When will there be any clarity on lockdown?

Just wondering when people think we should expect to have an announcement on the lockdown rumours?

I am really struggling to process all of the uncertainty at the moment. Trying my best to enjoy Christmas, my favourite time of year, But I just feel like I have no idea what's going on or what to expect!

The front page of 'The Herald' is reporting
Exclusive: Omicron crisis: Sturgeon set to recall Holyrood

I would sit tight and watch the rest of the Sunday Paper Cover to come in over the next hour or so.

My gut is they may announce something tomorrow evening, but I lean toward it being later in the week and it being strung out, to try and prevent too much behaviour change ahead of Christmas which will further inflame the situation.

Personally, from everything I'm hearing from various multiple directions, I am working on the assumption it will happen and not worrying about it beyond that as there isn't anything I can do to change it.

If we don't get more restrictions (and I stress the proposal sounds like Tier 2 rather than a full lockdown which is infinitely easier to cope with after living through it last year) then I think I will probably curb what we do anyway given the case numbers. So a quiet week or two either way from my point of view.

That way, I can prepare better mentally.

Tier 2 was no indoor mixing though, so pretty significant restrictions to have in place over Christmas.

RedToothBrush · 18/12/2021 21:26

@Maddymorphosis

Didn't we get restrictions last Christmas with about a day's notice?
Yes. Tiers did get changed with very little notice. I wouldn't be surprised if the government tried to hold out as long as possible about notice. Ideally they would want to announce it late Boxing Day. I think in reality it won't get that far, because too many people involved in will leak and the government which is already under pressure will have to come clean.

@RedToothBrush- all very well said 👏🏻👏🏻

Yeah. But we had an amnesty last year and I really don't think they will dare put into restrictions over Christmas again this year.

I've been saying that for several weeks and I'm still not shifting from that. The 27th is being touted a lot in the right circles and that would be roughly where I'd pin it anyway without those rumours.

@JovialNickname

There has been clarity. There isn't one. No one in any kind of authority has even suggested There will be. Please stop making these sorts of threads that scaremonger and say a lock down is imminent, when it absolutely isn't (unless a vocal minority like you shout enough about it, and cause Boris' highly reactive government to impose one "in response to public pressure")
Agree with you absolutely.
Garysmum · 18/12/2021 21:33

I expect it will happen. Not sure on exactly when - sooner would be best probably but "cancelling Christmas" is a political hot potato that might mean politicians chose not to act on scientific advice and as such the situation deteriorates rapidly.
As for format - anything between limited indoor mixing (2 families/rule of 6) and zero indoor mixing. I shouldn't imagine it will be as harsh as the first lockdown where there was zero mixing indoors and outdoors for a while.
Purely selfishly I hope support bubbles persist as they did through this year's lockdown and last November's lockdown. As a single adult that helped

Wednesdayafternoon · 18/12/2021 21:34

@elena3556 can you tell me how my thread is scaremongering when I'm literally asking if anyone can tell me when the rumours which are quite clearly out in the open for everyone to see/have access to will likely be cleared up?
There's no scaremongering. I'm not spreading rumours. Just makes no sense.

When you say you are 'Struggling to process all the uncertainty', what did you mean? No point worrying over what you can't control.

Sorry but I perceive your thread to be scaremongering. We don't know what will happen yet. We just have to wait and see.

AnneLovesGilbert · 18/12/2021 21:36

When the nudge is in the Sun, the Mail, the telegraph and times of course it’s bloody happening.

They’re softening us up and it’s working. People roll adapt their plans based on these “leaks” and won’t feel so shocked when it lands.

Sparklingbrook · 18/12/2021 21:37

How many threads is this now about a possible lockdown? Nobody knows, it's all speculation and guessing on here.

Wednesdayafternoon · 18/12/2021 21:38

@elena3556 it's a discussion about people's thoughts on what's going to happen and what to look out for. Not scaremongering.

OP posts:
Snowcov · 18/12/2021 21:38

The thing is, they would need to set out what a lockdown would achieve. If Omicronn is so contagious, we'll be back to where we are today 4 weeks after rules were lifted again. Someone said Sturgeon is due to recall Holyrood... Cases in Scotland are absolutely not growing exponentially this week. I don't see the point in a lockdown. I don't believe population that has had huge prior infection and a massive amount of triple vaccinated people requires the same rules as March 2020. And as I said already, lockdown is absolutely pointless when the disease is apparently so contagious. It will bounce back almost immediately post-lockdown.

JoanOgden · 18/12/2021 21:39

Really, it would be much better if they could announce the closure of indoor hospitality and entertainment now with a few days' notice and a proper financial support package.

Banning indoor mixing in private houses seems very over the top now so many of us are triple jabbed, and they must know many people would ignore any such ban.

elena3556 · 18/12/2021 21:39

Why would people want to speculate though.

thewhatsit · 18/12/2021 21:39

If there isn’t to be one they do need to put an end to the rumours as they are not helpful.

I’ve never been as busy as I was last December in the brief window between the second November lockdown and London being put into Tier 4. It was obvious another lockdown was coming so I crammed as much info those weeks as I could. I was thankful for it in Jan, Feb, March of course but still .. you’d think it was kind of counter productive to make blindly obvious to people that if they want to go to the pub over winter they’d better go now.

RedToothBrush · 18/12/2021 21:41

@Oblomov21

When you say you are 'Struggling to process all the uncertainty', what did you mean? No point worrying over what you can't control.
At the moment, the balance of probabilities now lean towards it happening, so thats precisely why I'm preparing accordingly. Plus its probably a sensible course of action regardless of whether I'm actually told not to do things.

That way, I do feel somewhat more in control of the situation.

Unlike previous, restrictions, I'm not expecting this one to be too prolonged which also makes it easier to cope with to a degree.

DH is probably going to invite a house guest for the duration to help him too.

Snowcov · 18/12/2021 21:42

And yes, as someone has said, Sturgeon has refuted that she is recalling Parliament on Twitter.

RedToothBrush · 18/12/2021 21:42

you’d think it was kind of counter productive to make blindly obvious to people that if they want to go to the pub over winter they’d better go now.

Absoluetely this. They will want to not say anything for as long as possible for this reason.

SusanHalf · 18/12/2021 21:44

Nicola Sturgeon has tweeted that the Herald headline isn’t true

RedToothBrush · 18/12/2021 21:52

Telegraph:

As the Government's scientific advisers called for an "immediate" curtailment of indoor mixing to combath the spread of omicron, the Prime Minister was considering a range of potential measures, from new guidance on restricting social contact, to a third national lockdown.

That reads we could have strong 'advisories' which aren't legally enforcable (and screw business), something in between which is more akin to Tier restrictions or a full lockdown.

I do think an approach in the middle is possibly where it will land (and will end up pleasing precisely no one).

Benjispruce5 · 18/12/2021 22:00

It will be announced when it’s too late , so anytime since last week.

Cheetosyummy · 18/12/2021 22:06

There won’t be any lockdown at all!
Boris said today that it’s all only wild gossip and wishful thinking of scared public and journalist.
He would never let it happen especially after he assured everyone to have a nice proper Xmas this year.
