Here's hoping we'll get some answers tonight.

Red It's still a bit odd to do it on a Sunday evening. Why not Friday afternoon or Monday morning? They seem to operate on a different planet from most of us. 🤷‍♀️ resigned sigh
You think it's odd that in the middle of a crisis they have a meeting at the weekend?

Surely it would be odder to only work on week days.

the80sweregreat · 19/12/2021 16:40

Boris Johnson looked wrecked on Friday at that vaccine clinic , two very young children a young wife , he lost his mum earlier this year and covid just throws up problems after problem after problem.
The tories lost a by election this week , lord frost has resigned , 100 MPs rebelled against him and he knows the knifes are out
I'm not a fan of his at all or a tory , but honestly the stress must be so immense.
He probably has long covid as well.

reesewithoutaspoon · 19/12/2021 16:40

Last time we locked down it was because London cases were high, yet in the North west they were low. once London had flattened the curve they lifted restrictions, but we were 2 to 3 weeks behind on our peak and it ripped through the north.

The review was always due over this weekend. So why not Sunday 5pm?

5pm Sunday is good for missing the leaks and gossip of the Sunday Papers. It means it probably will miss the Monday press run (on Sunday night) too.

It then means they maximise civil service time in the week before Christmas for anything that needs to be done, as they are ready to start rolling out plans first thing Monday.

Its actually not a crazy time, in terms politicians schedules over crisis management.

I don't think it hugely weird tbh.

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 19/12/2021 16:44

@IcedPurple

Wasn't this already planned a few days ago?
I thought so. There was a list of other meetings happening throughout the week and COBR were on that list.

Monday or Tuesday afternoon podium talk seems more likely depending on weekend number corrections.

Good. He has done absolute horrors to other people over and over again. In my opinion , he wanted to be able to say he had been PM rather than doing the actual work. Now he has had to lead and he cannot do it. I'm glad to see him looking like he actually is doing hard work
MrsSanteClaws · 19/12/2021 16:46

It was reported yesterday that Boris had called a COBRA meeting this weekend. Nicola Sturgeon also made reference to a COBRA meeting being called for the weekend last week.

the80sweregreat · 19/12/2021 16:52

I totally get the Boris Johnson hate, but honestly I don't know anyone who has had a few years like he has had.
I don't feel sorry for him , but how one person can take on all that and still be standing is amazing!
It's true he wanted this job , be careful what you wish for in life eh ? It is a morality tale and a cautionary one
Anyway, let's see what next week brings.
Let's hope the figures go down enough to ward off a lockdown.

borntobequiet · 19/12/2021 16:57

@DGRossetti

Of course "Cobra Meeting" is an anagram of agent microbe
Woooo

eightmaidsamilking · 19/12/2021 16:59

Nicola is usually the first to announce isn't she? Hopefully they won't keep us in suspense for too long.

This! Where is it?
Monkeymilkshake · 19/12/2021 17:05

But arent hospital numbers and deaths “late”?
As in people who cought covid 3 weeks ago ish are in hospital now?
So in 3 weeks time, hospital admission might start to increase and the NHS wont cope. So a lockdown would slow down the spread and therefore reduce the number of people needing hospital treatment all at once.
I dont know, i’m not a pandemic specialist or anything!

MorningStarling · 19/12/2021 17:06

Is it a briefing or a COBRA meeting? If the latter it's not going to be on the telly.

Bubblty · 19/12/2021 17:06

What announcement?

There isn't an announcement, unless they aren't telling anyone about it, this thread is about what appears to be a routine meeting.
the80sweregreat · 19/12/2021 17:09

I put Nicola S on par with Profs Chris Whitty , Patrick Valence and JVT , she would probably have lock down in Scotland by now ( if she could ) they are very bleak about this new variant and concerned for the NHS and the public.
People like Sajid Javid and a few in the government are not as keen on further restrictions etc and obviously ham strung by the right and their chancellor and money woes and all sorts. Boris Johnson is worried about his own position which is hanging by a thread now till new year too.
In the meantime the general public haven't a clue what to do for the best :( apart from the usual masks and socially distance etc
The figures must be a nightmare to decipher too
especially as Omnicron is a new variant compared to Alpha and Delta.
It is depressing

Nope. We locked down far too late for London. Each time. Lockdown happened in an attempt to stop it getting as bad everywhere else.

I thought the PM isn't even going to be at this meeting?

If so, it seems unlikely there will be any 'announcement'.

Parker231 · 19/12/2021 17:14

Has been announced that Boris isn’t at the meeting. It is being chaired by a member of the Cabinet Office.

RedToothBrush · 19/12/2021 17:17

Andrew Ducker @andrewducker
Something is afoot.

Cobra meeting at 17:00
RedRobinRedbreast · 19/12/2021 17:20

Ooh wonder what that's all about then!

the80sweregreat · 19/12/2021 17:20

The Corbyn room.
Instead of expensive designer wallpaper it would have B and Q off cuts and maybe a framed headline of the ' socialist worker ' in a cheap frame.
At least nobody would be asking him about how much his decor cost !
Hmm , Someone on another thread mentioned the 20th as being important..
they were flamed
What is afoot ?
