How can they still say nothing?

So numbers today over 183,000. How can BoJo and his cronies still be making no statement? No clear guidance, nothing. I'm not wanting lockdown or anything but can't believe they're so quiet over all this.

@trappedsincesundaymorn it was 50,000 excess Winter Deaths.
That is a comparison between Winter and Summer mortality.
Figures are always higher in Winter and they admittedly got the Flu Vaccine wrong that year.

No but yyou stated let's play world cup of covid deaths.

Blubells · 30/12/2021 17:32

Year 13s have been seriously shafted.

So perhaps schools should prioritise year 13? Available teachers should concentrate on teaching that year group?

I agree that they need the chance to take exams as their GCSEs were already cancelled 😞

Leedsfan247 · 30/12/2021 17:33

He won’t close hospitality because they would need to pay furlough to staff and compensate businesses. The only reason they have reduced the self isolation time is because too many people are off especially in the NHS and transport sector. By ‘allowing people to use their own judgment’ he takes the responsibility away from the government

rrhuth · 30/12/2021 17:34

I think all of us who have lived through the repeat pattern of the UK government handling can see the mistakes that have been made. We can see high death numbers in many countries undoubtedly. I don't feel I know enough about political decision-making in e.g. Italy, Spain to read into them to the same extent as I do the UK.

One thing that has most frustrated me a lot here is the repeated attempts to impose a political timetable onto the virus.

I don't think Johnson is very good at dealing with live situations and the government has been so desperate to have 'done' Covid that it has not responded effectively as the course has changed. It is interesting to me that both Javid and Gove are considered very pro-measures in the cabinet, of course they are the two who get the most detailed info. Johnson is persistently indecisive himself, rather than steering. A decent PM would do more work to bring the cabinet together around an actual plan, not just a fake timetable.

Re Italy: It is the second-highest death toll in Europe after Britain and ninth-highest in the world.

But anyway a handful of countries with higher death rates than us doesn't make our extremely large number of deaths ok. No excuse or justification for eugenics lite let the bodies pile up policy.

And like I said, for good examples of how to mitigate in a pandemic (with consequently significantly lower numbers of deaths and Long Covid disabilities) look East. East Asia and some of the Arab countries.

Leedsfan247 · 30/12/2021 17:35

Until those people with the bug pass it on to someone older and / vulnerable and they die!

It’s not all about the individual it’s about considering others

trappedsincesundaymorn · 30/12/2021 17:38

ChequerBoard

So what is your actual point then?

Ok I'll spell it out for you. 700 excess deaths from covid is not ok, but 3000 excess deaths from something else isn't worth a mention because it seems that there is now some sort of hierarchy of death. Death from anything other than covid is acceptable no matter how high the numbers.

Lincslady53 · 30/12/2021 17:38

Difficult isn't it? My sister lives in France where they have much tighter restrictions than us. Covid passports to go to restaurants and bars, and yet they have 4x the death rate, and the highest number of new infections in Europe. It seems that Omicron is much weaker in vaccinated people, so I will still be cautious as I don't like being ill, but we have to try to get on with life the best we can.

ChequerBoard · 30/12/2021 17:39

No I bloody did not!!

Stop twisting words. Do you have reading comprehension issues?

Leedsfan247 · 30/12/2021 17:40

Try comparing winter 2020 and 21 with say 2015 when Covid 19 didn’t exist This is what it looks like. Data from The UK Health Foundation.

How can they still say nothing?
Tealightsandd · 30/12/2021 17:40
@Tealightsandd what policies are ‘eugenics lite’? Do you know what that means?
Lack of mitigation measures (including consistent and enforced mask mandate, vaccine passes, HEPA filters, etc) during a pandemic that is known to disproportionately kill the elderly and disabled (6 out of 10 killed by Covid were disabled) and poor. Aka to some as The Others.

MerryChristmas21 · 30/12/2021 17:42
@ChequerBoard are you sure they didn't all die of a broken leg and just happened to have covid as well?
Yep, those pesky broken legs!!

I despair with the deniers, I really do!

Northsoutheastwest76 · 30/12/2021 17:44

@Blubells I expect they try to. But if you have one teacher and a year 7 class and a year 13 class requiring a teacher what are they supposed to do.
Plus any random teacher can't teach year 13 if it isn't their subject.

Yes you did you had in a post let's play world cup of deaths , do you have memory issues.

In fact in France we still have fewer new cases per million people than the UK and half the number of deaths per million people. But I agree the vaccine passports aren't stopping transmission because vaccines don't stop transmission and it isn't the fault of the unvaccinated as without a negative test they can't access most indoors public areas.
Blubells · 30/12/2021 17:48

But if you have one teacher and a year 7 class and a year 13 class requiring a teacher what are they supposed to do.

Prioritise the year 13 class as they have A level exams in 5/6 months! And they missed half of year 12...

MarshaBradyo · 30/12/2021 17:49

I decried the poster who was trying the play World cup of deaths.

You are being ridiculous.

I was commenting on an incorrect statement.

Why, when this thread is full of talk on excess deaths, is that an issue?

Stick to the facts and don’t use hyperbole.

JohnHuffam1812 · 30/12/2021 17:49

The a levels will probably be cancelled.

Zeebrazebra · 30/12/2021 17:49

I am working in the community whilst I recover from long covid. We are inundated with cases to monitor ( all covid cases >65 yrs as well as all ECV and CV cases).
I also know that my normal place of work (hospital) is becoming extremely busy with covid patients now too. Had a text today begging folk to work extra. Both my colleagues in crit care and on the community (a special covid clinic) are worn down and exhausted. Staff are leaving in their droves. I can't understand why certain people are playing this down. How many people really want burnt out knackered docs and nurses looking after their loved ones even if those patients are old or vulnerable and close to death ? Minimise it all you want, claim it's nothing but a cold, but like it or not it is impacting health care right now.

MarshaBradyo · 30/12/2021 17:49

@JohnHuffam1812

The a levels will probably be cancelled.
Are you keen for this to happen?
Northsoutheastwest76 · 30/12/2021 17:51

Plus even if they sit exams they will be shafted as they never completed their GCSE course and their whole A Level period has been blighted by Teacher or student absence.
They are not reducing content and the Gvt have said that grade boundaries will be much stricter than the last two years.
They are screwed either way.
Not blaming schools or teachers BTW.

Mandyjack · 30/12/2021 17:52

What to you want them to say exactly? Most people are sick to death of hearing about covid
Infections are high yes but deaths and hospitalisations are low so the vaccine has done its job

Bagamoyo1 · 30/12/2021 17:53

@HighlandCowbag

I suspect the strain on the nhs is caused by the self isolation rules. Scrap them, testing and reporting anything except hospital admissions and let everyone get back to normal. Omicron is so transmissible lockdowns won't work. The issues are being caused by staff shortages for a cold.
