Hospitalisations are always bad during winter, I expect everyone who goes in no matter what the problem is will be noted down as another covid patient.

I don't much like the idea of triaging either, but it's not actually any more unethical than vaccine passports, lockdowns, depriving kids of education, confining people to their homes or forbidding people from seeing their relatives. We've already done those things. A few years ago, we all would have thought they were unthinkable too. I can remember people whispering in hushed voices on here about the idea of vaccine passports and "no way, that is TOTALLY unethical." And yet, here we are, and they've been normalized, whether that's a good thing or not (probably not).

I still think all of the above interventions are unthinkable and should never have been implemented in a civilized and democratic society. I doubt I am alone. Using unethical, abhorrent policies to try and justify something even more inhumane, such as denying treatment to dying people, is not on @Kokshi123 and you should be ashamed of yourself.

My DD(8)'s Xmas present is to go to an outdoor event on the 30th Sad. The Harry Potter forest experience. What a bloody shame! (and now I'm mildly getting the twitch as to fill that surprise with something else).

I'm also panicking about Christmas with family. I'm now triple vaccinated, as are my parents. My DD(12) has had one dose. But there are other children there plus my sisters (who I don't think have been eligible for the booster until v recently). I have plans for the upcoming week I can't change. Not when this friend has travelled half way around the world! I am feeling so torn!

Are there any concrete stats that show if I was to pass anything on, my parents would be ok? The 85%...is that symptoms or serious condition/death?

rrhuth · 18/12/2021 08:12

@Largethighsbadeyes

It's not a circuit breaker if schools stay open though. Everyone knows that if schools are open it will continue to spread. It makes the other restrictions useless and means they will go on for longer.

I don't want schools to shut by the way but people need to realise that if they don't then there is no circuit breaker

This is the worry, that if they need to do something, schools are both: a) the most important thing to stay open and b) amongst worst places for transmission Sad
Hairwizard · 18/12/2021 08:13

They can get fucked. Will it fuck be just a circuit breaker. Bullshit. Useless. Business as usual here. To hell with that shower of cunts.

Remmy123 · 18/12/2021 08:13

Pointless

jgw1 · 18/12/2021 08:13

@PartyPrawnRingGames

If this happens I doubt it will be just 2 weeks.
If it does last two weeks it will be like last autumn, followed by a proper lockdown.
user1471530109 · 18/12/2021 08:14

And I would support further restrictions. I'm not sure a lockdown is worth it though? Surely tighter restrictions should be attempted first? The shops are packed and few are wearing masks. It should be changed from advice to mandatory. I bet it's the same people not vaccinated Hmm

goldenoldie1 · 18/12/2021 08:14

@WonderfulYou

A circuit breaker is fine, I think most people would be ok with that but the issue would be if it lasted longer than the 2 weeks which it probably would.

A big fat THiS

This is not true.

Posted this graph already - the much bigger bump is covid - different to every other year twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1469427334784634889

If you don't believe the case numbers that is covid denial. The figures are basically accurate.

ChristmasRobins · 18/12/2021 08:15

It's such a shame that we didn't vaccinate children properly when the rest of the world was doing it and instead spent months dicking about and then screwed up the roll out. We could be going into this with most 12+ double-jabbed rather than the current mess.

Justcannotbearsed · 18/12/2021 08:15

@RoseAndRose fair point.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 18/12/2021 08:16

The vaccine isn't vaccine is it ? Other vaccines do stop you catching a disease- know anyone that's had TB ? no me neither.
The jabs are just a treatment then are they? Get jabbed and you'll still get covid but mildly .
The government are lying through their teeth and treating us like fools
I'm not anti vaccine, I'll be getting my booster , but why are they pretending this is our way out , its clearly not .

neveradullmoment99 · 18/12/2021 08:16

Schools opening will be an absolute joke. Children will have peacemeal education because of covid at best. There will be no consistency to their eduction as teacher's juggle those who are off then in. With infections that high, we will become a babysitting service. Yes, I have 3 children and don't want them to miss out on schooling but I know what it is like to be in the classroom with covid. Its not like they will all be off at the same time! Children will be getting little education.
I also have no wish to sacrifice my own health for a job. Teachers who say this imo are young and not worried about catching the virus. So good for them. I am mid fifties and more at risk.

LadyIckenham · 18/12/2021 08:16

This is so depressing. Dd1 in isolation until Christmas Day and if this happens we won't see family at all over Christmas.

They are also talking about bringing back the sodding rule of six which is not great news for those of us who are families of six.

Govt has a habit of leaking to the Times though to plant ideas, so I can see it being true.

Would it change much?

They’ve mostly had delta recently

Omicron needs a booster doesn’t it to help with transmission- maybe a small reduction without not sure if any figures

I don't believe that most people would be ok with that. I certainly wouldn't.

I can't believe anyone who works in the Arts, or in hospitality/leisure/retails would be ok with even one day.

I’m so so sick of the whole thing now. I’m a TA and most of our staff (all bar 1) are desperate for schools to be back in January and not at all concerned about Covid. What we are concerned about is the education and mental well being of our children. I’m in Y2 with children who are like Nursery/Reception children, they can’t sit still, they can’t read, they can’t write and can’t do basic maths all because they missed out so much learning in Reception and Y1.
We cannot keep “locking down” like this for every single variant.*

Thank you for caring. I have 2 year 2 kids and most posts I read on mn say the exam years are the ones that matter. I mean they definitely DO matter but year 2 are the first group to have missed that much of the absolute foundations of learning. Most people seem to think that since they have the time they will just catch up. Sadly I'm not sure it's as easy as that. Schools can't be allowed to close again. Morally it has to be close everything else first, bring back furlough, prioritise schools staff for boosters, but please keep kids in school. Especially since they don't even get very ill.

Thank you both for some sanity in these dark times. I'm a teacher. We cannot shut schools again. Pupils' mental health is at an all time low. Just mentioning that there might be a two week 'circuit breaker' after Christmas made some of my students close to tears. I had to speak to a number privately to calm them down. 'i can't do it again' one if them told me. 'i won't do any work, I won't do it' another said. Lockdowns are not the kind option.

This, too.
Guacamole001 · 18/12/2021 08:18

Just why though? I thought there were just 10 admitted to hospital??

Madness.

Tis supposed doubling isn't going to stay high forever it will go down lower on its own.

neveradullmoment99 · 18/12/2021 08:18

Thankfully, I am part time. So grateful for that at least. Sadly, I cannot afford to leave and don't actually want to. I enjoy teaching but not in these conditions.

LadyIckenham · 18/12/2021 08:19

@neveradullmoment99 Whilst I sympathise with your position, if schools close many of us will have no choice but to sacrifice our mental health for a job. I'm self employed and don't get paid if I don't work and it's nigh impossible with children at home.

Not to mention the impact it is having on the children. Two of mine are Y2 and Y9 and yet to have a full year in their respective schools.

Deaths for Omicron have not happened yet.

It is mandatory.

That was days ago.
