My Christmas is cancelled

TooTiredForThis2 · 19/12/2021 01:45

My husband tested positive.

I cant tell you how much I needed this Christmas. The one time of the year where all of my family and family friends make eachother a priority so that we are together. I hate this. We cant get an online shop because slots are full, and we don't own a car.

We are in the same position. It sucks Sad

Uninterested · 19/12/2021 09:22

@JustJustWhy

Go on a local Facebook page or Nextdoor site for your area. If you ask for help I guarantee people will get your shopping for you if they can.
I agree. People will be happy to help.
anon12345anon · 19/12/2021 09:24

@PixiKitKat

I only know my neighbours to say hello to them but if they knocked on my door and explained they have covid and could we pick up a click and collect order for them then of course I would. Granted for me it would be a 15 min job as Tesco's is close by but even if it wasn't so close I'd still help!
Me too!

No harm in asking......I genuinely wouldn't mind doing this for a friend, neighbour, etc...

Fingers crossed you get it sorted and have a lovely Xmas x

PepeSilviaDoesNotExist · 19/12/2021 09:29

If you have your shop ready online often a few delivery slots come available in the hour before the cut off as people cancel or change their deliveries. Not sure if it’s as easy at Christmas.

I do this regularly if I forget to book my shop.

Erictheavocado · 19/12/2021 09:33

Sorry if this has been mentioned, but do Tesco do their Whoosh delivery in your area? It is only supposed to be for basics I believe, but might get you through Christmas even if it's unexciting. Otherwise, are their any lo all independent shops that might deliver?

5thHelena · 19/12/2021 09:33

Definitely put a post up on your local Facebook group. I've seen a couple like this and it's amazing how many and how quickly complete strangers will rally round. It's where covid tends to show the true goodness of people. Please give it a go. Good luck 🤞

StormzyinaTCup · 19/12/2021 09:36

I'd definitely put something on Nextdoor, I'm usually a bit meh about our local forum but it has come up trumps during COVID. I know I can update my Sainsburys order until 11pm on 22nd Dec so if you put a shout out then a neighbour might be happy to add a few bits to their trolley for you if you are able to drop some money into them.

Yesthatscorrect · 19/12/2021 09:40

@oftenbaffled

If you have children, FGS do not talk about christmas being cancelled. In fact even if you don't have children, stop talking about christmas being cancelled! Make the best of it

Although baffled that neither of you drive, and yet you hadn't booked an online slot

I often see people who don't drive getting into taxis outside the supermarket. Maybe that was the OP's plan to get the Christmas food.
Magicpaintbrush · 19/12/2021 09:44

Sorry if amybody has mentioned already as I haven't rtft, but it looks like Morrisons are doing a special food delivery service for those who are self isolating or shielding - here's a link to the page: my.morrisons.com/doorstep-deliveries/

Ted27 · 19/12/2021 09:53

@oftenbaffled

I don't drive, I've never had an online food delivery, I walk, get the bus or a taxi depending on how much I've got.

Its really not that baffling

Usecoooomonsnse · 19/12/2021 09:55

@TooTiredForThis2 sorry you are in this situation

where do you live ? Do you have Nextdoor ? Post it there or here even ? Mumsnet collective Halohave attended weddings and found rings on the streets, someone might be able to help.

Hope you are able to get through this !
Best wishes

Ocado were advertising slots the other day. I had cancelled my Xmas one a few weeks ago as our plans had changed - I am clearly not the only one. They do charge £9-99 for a minimum £90 order.

Xenia · 19/12/2021 10:08

Shades I don't think it helps to give the reasons. People's views are very entrenched on both sides. I have had just about every jab going other than this one. I even paid £400 so the twins could have the BCG as teenagers.

I am still trying to get to the bottom of what the law is though... that is a fact finding neutral issue on which we can all unite - that the law should be clear.
lordslibrary.parliament.uk/covid-19-motions-to-approve-statutory-instruments-relating-to-public-health/

"Daily rapid testing for contacts of Covid-19 cases

From 14 December 2021, the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (Self-Isolation) (England) (Amendment) (No. 6) Regulations 2021 (the self-isolation (No. 6) regulations) would remove the legal duty for contacts of suspected or confirmed Omicron cases to self-isolate.

This would amend an earlier instrument that came into force on 30 November 2021 and required all close contacts of suspected or confirmed Omicron cases to self-isolate for 10 days, regardless of their age or vaccination status.

In the explanatory memorandum to the self-isolation (No. 6) regulations, the Government said that contacts will instead be strongly advised to take a daily lateral flow test for seven days. If the results are negative, individuals are advised to remain cautious such as reducing social contact and avoiding large gatherings.

The Government laid the instrument on 13 December 2021. The regulations are scheduled to expire at the end of 24 March 2022."

Even that summary is not true as the ability not to isolate does not apply to me (the unvaccinated). However it does suggest those who have been vaccinated are not obliged by law to take the lateral flows, just advised to do so.

It would be very helpful if one page online from the state set out in simple sentences the law even if it then had a footnote to every sentence setting out in which set of the hundreds of covid regulations/laws that part appears.

  1. If you have XYZ symptoms {still the original misleading 3 or the newer ones the apps suggest????] ou must by law take a PCR. Or if you have XYZ symptoms you are advised to take a PCR etc etc So we knew which applied.
  1. If you have had 2 jabs but not 3 more than 14 days ago XYZ applies. If you have have had 3 more than 14 days ago the following applies.
CaveMum · 19/12/2021 10:10

Sorry if this has been mentioned, but are you on Facebook? Lots of local community groups have sprung up during the pandemic so that people can help out their neighbours. We’re on one where we live and I’m also on a group for the area my parents live in - they were CEV so shielding last year but neither was on Facebook. Through the group I was able to find a few wonderful people in their area who were able to do a bit of shopping and collect medication for them in the first few weeks before we were able to set up grocery deliveries for them.

People will want to help, reach out and ask.

cuparfull · 19/12/2021 10:11

What is your postcode or a nearby postcode for safety and see if anyone nearby can help. Many would help in a heartbeat Flowers

scooterbear · 19/12/2021 10:13

Milk and more saved me in this situation during lockdown 1. They have loads of stuff on there that the milkman will deliver. So sorry op x but sadly I think you will be far from being alone in this this year. I've had 5 seperate friends test positive this morning-all now buggered for Christmas

OnAWinterMorningFarAway · 19/12/2021 10:30

@oftenbaffled

if neither of you drive, how were you planning on getting in food even if your dh had not tested positive given you hadn't got an online slot?
My adult DS walks to the shops and carries it home in big, strong bags-for-life.

I'm disabled and when DP & car aren't available, I sometimes have a flurry of independence and do a trolley shop and ring a cab srvice from the supermarket (most have free phones in-store, or there are apps) and get it home in a cab - the drivers are very helpful with the bags.

SueSaid · 19/12/2021 10:33

Sorry your dh has tested positive Flowers.

This will be the situation for many this Christmas though and while it's no help to the op anyone reading this get your Christmas food in now! Why wait when there is every chance someone in your house could test positive.

Copasetic · 19/12/2021 10:33

Ocado say they have slots.

itsgoodtobehome · 19/12/2021 10:35

I think you were a bit naive not to have planned for this potentially happening. We are currently still planning to be away for Christmas, but I booked a slot about 2 months ago, and have a frozen turkey in the freezer just in case. Surely we have all learned from the last 2 years that we just never know when things might change, and to have a bit of a back-up plan?

DebIr · 19/12/2021 10:38

You can go to the shops if you’re doubl vaccinated and have had a negative lft. Would go now.

ancientgran · 19/12/2021 10:45

When we had to isolate I managed to get an order from Iceland, here they seem to have more availability than other supermarkets. I know they don't do quite the same range but might be worth having a look. The other thing I did was email my MP who passed my name to someone who was sorting out volunteering efforts. She contacted me and offered help, I didn't take her up on it as I'd managed to get the Iceland slot but it was good to know there was a back up.

Good luck, I sympathise 3 of my kids are spending Christmas with in laws, they live close, and my 4th was coming to us but now has covid so we changed plans to having Christmas at New Year when they can be here and now there is talk of a lockdown straight after Christmas. It is all so sad and I've had to downsize my Christmas order.

Bigfathairyones · 19/12/2021 10:53

Just checking - you only need to SI too, if you haven't had 2 COVID jabs. 7 days of LFTs instead now....rules changed a few days ago, but if you're fully jabbed, you haven't had to SI for a while now.

playmelikeasymphony · 19/12/2021 10:56

Locally we have a company called Driving Miss Daisy who were set up to provide transport and support - they have franchises all over and would go and pick up a click and collect or even take your list and shop for you (although that would cost more)

oftenbaffled · 19/12/2021 11:01

if no one in my household drove
i think i would have been the first in line to get a food delivery slot given... the situation!q2wer
