My Christmas is cancelled

My husband tested positive.

I cant tell you how much I needed this Christmas. The one time of the year where all of my family and family friends make eachother a priority so that we are together. I hate this. We cant get an online shop because slots are full, and we don't own a car.

@oftenbaffled

Yes but it then avoids the scenario of the OP exclaiming 'Christmas is ruined'!!
Gosh my thread has really got to you hasn't it? Lots of sarcy comments about how unorganised I am and how baffled you are... perhaps if it wasn't for people unnecessarily booking online deliveries just because they might need it, I wouldn't be having so much difficulty getting a slot.

@RedCandyApple

This is so ridiculous, do the people saying “if you don’t drive how would you get shopping if you don’t get it online” realise buses and taxis exist! I don’t drive and rarely get an online shop, I go shopping and bring it home on the bus! It’s not hard to understand is it?! Like you can only do shopping if you have a car 😂 online shopping is a relatively new thing my mum had 6 of us and never drove yet managed to get shopping home by walking/ bus/ taxi 🤦🏻🤦🏻
Thank you! I didn't realise how baffled some people would be about how a household without a car can get a food shop. Public transport, folks!

If you do a click and.collect, taxi will fetch the order for you

UntamedShrew · 19/12/2021 14:59

I’m so sorry. We are in a rubbish situation too and cancelling our plans but we have food here at least. In fact too much as we were due to host :( Ugh. I think you should have a massive party in the summer next year. We all should!

oftenbaffled · 19/12/2021 15:43

Sounds tough OP
But…. Make the best of it
No more “Christmas is ruined” for starters! Focus on the positives - save money, make it cosy and have it all to look forward to re getting together with family in the new year

Strictlyfanoftenyears · 19/12/2021 18:55

So you are disabled, live in a rural area, dont drive and have no friends or relatives nearby. Doesnt that worry you? At least you have the internet I suppose............ Hopefully you will get help from the Facebook group (ours have been amazing).

luverlybubberly · 19/12/2021 18:56

My local taxi firm will pick up a click and collect for people self isolating

FallonCarringtonWannabe · 19/12/2021 18:59

@Carriemac

Also public service announcement Building a framework of local friends should be a priority for everyone. I had a migraine within weeks of moving to a new area and couldn’t pick up dcs from school. I phoned my 2hours away mum in a panic and she said, ‘you have to make local friends!’ At the time I was hmm as I wanted immediate help but that’s the best advice ever.

could'nt agree more. you reap what you sow.

You reap what you sow? Did you mean to be so rude? Hmm

Put an ad up on Airtasker for someome to buy xyz and drop it off. Or local Facebook page. Just Eat. Uber Eats. Deliveroo. Co-op. Click and collect. Iceland. Neighbour. NextDoor.
Apart from Click and Collect, none of these things exist in my area, Co-op and Iceland don't deliver - the nearest Iceland is about 7 miles away. I've never even heard of airtasker. I don't live in the sticks, a medium sized town about 10 miles from a large city.
Normando91 · 19/12/2021 19:15

Hope you’ve managed to find a solution OP!

If not, have everything you need added to your shopping basket on each supermarkets app… pain in the arse I know. And then keep checking back constantly! Means if one does become available you can check out immediately so as not to lose it.
I needed a home delivery for tomorrow, also isolating, but there were none at all! Kept checking back and managed to get one- albeit for 7 quid!!! So it is possible one might pop up at some point!

phishy · 19/12/2021 21:55

You are allowed to go out and buy food, OP.

You are -ive and food is a basic requirement,

hayley013 · 19/12/2021 22:08

My daughters just tested positive tonight on lateral flow, just heartbroken, first Christmas with family in years

Choccymumma · 19/12/2021 22:57

OP, we can get a morrissons shop through our Amazon account, sometimes same day! Have a look there.

Yesterday I discovered how to get a slot!

Same as you, I tried every online supermarket and there are no slots till January.

Then I made a discovery! If you sign up for a month free trial of Amazon Prime you can order Morrisons groceries via Amazon. £40 min order and free delivery.

I ordered mine Saturday and it came next day. It all arrived in thick brown Kraft paper bags, delivery to doorstep only.

You cannot get everything that is in the shop but it would be enough to see you over Xmas.

For meat, ring your local butcher and they would be happy to deliver to your door.

CommanderBurnham · 20/12/2021 00:47

I'd phone the off licence and see if they can get some groceries to you too if you put in an order. They obviously have the delivery service and won't have to pay Uber fees.

TooTiredForThis2 · 20/12/2021 03:27

@Maskless - glad you managed to get a slot on amazon. Lots of people have suggested that already but the "amazon fresh" thing doesn't exist for my area so we can't get one on there unfortunately (thanks anyway to you and @choccymumma).

Thank you but i can't because as mentioned previously I am now also feeling unwell and awaiting a PCR test.

Gov says "You should self-isolate immediately if you show any symptoms of COVID-19 and book a PCR test as soon as possible, even if you are fully vaccinated."

Yes, of course it worries me. It's shit! But it's not something with a quick fix, nor is it easy for me to try and make friends - because of crippling anxiety. Yes I am getting help for that but it's slow going.

Have you tried Morrisons via Amazon Prime too?
It's different to Amazon fresh and often the two are available in different areas.

oftenbaffled · 20/12/2021 09:38

I didn't realise how baffled some people would be about how a household without a car can get a food shop. Public transport, folks!

i think why some of us are baffled is that you are disabled, no friends or family local, suffer from crippling anxiety AND don't drive. It wasn't just the no driving

So yes - some of us were baffled as to how you got food without online shopping

3luckystars · 20/12/2021 10:30

Do you think you could move closer to your family again? Would that be an option for you or is it a definite no.

Erm, lots of people’s circumstances are very different to each other’s. Your username is very apt!

OP, I’m so sorry to hear about your situation.

Could you try posting on a local Facebook page? Someone might be able to recommend delivery services for people isolating.

If supermarket click and collect slots are booked up, you could contact local shops and ask to prepay for shopping to be picked up by Uber/ taxi

TooTiredForThis2 · 20/12/2021 14:54

I managed to secure a food shop delivery from ocado. Expensive but that's OK. I appreciate everyone's suggestions.

Also, thanks @oftenbaffled for making me feel even more of a failure for how bad my situation is 🙃 I manage. I go out to work (in a bus or taxi or carpool). I go out to go food shopping (in a bus or a taxi). I see my existing friends by travelling on trains to see them when able. It really isn't that difficult to imagine how usually my life is fine and comfortable and we manage just fine, but when I'm isolated in a house for 10 days at Christmas it can be challenging... You should consider yourself extremely lucky if being isolated for 10 days wouldn't provide you with any challenges.

OP posts:
Beebababadabo · 20/12/2021 15:04

If your husband is positive and you are negative you could go out. You have to test everyday for 7 days if you get no symptoms and provided you are negative you don't have to isolate. So you could get a shop in? Maybe Iceland who deliver in shop or get a taxi. I'm covid positive but all my household are still testing negative. My husband is shopping tonight. He and the kids will start testing every day.
