We have had high case numbers

When people say SA is different due to recent wave surely we are similar?

Ceramide · 19/12/2021 13:21

There's loads of TB in certain parts of the world and every now and then we get outbreaks in the UK too.

And yet, unfortunately, the TB vaccine is no longer routinely given to children unless 'high risk', on cost grounds.

@Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas

I don't envy any if those at the top. It's such a fast moving fluid situation.
To be fair, they have had 2 years to perfect the response, its not as if new variants weren't expected and that acting quickly is the best way to go. BJ has no authority, he believes in Herd Immunity and certainly has done nothing to boost the NHS's capacity in preparation for this winter, in fact the opposite.

@Ceramide what? Kids don’t get the TB jab anymore?

@Ceramide what? Kids don’t get the TB jab anymore?

When my youngest was born in 2014, he was the only one of my three offered the BCG jab at birth because Queen Charlotte's hospital is in a high risk area (even though we didn't/don't live in a low risk area, back then or now).

Comefromaway · 19/12/2021 14:42

My kids are 17 & 20 & neither were offered the TB jab.

Only families who were classed as high risk (often immigrants who regularly visited countries where TB was prevalent) were given it.

Xenia · 19/12/2021 14:45

I paid £400 for my twins born 1998 to have the BCG as teenagers as the state had stopped it here and I wanted them to have the same protection as their older 3 1980s born siblings. We live in a very high risk area where most people are not white in London and many people come and go from some of the most TB infected places on the planet so I think it is short sighted they stopped it here.

As those of us against lockdowns have said since March 2020 - it may never end so would have been better to proceed without locking down even if more people die. 600,000 die a year int he Uk anyway and we all have to die of something. We used to call flu the old person's friend because it saw you off in a relatively gentle way when you were old.

bumbleymummy · 19/12/2021 18:54

@Emilyontmoor

Bumbley I hope you don’t work in the NHS. The people I know who do are very mindful not to spread any infection, not just Covid. We do of course vaccinate against flu.

However Covid is not flu.

You know that 70% of flu cases can be asymptomatic right? We don’t test for flu so chances are that in previous years, people have been working despite having flu. I certainly don’t remember people taking 10 days off every time they had a cold either. If people were sick, they stayed off, if not, they worked.

@Pixxie7

Something has to be done,my granddaughter has just caught Covid despite being vaccinated fortunately she is fine, but it does make you you wonder just how much efficacy the vaccines have.
Being vaccinated doesn't stop you from catching the virus. It reduces your symptoms as the virus can't get a hold of your cells so quickly.
