My Christmas is cancelled

228 replies

TooTiredForThis2 · 19/12/2021 01:45

My husband tested positive.

I cant tell you how much I needed this Christmas. The one time of the year where all of my family and family friends make eachother a priority so that we are together. I hate this. We cant get an online shop because slots are full, and we don't own a car.

even if i never usually online shopped

DumplingsAndStew · 19/12/2021 11:02

@Bigfathairyones

Just checking - you only need to SI too, if you haven't had 2 COVID jabs. 7 days of LFTs instead now....rules changed a few days ago, but if you're fully jabbed, you haven't had to SI for a while now.
Where has the OP said where she lives??
DumplingsAndStew · 19/12/2021 11:02

@oftenbaffled

if no one in my household drove i think i would have been the first in line to get a food delivery slot given... the situation!q2wer
Good for you. That doesn't mean everyone has to shop the same way.
ffscovid · 19/12/2021 11:05

@TooTiredForThis2

Thanks for the ideas. I will look into these. We are not in an area that amazon does their food deliveries for but I can try to look for other options. Thank you
Ask on your local Facebook page. The kindness of others will surprise you. I know that if anyone was in a similar situation here, half the village would offer to pick up shopping, even if the requester wasn't personally known to them.
oftenbaffled · 19/12/2021 11:21

Yes but it then avoids the scenario of the OP exclaiming 'Christmas is ruined'!!

oftenbaffled · 19/12/2021 11:23

if you knew your christmas was going to be 'ruined' if you couldn't get to the shops because neither drove

All i am saying is - it would have been sensible to hedge your bets and get an online slot

gogohm · 19/12/2021 11:26

If you aren't positive you can go to the shops, grab a taxi home or make 2-3 trips perhaps? Or do what I did before I drove, took the pushchair and used the baby carrier on the way back/made them walk once older

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 19/12/2021 11:30

Ours is ruined too
My son tested positive so we can't go to my parents as planned
We have no food in as we'd planned to go away. We don't even have any decorations up

The rest of us are all PCR negative and all the adults are double jabbed and boosted therefore we are allowed to go out as long as we do daily LFTs. I am going to do a food shop and a trip to the garden centre for a tree for the sake of the kids who are devastated at missing out on Christmas with their cousins and wider family.

I hope no-one will judge me for that. I'll be masked and will scrupulously distance and sanitise.
Will just have to regroup and make a plan B but ruined is an accurate description of the way I feel. It's like last year all over again.

Maybe ask one of your friends/family to go and get some supplies for you?

I haven't read the full thread but look at Deliveroo and Uber Eats as they do some grocery shopping.

Blueuggboots · 19/12/2021 11:34

Check after 6pm on all the shopping sites.

I’m just thinking the same thing. If you and your family make each other a priority then ask them for help if you need it. That’s what Christmas is really about. All the best and hope your husband feels better soon.

Squeezita · 19/12/2021 11:35

Do Deliveroo and Uber Eats deliver turkeys? Confused

Russelhobskettle · 19/12/2021 11:42

Tootired hasn't mentioned yet if she's vaccinated, but if she is then all she needs to do is take and LFT and if negative go shopping as she would have already planned to do. People are also taking the time to check and have found more than one supplier that still has delivery slots. So this is hardly a situation that means they will starve.

Iwonder08 · 19/12/2021 11:49

What is the drama? You haven't mentioned you are ill so I assume you are not. Get a taxi to the nearest supermarket if you can't drive.

3luckystars · 19/12/2021 11:49

Like you would have to have done anyway.

TooTiredForThis2 · 19/12/2021 13:26

I'm not LFT positive, but I do have symptoms so I have to isolate pending PCR test. Husband is feeling v poorly.

@Mybalconyiscracking - sorry that's bad advice, please don't suggest that people who are testing positive go to the shops even if late in the evening! If people do that then no wonder cases are through the roof.

@meadowblossom I am sorry for your loss. That is dreadful and I'm truly sad for you. Though, as @thaegumathteth says, I'm still allowed to feel sad that I can't see my family, even if others like yourself do have it worse. I've been mentally unwell all year and this was something to be excited about. For me this is really gutting. But I do appreciate what you are trying to say and some people may be comforted by "it could be worse". It may be true, but personally it doesn't lessen my sadness unfortunately.

We were getting a train to our families house this week. So all the food for all the family was being delivered to their house several hours away. I had planned to go shopping to grab a small food shop for the next couple of days before we were due to travel. But now I have symptoms so need to wait for PCR test and so that's what the problem is.

She also hasn't mentioned where she lives. Not all places have the same rules.

oftenbaffled · 19/12/2021 13:42

Do you have children OP?

TooTiredForThis2 · 19/12/2021 13:55

@oftenbaffled

If you have children, FGS do not talk about christmas being cancelled. In fact even if you don't have children, stop talking about christmas being cancelled! Make the best of it

Although baffled that neither of you drive, and yet you hadn't booked an online slot

Well I usually get the bus there and a taxi home, as the supermarket is a 45 min walk away and I am disabled. And we were only going to be at our home for a few more days before travelling to see family, so that's why we didn't have any food shop orders in place.

TooTiredForThis2 · 19/12/2021 13:58

@oftenbaffled

Do you have children OP?
No, we don't have any children.

Christmas for us is about spending time with all of our extended family so quite understandably I'm upset that we have had to cancel plans. It will be the first Christmas in my 30 years of life that I haven't been with all of my family and so I'm pretty grumpy.

Of course we will be making the most of it, especially if we can arrange some kind of food delivery so we can stuff our faces to eat our sadness. We will still try to have a nice day together but I am gutted we can't see anyone and will be on our own.

Helpstopthepain · 19/12/2021 14:01

Where do you live? Maybe we could help? I wouldn’t mind doing a shop for you

TooTiredForThis2 · 19/12/2021 14:04

To everyone who has provided advice and suggestions, thank you. We live in a rural area, no click&collect slots, no online shopping slots, no amazon prime food deliveries. There is one uber eats grocery thing for the local off license... so I suppose at least we can buy some gin and tonic!

I have checked Gousto and Hellofresh. If I can't get a food shop slot today, then we will go with that. Hf have some lunch options but no fruit/veg but it will be better than no food of course. I have posted local fb and am waiting for it to be approved but lots of people on there live in the nearest town so may not be close by. But I am hoping someone will be able to help. I will keep checking every 30 mins for food shop slots!

This is so ridiculous, do the people saying “if you don’t drive how would you get shopping if you don’t get it online” realise buses and taxis exist! I don’t drive and rarely get an online shop, I go shopping and bring it home on the bus! It’s not hard to understand is it?! Like you can only do shopping if you have a car 😂 online shopping is a relatively new thing my mum had 6 of us and never drove yet managed to get shopping home by walking/ bus/ taxi 🤦🏻🤦🏻
