When will there be any clarity on lockdown?

Just wondering when people think we should expect to have an announcement on the lockdown rumours?

I am really struggling to process all of the uncertainty at the moment. Trying my best to enjoy Christmas, my favourite time of year, But I just feel like I have no idea what's going on or what to expect!

Isn't The Telegraph one of the places where kits are flown?

What's in their Comments section?

Less so than The Times tbh. The Torygraph tends to be more of an echo of Tory feeling.

The Times is looking pretty silent on the issue tonight, which does make me think we probably aren't going to hear anything more tomorrow now.

The rumour mill isn't wound up enough tonight.

Toadsinholes · 18/12/2021 22:16

@LidlMiddleLover would you like to pay my mortgage then? I can’t work if I’m closed down.

RedToothBrush · 18/12/2021 22:23

Generally speaking the line tonight seems to be

"Waiting for more data because the margin of error on predictions is just too unpredictable at this stage"

So its a flight holding pattern.

To an extent its because there is a stalemate in the Cabinet. It could still go the way of a damp squib - the suggestion that the most affected part of SA peaked on the 6th December is good news (though the rest of the country also has to peak). But equally it could go completely the other way yet.

I think overall the government don't want to make the more on patchy data (though Javid has said openly today that they may have to).

So they will push it as far as possible to be sure it really is going to go badly wrong.

In the meantime keep an eye on the staff shortage stories growing.

Sounds like we will probably have 2 or 3 more days before there is a move (if there is going to be one).

Thanks for this

I know it can change but it’s something

@LookNorthbyNorthWest

Many of us have already placed ourselves in lockdown - we are working from home, cancelling Xmas parties, deciding not to go to the cinema etc. Then there are those who are currently ignoring Omicron.
Or those of us who don’t have the luxury of working from home hardly ignoring Omicorn .

Tuesday is the day I am always telling DH to wait for, that is the day when the lag over the weekend tends to catch up, hospital admissions will be the one to watch for, the data on the Gov site hasn't been updated since the 13th as it is done weekly. Up until now it has been holding fairly steady.

ohreallynotreally · 18/12/2021 22:34

I think Boris will resign Monday and Lockdown will be announced Tuesday…he needs to go if the government stand any chance of the general public being sensible and listening to advise .

OrangeCrunch · 18/12/2021 22:35

@GrannytoaUnicorn, that's from Thursday though isn't it?

MollyQueenOfSocks · 18/12/2021 22:36

Why do they seem to think people will comply even after Christmas?

People will still go to new year parties and the like. No lockdown, 2 week circuit breaker or not, is likely to be complied with after what the tories have done.

the80sweregreat · 18/12/2021 22:37

It might be ok? Just ?
Depends on the figures ? Let's hope our NHS isn't overwhelmed and people don't need them as Omnicron is so mild
It's a waiting game isn't it?

EmKayEm · 18/12/2021 22:40

Locked up until March.

By a corrupt and incompetent fool.

The odd bit between Christmas and New Year is surely perfect circuit breaker time. Schools and Colleges are closed, lots of people on leave, less people on public transport. Most people are eating, drinking and mooching or walking outside. The parties of Christmas are over and New Year hasn’t happened.

'Locked up'? Bit dramatic. And why until March? What do you know?

I will not be abiding by no household mixing. Just no. My mum who is the most vulnerable member of our family has just had covid. We are all double jabbed and we are all boosted. My child is already home educated.

Unless I actually have covid (and we do test regularly), I'll be at my mum's for Christmas regardless of what the government say.

Gingerbreadhoose · 18/12/2021 22:58

I do think people need to be better informed about what constitutes covid safe though. For example:

  • those protective screens they have in shops = useless
  • cloth and surgical masks = useless
  • cleaning of surfaces = almost certainly useless
  • taking people's temperatures = useless

The two most important measures individual people and businesses could take which would actually help are ensuring FFP2 or FFP3 masks are worn in public indoor spaces and ensuring such spaces are properly ventilated.

And the government seriously needs to update the symptom list which is wildly out of date.

RedToothBrush · 18/12/2021 23:15

You know what doesn't scare me.
A lockdown.

What really scares me is the prospect of Steve Baker having a serious shot at being the next PM.

When slagging off Johnson be careful what you wish for...

Quite. Those calling for Johnson to go should think seriously about who they'd get as an alternative.

I thought the screens were helpful

I'm old compared to most MNers...I remember health studies on open plan offices. Take away walls and partitions and incidence of colds and coughs go up a lot.

Screens are like masks, I thought. They won't stop transmission but they give some protection which leads to less transmission.

Don't read the twitter account from sam coates from skynews twitter tonight.

You may have nightmares.

In actual fact the screens could be more of a hindrance than a help as they impede air flow.

@LookNorthbyNorthWest I am nit ignoring omicron I am dealing with my own mental health and doing what I believe is right. They may be different from your view and that is fine if you wish to stay at home stay at home. I meanwhile will continue test and meet up with my friends and family for the benefit of my health.
