How can they still say nothing?

So numbers today over 183,000. How can BoJo and his cronies still be making no statement? No clear guidance, nothing. I'm not wanting lockdown or anything but can't believe they're so quiet over all this.

I agree I don’t need any announcements atm

Lifeisnteasy · 29/12/2021 20:45

@rrhuth you were relaxing when the resident variant was more severe? Hmm

rwalker · 29/12/2021 20:46

@HeronLanyon

And no lateral flow or PCr tests where I am. Con Linda the feeling of utter leaderlessness.
People are unnecessarily using 3 and 4 test A DAY not surprising we run out.
HeronLanyon · 29/12/2021 20:47

Yes that is madness if for one person.

BellaChagall · 29/12/2021 20:47

I'm in London. In the last month I've known more people test positive than during the whole pandemic. Not one of them has anything other than mild symptoms. They are all either young or fully vaxxed.
Hospital admissions are not escalating out of control given the number of cases.
I feel really positive about this. I'm no fan of Johnson, but what do you want exactly?

LittleBearPad · 29/12/2021 20:47

@WonderfulYou

Not if we allow positive but mild or asymptomatic teachers to continue working.

But then they’ll spread it to the children - most of which haven’t been double vaccinated. And many of which have vulnerable family members.

Then we get to a point like in the beginning where parents don’t want to send their children in.

Children are already getting it in spades. Most barely know they have it.
LittleBearPad · 29/12/2021 20:48

Or wouldn’t know barring LFTs

Doris86 · 29/12/2021 20:48

@Guacamole001

They should stop daily cases reports and concentrate on hospital admissions and deaths instead.
Absolutely, and even hospital admission figures could be misleading. Evidence is showing that with Omicron, even those admitted to hospital are far less likely to need critical care than this with Delta.
me4real · 29/12/2021 20:50

I wonder how mny people have a cold. Omicron isn't much more severe.

Cases have peaked a while back in London so hopefully in a few weeks this'll be mostly behind us everywhere.

itsgettingweird · 29/12/2021 20:51

Not if we allow positive but mild or asymptomatic teachers to continue working

Problem potentially with this is them then spreading it around pupils who take it back home and into the community.

In the area I work (special education) this absolutely cannot happen. We've had pupils hospitalised and ventilated due to covid. One only survived because mum was offered a trial drug as nothing else worked. Although cannot deny they seem miracle drugs!

TequilaBlaze · 29/12/2021 20:51

I'm triple jabbed and refuse to live the rest of my life in fear. We are all going to get this illness at some point, there's no pretending otherwise, and life needs to go on. Stop lockdowns, stop restrictions.

SheikhMaraca · 29/12/2021 20:51

@SilverGlitterBaubles

They prefer to do nothing OP and let us argue it out amount ourselves turning the whole thing into a divisive situation pro or anti masks/ testing/ restrictions etc. because while we are busy arguing with each other we are not looking at what they are up to.
Or, they could be treating you like a grown up and expecting you to make your own decisions about you own life and your own family.
rrhuth · 29/12/2021 20:53
@rrhuth you were relaxing when the resident variant was more severe? Hmm
Omicron has made things worse, yes.

The main issue has always been the impact on health and other services. I am not personally in a high-risk group, but for those who are, that is a big concern.

MarshaBradyo · 29/12/2021 20:54

Agree with Sheikh

LalalalalalaLand123 · 29/12/2021 20:54

I totally agree with you OP. It's a fucking shambles.

SheikhMaraca · 29/12/2021 20:54

How does that work then? Particularly if
You work out the home

If you are capable of working out of the home on an average day, then omicron is literally no threat to you.

I’m tired of making sacrifices in an attempt to appease this ridiculous hysteria.

Nousernameforme · 29/12/2021 20:54

Covid is a non issue now is it not? What with omniicrom killing off delta and that being mild as long as you are vaccinated. I don't think there will be any need for more lockdowns places are reducing iso times surely we are nearly done with all this

Toasterandjam · 29/12/2021 20:55

Even if its mild, the problem is that infected NHS workers have to isolate and because of the large numbers of infection as its so contagious then has a knockon effect for hospitals. It will also affect paramedics etc etc. Its milder if you've been vaccinated and boosted apparently. Trying telling that to my friend who has it at the moment and is quite unwell with it.

Doris86 · 29/12/2021 20:55

@Hospedia

when Omicron is so infectious, case numbers do matter. There will be a knock on effect especially in the NHS.

180,000 cases a day is 1.26 million a week. Say if only 1% of those need medical intervention, that's 12,600 admissions a week. We have around 6000 critical care beds sonwould have to hope that most of these admissions do not need one.

Evidence is showing that people hospitalised with Omicron are far less likely to need critical care than those with Delta.
KCee30 · 29/12/2021 20:56

Because people have lost trust in Boris and the rest of them. Even if he did make an announcement, most people wouldn't care.

I do find the numbers worrying but at the same time, I've just had covid and it was very mild and short lived for me, Dp and dc.

The main concern for me is the stretch on the already struggling nhs. Even if the hospitalisation rates do not dramatically increase, there's shortages of staff due to many being off with covid!

My local hospital has tens of ambulances lined up most days!

It's sickening.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 29/12/2021 20:56

@Purplegurple

What do I want?? Leadership!! I work about the strain on the NHS, as the reports say the numbers of hospitalisations does appear to be on the increase. Deaths will be out of whack due to the bank holidays. I work that we're at these numbers now and should have been closed for a week and a half - what will happen when the kids go back? So all of these things won't let us go about life as some of you state. As a PP started, BJ came on the TV, announced we were in an emergency and had been MIA ever since! Surely it's not unreasonable to expect leadership during these times.
But what do you actually want him to DO? Everything is pointing to Omicron being milder, fewer hospitalisations, shorter hospital stays, fewer deaths - do you want Johnson to announce a lockdown to make you feel better and more in control?

@WonderfulYou

He should at least be updating people. Telling everyone that yes the cases have reached an all time high but there’s no need to panic etc etc. And yo remind people to continue to ventilate and wear masks etc.

Why? Can you not work this out for yourself? Has the pandemic addled everyone's brains to the point that they need to be spoonfed the most basic of information?

I wish to God they'd either reduce the daily stats to a weekly update (and keep it in the surveillance report so that people have to read it in context) OR start issuing other statistics alongside for context, such as death rates for all causes and comparable death rates in non-Covid years. We are so bloody fixated on daily Covid stats but there's nothing with which to compare them to understand what they actually mean.

KentuckyCriedFricken · 29/12/2021 20:56

And would you like him to say? What would you say in his position? After all, he’s just as human as you are with access to the same numbers.

Nothing he can say or do will stop a virus like this from spreading. Nothing. No one ever stopped colds or the flu from spreading. it can’t be done. Everyone knows what the situation is and people are responsible for their own decisions and actions. If 180,000+ positive test results s rated you, do what you feel you need to do. You’re an adult. You don’t need the government to tell you when it’s safe to cross the road, you look both ways and make your decision. So why are you waiting for BoJo to tell you what to do now?

Lifeisnteasy · 29/12/2021 20:56

We’ve been over this @rrhuth

The NHS is pooped every year anyway. It’s a bit like the boy who cried wolf, it’s always in a bad state so it’s impossible to tell how bad if that makes sense. I think privatisation is inevitable and I would be happy to pay for a better quality service because the NHS’s needs are dominating our lives and have done for years.

Like I said, unless CEV, let’s built up some immunity in case a nastier variant comes along, and take control of our own lives. Not all of us enjoy being cosseted by the state.

I disagree with much of what you say, but if we have been over it before (I didn't recognise your name) we will probably just waste time rehashing it!
HeronLanyon · 29/12/2021 20:59

At the very least I want to know why we are so out of step with other countries with lower numbers who have increased restrictions very recently. That would be a good start and kind of basic info you’d think a lot would want to know.
