Here's hoping we'll get some answers tonight.

@PussyCatEatingPigsInBlankets

Red It's still a bit odd to do it on a Sunday evening. Why not Friday afternoon or Monday morning? They seem to operate on a different planet from most of us. 🤷‍♀️ resigned sigh
They're partying on the other days, Sunday's their chilling day.
MamDancer · 19/12/2021 17:22

@RedToothBrush

Andrew Ducker *@andrewducker* Something is afoot.
Interesting! that announcement was on the 17th Dec though
Tealightsandd · 19/12/2021 17:23

@the80sweregreat

Boris Johnson looked wrecked on Friday at that vaccine clinic , two very young children a young wife , he lost his mum earlier this year and covid just throws up problems after problem after problem. The tories lost a by election this week , lord frost has resigned , 100 MPs rebelled against him and he knows the knifes are out I'm not a fan of his at all or a tory , but honestly the stress must be so immense. He probably has long covid as well.
The 100 'rebels'. They're a large part of why things have got so bad. Again.

Refusing mitigating measures - basic ones that other countries have had in place for months. And before anyone starts, yes, other countries are also still struggling with Covid (some more than others) but not as badly as us. Because proactive mitigation makes a difference and it all helps.

Even worse, refusing the basic infection control mitigations possibly for political reasons. For these rebels (who don't mind voter ID cards, it's just vaccine passes they seem to have issue with) the severe public health and economic crisis isn't as important as their game of thrones manoeuvres.

Right now public health and economy (interlinked) should come before politics.

Tealightsandd · 19/12/2021 17:24

Keir Starmer showed the signs of a strong leader the other day btw. I've seen comments suggesting he should've used the opportunity to bring the government down - by voting against the (better late than never) mild mitigations. But he didn't. Because he did the right thing for the country.

He put public health and the economy before politics.

That is admirable leadership.

@the80sweregreat

I totally get the Boris Johnson hate, but honestly I don't know anyone who has had a few years like he has had. I don't feel sorry for him , but how one person can take on all that and still be standing is amazing! It's true he wanted this job , be careful what you wish for in life eh ? It is a morality tale and a cautionary one Anyway, let's see what next week brings. Let's hope the figures go down enough to ward off a lockdown.
Thing is, he looks like shit since he came out of hospital with COVID. No-one would have blamed him for standing down due to health reasons. But I guess he was too arrogant to do that. Either that or he's getting a great deal of money to stay on to send out the message that COVID doesn't do long term damage and you can carry on with your job as normal......
Jourdain11 · 19/12/2021 17:26

That's going to be about nothing. It will say, "get your booster" or something. No way they'd make a national restrictions announcement via newspapers.

Moonopoly · 19/12/2021 17:29

@Jourdain11 Exactly that. It’ll be get your booster. Wash your hands. Keep the window open etc

the80sweregreat · 19/12/2021 17:29

Yes, it'll be about the boosters
Plus not many people buy newspapers now do they ? It's mostly all online etc..

RedToothBrush · 19/12/2021 17:30

It could well be about boosters.

Its highly unusual either way.

RedToothBrush · 19/12/2021 17:31

@the80sweregreat

Isn't even the act of doing this, newsworthy though?
Malibuismysecrethome · 19/12/2021 17:32

Boris hasn’t had a worse time than any other citizen. Babies have been born and loved ones lost, people have had Covid he’s not suffered anymore than anyone else. People have had loved ones terminally ill during this epidemic and have been unable to comfort them in hospital.

Rollergirl11 · 19/12/2021 17:32

DH works for one of the big media owners. He says the government cover wrap will be to do with the booster program drive and not any kind of special announcement. The wrap has been arranged for some time.

Oh, wtf is that?

@RedToothBrush

Its highly unusual either way.

It’s not highly unusual.
WaterBottle123 · 19/12/2021 17:38

@Rollergirl11

Ah sorry but was just scrolling this thread for 'my important DH says' post Grin

CurlyhairedAssassin · 19/12/2021 17:38

Yes, but they're not trying to run the country at the same time.

Look, I'm no fan of Boris. I'm not trying to say we should sympathise because he's been unwell with COVID and has a pressurised job. I'm simply suggesting that he should do one. Grin

the80sweregreat · 19/12/2021 17:38

I lost my elderly much loved dad to covid in 2020 and couldn't see him at the end of his life.
I'm was just pointing out how much our PM has had the last few years that's all.I know it's been even more shit for others too of course :(
Been a rotten few years all round :(

PartyPrawnRingGames · 19/12/2021 17:42

I feel a bit sorry for Bojo if he has to stand up there and announce an Xmas lockdown, no one wants that job.

WoodenReindeer · 19/12/2021 17:42

What's a wrap and whats a cover wrap?

WoodenReindeer · 19/12/2021 17:43

Anyone remember spooks where the world would be saved and at the end you'd see a news announcement, carefully timed, about q "gas leak" or similar. I'd so love to see the behind the scenes of the covid media !

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 19/12/2021 17:52

And if it's all that urgent, surely this meeting would have been a breakfast meeting, not meet at 5pm for the party that they aren't having and then issuing the announcement, or in Bojo's case, waffling it, at God knows when. So disorganised.

Fridafever · 19/12/2021 17:53

What's a wrap and whats a cover wrap?

It’s when there’s an advert over the cover of a publication. I don’t quite understand the significance here. Maybe the government taking ads out?

As an aside I with there were a few women with important secret announcements from their own jobs. Sick of hearing about important (but loose lipped) DH’s. fgrin

TerraNovaTwo · 19/12/2021 17:54

Poppycock. BJ put himself willingly in this position. He's a womanising twat to boot. Stop making excuses for him. He's an arsehole.

the80sweregreat · 19/12/2021 17:55

Yes, where are the women with the top jobs in media or the government or in the security services etc who can tell us things on here ? There must be loads of them out there. Maybe just too busy for mumsnet !!
