TV, a sofa and a biscuit tin!

Liz would like us to know that S came with her on the PRIVATE taxi and got to sit by the hotel's pool (one of the BEST in the world, don't you know). She probably did some intellectual colouring whilst her mother flirted her way to a vague and insincere offer of work.

Supervised or unsupervised by the biggest SEA WATER pool in Venice? ‘Kin heck though, this is not normal by any stretch. The kids on my road have been kicking a ball at a fence ant then running away screaming for the past two days which is frankly driving me up the wall but hey, it’s what kids do. Creative it ain’t and foreign it’s not but they’re a mixed aged group looking out for each and making their own zero cost fun.

CambridgeBuns · 01/08/2023 16:56

Just a couple of thoughts:

  • She have gone to Venice last week to work and to Copenhagen this week
  • If it had to be Venice this week, could she have swapped weeks with M or brought her parents with her to help out?
  • Am I being just too practical, pedestrian and British?
RhinoRhino · 01/08/2023 19:40

New, new, new dream job?

Can’t tell us about it yet?

No need. I’ve worked it out already.

I’m guessing an 18-month residency at Hotel Cipriani. It’s a no-brainer. Liz will be their ‘resident swimmer’.

We’ve been told it’s a massive pool so she can dive and twirl and whirl, do manic top-speed lengths, surface at each end with a massive grin (and a quick check of the garmin), and occasionally pull up those naughty bikini bottoms …. all day every day, to entertain the high-end clientele. They can watch her pool gymnastics and furious length swimming as they take in the sun, sip expensive cocktails, make business deals etc etc

It’s a win-win. What’s not to like?

Dream job indeed!

Can’t see Edgeway press happening now she has a new dream
job maybe she is going to live in Venice and scout will live with her dad

Tortiemiaw · 01/08/2023 20:06

How many times can one person say they love a place? She's running out of expletives and fuck me it's dull.
Desperation calls for a bikini shot, I guess...

Edgeways Press is quite literally dead in the waters of luxury Venetian hotels. As of today, Lizzie of the worst horrors EVER EVER EVER is no longer selling herself as a domestic abuse survivor, oh no you silenced little ladies, Lizzie is now…. Rummages in dressing up box…. a…. travel writer/communications consultant.

So 🤬the lot of you who’ve toiled for years to build careers in this precarious industry, hard hit by the Covid years and cutesy cost of living crisis, Lizzie in her big girls pants, got up with the Brits abroad this am and has flung her towel on to your poolside sunloungers. Yep, suddenly, it’s ok to be a tourist. To relax and enjoy, rather than cycle 75km a day with a child strapped to your back with just a camera for company.

As my husband would crudely say, well fu(k my old boots, she’s actually bloody lost it, which about her, is quite some going!

Sea water pool. Keep up. Sea water…. Unique, not at all. I suppose not all travel consultants are experts.

Those hotels are serious five star fancy especially the cipriani. I know someone who stayed there once. Properly smart. I’m not sure a dress so short it’s almost showing your pants and bare legs with ancient converse is what I’d call appropriate workwear for such venues but each to their own and all that

Don’t be jels @Umbrellaisback. We didn’t see you being Buongiorno, signoraed off the perfect, elegant way her hand and arm was taken to help her off the water taxi and onto the land. I’ll bet you were heaving yourself into a car with a load of Tesco bags 👅😜😂

Raffington55 · 02/08/2023 01:50

The photo of her posing back at the camera with her feet pointing inward (I'm 'ickle') in that horrible black and white dress -- "take a picture of mummy, Scoutie, in her dress with her feet scrunched up and pointed inward like a child's". I'm starting to feel sick at all the staged photos that poor Scout has to produce. It's not ok.

RhinoRhino · 02/08/2023 07:30

More on the dream role …..

As dusk falls the swimming stops our heroine will sidle up to the poolside grand piano ready for ‘un po di mu’. Not a rousing plinkety-plonking of Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag …… it’s just got to be the ‘slow’ movement of Moonlight Sonata, played with a 'faraway look in her eye' …. (yes, I am pinching this image from EF Benson’s Lucia books). Following which, maybe a reading or two from Virginia Woolf, as the clientele sip on their post-prandial drinks.

What a job! The stuff of dreams indeed.

A few months ago Liz hinted her life expectancy had been shortened for some reason, and now she's posting about what she will be doing in her 90's. It's all just so confusing.

Shortbread49 · 02/08/2023 10:02

If I was hiring for a luxury Venice hotel and someone turned up with that footwear on, would put me off she needs a decent pair of shoes

Yeah but Liz thinks she's so captivating that she can get away with it. Why d'you think she's always boasting about wearing old clothes? She thinks her looks and fabulousness trump all the old rags. The journalist Chrissy Iley once wrote of Helena Bonham Carter that she thinks so highly of her looks that she dresses like an old tramp deliberately. Liz is the same. Always reminding us how old and shitty her clothes are because she thinks she'd look amazing in anything. Like Helena BC, she's that arrogant. Not only that, her constant references to her old rags are additionally just designed to pull compliments from her stupid fan base 'oh but you look amazing in anything'. Her need for admiration is a full time job. It must be exhausting to live it, and it's certainly tiresome and exhausting to observe it.

Umbrellaisback · 02/08/2023 14:41

I’m exhausted by the constant posts and stories of posts and retweets of posts and reminders of everything she has posted and oh here is a story in case you didn’t see I posted and here are my shoes again

Mumtobesept2023 · 02/08/2023 15:03

So the grift now is trying to be an Insta influencer? Cringe pieces to camera and a primary school child in a pram. She is off her rocker.

Tortiemiaw · 02/08/2023 15:58

I just watched the video (yes, I'm having a lie down now) Why was she sneering about the 'disgusting little boats'? Looked like well, little boats, to me. Don't they fit the faux richnesss of her AMAZING HAPPY LIFE?

Diamondstars · 02/08/2023 16:55

Shall we assume this is the only DM she’s had recently? Why share this one? It was sent in private or it would have been written on her grid. Let’s not jump to conclusions and accuse her of writing it herself. Unlikely coincidences like this can genuinely happen, I assure you, honest gov’nor.

S seems to be nothing but an inconvenience, L displaying a complete ‘I’ll shove her in the pram so I can run’ attitude. Why doesn’t she ride her the bike she’s waited two years for her to ride? Of course, she’s too slow and inconvenient for her.
It seems that so far, the trip hasn’t been planned for the poor child. I get that many of us have become too child-focused, but to not consider the wishes, wants and wellbeing of the child at all seems cruel.
This poor child’s childhood seems to revolve around constantly moving from place to place. With her newfound and much spoken about free time, why not consider working when S is with her dad and being more child-focused when she’s not L?
The poor child must be yearning for familiar things and interaction with English-speaking children, including her own friends and cheap plastic tat and Disney like any typical primary school child.
When it comes to GCSEs and needing to study history, the arts, how water rises through parents she’ll be so burned out by it all she’ll refuse to study. Her older children’s school was full of children like this, though she wasn’t about, even when Cambridge so wouldn’t know this.

AppleBlossomTimeNow · 02/08/2023 17:25

Why is Scout being pushed around in a pushchair?! She's at school for goodness sake. That's mortifying. Why is Liz's run more important that Scout's comfort & dignity?
