Here's hoping we'll get some answers tonight.

OP posts:
NotJustACigar · 19/12/2021 20:14

The booster starts to become effective in just a few days they're saying now www.independent.co.uk/news/science/covid-booster-omicron-vaccine-latest-b1977582.html

the80sweregreat · 19/12/2021 20:14

Yep, the daily mail website will ' do your head in' as they say. !
They contradict each other all the time , one article is bad , the other one isn't that bad . It is mind blowing !

EmergencyHydrangea · 19/12/2021 20:15

The Mail is notoriously bad at science reporting.

the80sweregreat · 19/12/2021 20:17

The Mail will have two conflicting articles back to back , it's up , it's down , etc
Then the comments page will tell everyone the are mad to get a vaccine and to stop the restrictions!! It is a mad website indeed !!

herecomesthsun · 19/12/2021 20:28

The problem is that we don't have the full facts about omicron and it could go either way.

It could effectively be milder, especially as there is some immunity in the community and we have some treatments now for the most vulnerable. That's just possible.

Or the rise in cases caused by the increased transmissibility could outweigh that and we could see a big rise in hospitalisations.

It's a big problem that we don't exactly know.

The CMO has said this week that "Omicron is a very serious threat" and "what we know is bad", so he is working with that presumption.

Surely that’s a deliberate tactic on their part? If you confuse people enough they tend to switch off from the message which is most likely why the DM publish conflicting stories, you never actually know what’s happening so every headline you click to read.

Then again the DM readership is a special demographic…

We don’t know yet full information

Although DM probably does make confusion worse as they prefer a rollercoaster for readership

Chris Whitty here explaining why he is concerned about omicron

@the80sweregreat

Thanks!! I've had the jabs Was just wondering why the push for boosters if it takes ages to ' kick in ' so to speak But I know why i need it and can't wait to get it over with !!
Because the sooner you have a booster, the sooner you are protected. It’s not about saving Christmas, it’s about saving pressure on hospital beds, and lives.
Mydogmylife · 19/12/2021 20:59

@Nat6999

Something is afoot in Scotland at least, ds was due to visit Edinburgh on Tuesday with a friend & they got notified today that they could either get a refund or vouchers for their train tickets. Thankfully they have chosen to postpone their trip until probably Easter next year.
This may be as many trains up here have had to be cancelled, not enough staff to run them due to with either actual covid or in isolation
EmKayEm · 19/12/2021 21:12

The shagging idiot has really fucked the dog on this one.

First lockdown, everyone I know was pretty much up for it, observed the rules etc.

Last Christmas was pretty much the same.

Now, I would say 80% are just going to ignore what they can.
This includes NHS workers and several other emergency service workers.
'Enough is is enough' seems to be the over-whelming opinion, and no amount of arguing is cutting through, because of the government doing exactly the opposite all the way through the entire pandemic.

If there is no compliance, and a lot of death, the blood is squarely on the hands of Johnson and his crooked crew.

herecomesthsun · 19/12/2021 21:14

There would be quite a lot of compliance though not universal.

paranoidnamechanger · 19/12/2021 21:17

It’s all token gestures, this imminent circuit break. They know they can do fuck all about people mixing indoors. And we know it.

So by your (ahem) logic, because the government do exactly the opposite of what they should be doing that means everyone else should do the same but then blame the deaths that would result from mass disobedience on the government, just because? Surely the whole country isn’t as stupid as BJ and chums?

I think 80% would follow the rules, the other 20% probably weren’t following them the first time round anyway.

neveradullmoment99 · 19/12/2021 21:58

Just read that neither Boris nor Rishi sunak was at this meeting. I mean fgs!

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 19/12/2021 22:05

Yes I’ve seen that too. Wonder if he was at a Christmas party instead ..

Leftbutcameback · 19/12/2021 22:12

I’m interested in the link @NotJustACigar shared. I had covid which I think I caught about 7 days after my booster and it was very mild. I’m CEV so was worried but assumed the booster had kicked in which helped. I managed not to share it with any close contacts either. In amongst all the crap, the vaccine continues to be the good news.

Blossomtoes · 19/12/2021 22:14

I think 80% would follow the rules, the other 20% probably weren’t following them the first time round anyway.

I disagree. A lot of people who assiduously complied in the past are now saying they’re done. Another lockdown would essentially make a complete nonsense of vaccination. If we’re no better off than we were this time last year, why did we bother?

Smallkeys · 19/12/2021 22:16

Boris is a muppet , nearly died of COVID if we believe that has 2 lots of paternity leave and swans about going to various party’s while his cohorts snog their aides and test their eyesight with a family drive. All while the world is in complete bloody disarray. He is a massive knob of the highest order.

bellamountain · 19/12/2021 22:22

@Blossomtoes I agree. I fear if the government go too heavy on restrictions or lockdown, many people will think what's the point and not bother with a vaccine if it doesn't buy them freedom after all.

I agree, 80% would be higher than I’d guess.

Maybe 80% wouldn’t have big parties etc, but I think more than 20% would do a Christmas Day with a couple of households.

TheHOHOHOnlyMrsM · 19/12/2021 22:24

@AnyName1

Covid or the queen
It's public information promoting boosters and so on, as I understand it - ie nothing we don't already know!
ChristmasPlanning · 19/12/2021 22:48

@TheHOHOHOnlyMrsM

No, no, no. Not a COBRA meeting, a CONGA meeting.

the80sweregreat · 19/12/2021 23:02

Cheese makers should make a ' cobra ' version of cheddar or a 'number ten ' special.
They might make a few bob.

pigsinblanketsrule · 20/12/2021 07:44

I think they just need to get on with it, there’s lots of noise from the backbenchers today, vote garnering noise.

But the fact is that this needs to be science led, not politics led.

Look at the European countries already taking decisive action, meanwhile we are not.

We need a bit of proper leadership not bumbling in the next day or two.
