Life go to the little man in Durham and get a reconditioned Bernina or Brother. I'm no great sewer but that's where mine came from I've had it 15 years, it's about 15-20 years older than that I reckon and it's absolutely fine. A workhorse with no fancy pants electronics to go wrong

I rate my Janome one - the model will depend on what you want to sew. In retrospect I wished I had gone for one with a longer arm so I could quilt more easily and a larger motor so I could use it for mending the outdoors things.

ChristmasSeacow · 26/04/2020 09:52

I really rate my Janome too.

northender · 26/04/2020 10:36

Life I've got Janome too & am really happy with it, but Bernina and Brother are just as good I think. Bambers in Manchester is a great shop & they are the only 3 makes they stock.

ememem84 · 26/04/2020 10:37

I e bought a brother one from very. £117. It’s a beginner but a brand I knew. I’ve used a janome one previously but couldn’t stretch that far for one that’ll probably be used once or twice a year.

lifelongfrugaleer · 26/04/2020 12:26

The janome 525 is the one used on sewing bee. Been replaced by a 725 version.

Doh they're is a sewing shop in my town who have joined up with a place in Richmond n Yorkshire which is 30 minutes from here

Will keep looking at might need a refresher class too.
Back down the rabbit hole. ..

northender · 26/04/2020 12:58

sea how is today's bread?

SnugglySnerd · 26/04/2020 13:28

My sewing machine was my grandmother's. It is a beautiful old singer and you have to turn a handle. I don't see with it because it is so old and also because I am clueless but I won't part with it! I have often considered buying a cheap basic one e.g when they have them in Aldi. Are they worth it to learn on?

Nice day so far. Went for a walk and heard a cuckoo and a woodpecker drumming. Leftovers tapas for lunch. Going to clear out 2 drawers of my wardrobe in a minute. They have no clothes in them and have become a bit of a dumping ground for stuff that has no proper place.

Ooh I really want one of those Snuggly! Not to sew with but just for the beauty of them. Does it come on one of these tables with the lovely ironwork treadle? I am Envy

North the bread was much better, thanks. I think it must have been too wet last time. Only 20ml
difference but it showed!

Welsh cakes were lush. I gave some to my NDNs over the fence while still warm. It was only a small batch but very quick and easy so I’ll defo make them again. Kids wolfed them down.

We’re having this for dinner:

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/sticky-lime-roast-chicken

I think the Dcs will be disappointed it’s not the usual roast chicken but I was getting very bored of that! I’m going to serve with either stir fry noodles or rice. Maybe rice. Easier and the DCs might actually eat some. With stir fry veg which they won’t touch

We’ve done a bit more tidying in the garden today and it’s looking pretty good! I’ve set up my new tomato planter things that keep them watered consistently, ready to pot the tomatoes in. I’m hardening off the tomato plants this week before planting them out. I’ve also sowed some salad leaves in a pot and planted up some trailing fuchsia plug plants that DH found for sale at the greengrocers yesterday. That’s the hanging basket sorted, hopefully. I have two more pots free in my irrigated system, against a sunny fence, and would like to try growing courgettes and peppers but I don’t have any seeds. Do you think the seeds Directly from a pepper might work? I’m never sure about the garden viability of the type they grow commercially. Can’t get hold of courgette seeds though.

Still need to plant the sweet pea seeds but not sure where to sow them. We’re running out of pots - and space - and compost! And sadly no sign of termination from my sunflower seeds. They’ve been in the kitchen but not in the sun - do you think that makes a difference?

I MUST go to the food bank drop-off place today . There’s been a pile of stuff in my hallway for a week now Blush

SnugglySnerd · 26/04/2020 16:54

Yes that's the sort Sea!

Taytocrisps · 26/04/2020 22:22

Just had a hilarious family zoom chat (our first - we're a bit behind the rest of you). Dad managed to connect ok but at some point he wandered off to make a cup of coffee! Then the sound of the weather forecast entered our zoom chat and we realized Dad was tuning us out and was watching the news/weather forecast instead Grin. We've arranged a family quiz night for next Sunday. DD and I will do a movie round.

northender · 26/04/2020 23:56

I ended up mostly sewing today. It's a great distraction. I've got 2 projects on the go, one for us which is the green & floral one to use up the collection of floral fabrics I've accumulated and one for friends using a jelly roll of fabric (started it at a workshop just before lockdown). The bright one is a pair of cushion covers done in bargello pattern (again, started at a workshop). I already had all the fabrics, so no additional costs yet.
Had a lovely roast beef dinner tonight. It was brisket & was delicious.

North you are soooooooo talented.

I cooked a proper recipe last night - lemony roast chicken legs with capers. It was so nice to make something that wasn't the same old.

I now have another joyful day of work... see you all later.

SnugglySnerd · 27/04/2020 07:13

Those are amazing North. I love the brightly coloured ones.

ememem84 · 27/04/2020 07:14

I also did some sewing yesterday. I bought a cross stitch kit. And am going to hang it in our downstairs toilet.

When finished it will say “have a nice poop” and will have roses in the background.

@mrsmadevans treat yo self
You have a good day too x

Unescorted · 27/04/2020 13:04

You can have some of our sunshine Mrs It was supposed to be gash here and it is yet another sunny day. Not as warm but not raining. I am going to finish early and do another bit of weeding later.

I am with rainbow on this - I had a bad patch a few weeks back (this is my 9th week of wfh / isolation) I find my mood goes in waves - some days I am loving it, others I am bouncing off the walls in frustration.

I have done my first home school nag of DS - he is very idle but bright. A frustrating combination.

Lovemaltesers · 27/04/2020 13:25

Fed up here today. Internet has been very slow which made getting the DCs work off online classrooms painful and impossible for us to do any work.

Going for a walk in a bit to blow the cobwebs away I hope. Last nice day here for a while, due to rain for the next week now.

My Dad has had a further decline on his grip on reality this last week. I saw him when I dropped off my parents shopping and came home and cried. Bloody dementia. I also feel very sad for my mum as once lockdown restrictions are lifted I’m not sure if she will be able to go places on the bus with my dad anymore. He regularly no longer understands that she is his wife, and I fear he might abscond as physically he is still very able Sad
