How can they still say nothing?

So numbers today over 183,000. How can BoJo and his cronies still be making no statement? No clear guidance, nothing. I'm not wanting lockdown or anything but can't believe they're so quiet over all this.

I have faith in the powers that be that they will bring in stronger measures if they're really needed.

They've had no qualms about doing so previously, after all.

I've heard it's a bit cringe for Boris personally if he has to call for more measures, as he has so many of his own backbenchers voting against them.

But I'm sure if he really has to, then he will, as if things go more pear-shaped it'll reflect badly on him.

Tilltheend99 · 29/12/2021 21:04

It is quite weird. They claim they wanted to ‘save Christmas’ this year but I know at least two families that have missed Christmas due to catching Covid as it is now so rife.

It didn’t help pubs earn money either as people used their own common sense and stayed away so they could see their families.

If there were proper rules and social distancing in place then I think more people would have gone for a meal or drink out but when you know it will just be anti maskers everywhere it’s not worth it.

DaisyNGO · 29/12/2021 21:04

@ffscovid

More importantly, the hospital admission threshold has been breached Sad
So the official number admitted because of Covid has been breached, or general all cause admissions?
WonderfulYou · 29/12/2021 21:04

Why? Can you not work this out for yourself? Has the pandemic addled everyone's brains to the point that they need to be spoonfed the most basic of information?

Many people don’t use the internet to find their information.
I know lots of elderly people who read a newspaper still or watch the news.
The newspaper is there to sell and is probably scaremongering, so surely a leader could put everyone’s minds at rest.

How does it impact you if he sends a message of reassurance that will greatly improve several elderly peoples lives. You know you don’t have to watch it right?

Incognito22333 · 29/12/2021 21:04

France have similar numbers and more restrictions and vaccine mandates to enter venues. Doesn’t seem to make a blind bit of difference to case numbers.
People above a certain age need to be vaccinated x amount of times at y periods (x and y to be confirmed as it is still an experiment). That is where we are at.

ivykaty44 · 29/12/2021 21:05

Surely by now people can make their own decisions to keep themselves safe ?

public facing staff don't have that luxury in a public facing role

sst1234 · 29/12/2021 21:05

What do you want them to do? Sing an opera? What do you want them to say? Yes numbers are high, so what? It’s a mild flu like illness. That’s that.

ivykaty44 · 29/12/2021 21:08

Isn't BJ MIA still? Probs still trying to find him

whats the betting he's got or had omicron...

sst1234 · 29/12/2021 21:08

Oh well let’s sit back and watch this thread bring out the hysterical shrieking Covid obsessives. Honestly the problem is not respiratory so much as it is psychological, given how some people are behaving. What exactly do you want to happen?

If they're capable of reading a newspaper or watching the news then presumably they are capable of understanding that not everything they read or hear is accurately presented. If they need cossetting via a national broadcast to reassure them that things aren't as bad as the headlines suggest then maybe they should be staying away from media in general.
sst1234 · 29/12/2021 21:09

@HeronLanyon

At the very least I want to know why we are so out of step with other countries with lower numbers who have increased restrictions very recently. That would be a good start and kind of basic info you’d think a lot would want to know.
Do share some numbers on how those increased restrictions are helping?
hulahooper2 · 29/12/2021 21:12

One of my family had covid just now , it is not a hoax , ignore boris and please stay at home if you can

Who said it was a hoax? Why should we stay at home?

hamstersarse · 29/12/2021 21:14

People still think the government can actually control this?!?!
What do you want them to do? You’ve had lockdowns, vaccines, business closures, school closures….yet here we are.

I’ve got it at the moment. It’s not that bad. Annoying more than anything. Omicron is like getting a cold. I had a cold a month ago which was worse actually,

caringcarer · 29/12/2021 21:15

In January there were 34,000 in hospital. Today about 10,500. Hospitals are nowhere near to being breached. Deaths are 18. Last January so many deaths each day hundreds. We are in a far better place now than in January.

noblegiraffe · 29/12/2021 21:15

If they can't control it, then it would be nice to hear what they're going to do to mitigate the impact. How many extra supply teachers has the country got now to keep schools open thanks to their emergency call-out, for example?

hohohooooo · 29/12/2021 21:15

@lightisnotwhite lots of people do need to be told about social distancing. I was the sole
Passenger on a bus yesterday and another passenger got in and sat in the seat directly behind me. Why??!! This is just one example but it is not unusual. (I moved seats)

MarshaBradyo · 29/12/2021 21:16

Have a look at numbers 200k for France, getting high elsewhere

Are people calling for restrictions again?

I’m glad we’re holding so don’t need announcements

Do you really think the government can answer this better than you? People will be off a week, it’s not forever.
noblegiraffe · 29/12/2021 21:18

Do you really think the government can answer this better than you?

The government put a call-out for people to register as supply teachers to help keep schools open. Do you think that they should have a record of how many extra have signed up? I mean, if it's their big plan to keep schools open they should know, right?

HerculesMulligann · 29/12/2021 21:18

Meh. Case numbers really mean very little now. It’s a bit like focusing on the number of car journeys rather than the number of serious road traffic accidents and deaths.

noblegiraffe · 29/12/2021 21:19

People will be off a week, it’s not forever.

They have to test negative to be released after a week.

Agree- would the general public do a lockdown? Nope.... the China one has a few thousand cases and yet restrictions are rigorous.... we don’t get this.... as for the supply teachers not an attractive offer and getting a DBS is apparently slow.... if I was ask by two s schools I would cover teaching and the only reason is because they are covid safe as they can be...no where is safe.

Case numbers give an indication of how many hospitalisations we will have in 2-3 weeks' time.

But the hopsitalisation numbers are not great, either, anyway.
