@Largethighsbadeyes

It's not a circuit breaker if schools stay open though. Everyone knows that if schools are open it will continue to spread. It makes the other restrictions useless and means they will go on for longer.

I don't want schools to shut by the way but people need to realise that if they don't then there is no circuit breaker

Of course it will still spread but much less so, which is the point, to reduce transmissions. Schools need to be open for the good of society.
@neveradullmoment99 Whilst I sympathise with your position, if schools close many of us will have no choice but to sacrifice our mental health for a job. I'm self employed and don't get paid if I don't work and it's nigh impossible with children at home.

Not to mention the impact it is having on the children. Two of mine are Y2 and Y9 and yet to have a full year in their respective schools.
But with a virus that is so infectious, they wont be getting an education.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 18/12/2021 08:21

Looks like we are heading to a circuit breaker for a couple of weeks then no doubt loads of restrictions before we release again. Instead of a roadmap to irreversible freedom let's call it a motorway to freedom as it will be an accelerated unlocking due to the 'success' of the Boosters.........could actually be due to the fact that Omicron is less severe but let's not shout about that!

We couldn't have made anymore of a mess of this again. We can't stop this variant and now we look like we will do something AFTER most people will already have caught it. Any lockdown post Xmas will be pointless. Again we get the pain of restrictions with no benefit to anyone (NHS INCLUDED)

If the models are correct (hard to believe now) snd we get 3,000 admissions a day then the NHS should deal with it. They will manage despite the current numbers in hospital. The main issue they have us staffing......well cut the isolation time down for staff if they are testing negative and feel ok

The scientists said they needed 2-3 weeks to review this. They are discounting the SA positive data and don't have enough here despite it being around for 4 weeks now. They are missing negative data because people are not dropping dead. Answer therefore must be more restrictions because....????

Not the point of the thread I know but I bloody love spending NYE indoors! No queue at the bar, no overpriced tickets, nice little buffet and just DH and DC to kiss at midnight!

@MarshaBradyo If children had been double-jabbed over the summer, we could start boosting them now.

What I don't understand about the boosters is whether they make up for waning immunity (so someone recently double jabbed is well protected as their immunity hasn't had time to wane) or whether it's the fact of a third dose that makes the difference.

neveradullmoment99 · 18/12/2021 08:22

To the above poster.
Schools have the hightest transmission.
Its not just the spread to pupils, its the spread beyond. To parents etc.

MoonlightFancy · 18/12/2021 08:23

God, this is all so scary. My husband owns a pub and restaurant with his family and bookings are being cancelled constantly. December is the month that allows them to survive January, when no one is going out but now everyone is being encouraged to stay away already with all this prioritisation on who you see. By the time this circuit breaker comes around I fully expect that we will have nothing left. I don’t want a lockdown but that feels like the only way our industry could possibly survive now, with the furlough.

Largethighsbadeyes · 18/12/2021 08:23

@Spikeyball

"It's not a circuit breaker if schools stay open though"

Schools remained open in the Nov 20 circuit breaker.

Yep! And it did fuck all. Remember Christmas last year?
Justcannotbearsed · 18/12/2021 08:25

Lots of people are reducing contact. French ski resorts closed to British tourists will also assist, people not travelling due to fear of lockdown. Called it lockdown by stealth or people making informed choices, it will all help in reducing transmission.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 18/12/2021 08:25

Closing the door after the horse has bolted won't do anything except make the hysterical lockdown lovers pipe down for a bit

AlecTrevelyan006 · 18/12/2021 08:25

Ultimately I think we now have to treat Covid like any other illness - if it makes you feel unwell then stay of. work / school but if you feel ok then just carry on

I wonder the same, I had my first 2 around June July, and have now had a booster buy elderly parents were very beginning of year and now have a booster. Am I better protected which seems mad?

It’s because there’s a mismatch between vaccine and omicron due to development for original strain. Booster floods with antibodies and protects more. So not due to waning so much. Which is why it’s so early after last

It’s mostly to protect from severe disease though and I’m not sure about transmission reduction

I think the priority is right atm - as boosters for more vulnerable people will help and higher priority as dc less likely to get severe disease

This 👆 We want our kids back in school, but surely not at the cost of increasing transmission?? What’s the point of locking down / circuit breaking if the the schools are still operating as a viral incubator.

Hopefully it’s this

We’re going to see big numbers and it’ll give people something to look to

In relation to South Africa, their population are generally younger. They are also thinking that prior infections have meant that the population have been more resilient to this new strain. You cannot compare like for like. They have no idea how virulent this new strain is.
neveradullmoment99 · 18/12/2021 08:30

I should say, within our uk population.

Overthebow · 18/12/2021 08:30

We wouldn’t be complying with a circuit breaker. We have a family visit planned with relatives we haven’t seen in a while and won’t be cancelling it.

LowPowerMode · 18/12/2021 08:31

Education setting = viral incubator, nice way to undermine your own country's education. We have to live with this virus. All the people who want to lock down, are you willing to live in lockdown for the rest of your lives? Because nothing will change this virus will keep mutating, vaccines will only be partially efficient. Happy to lock yourselves away for ever?

Cameron2012 · 18/12/2021 08:32

Both myself and my Husband are in hospitality.
Saying we can serve outside in January seems to be their let out clause to not pay furlough.

Overthebow · 18/12/2021 08:32

We especially won’t be cancelling our plans if schools stay open. Thousands of kids allowed to mix in large groups will mean a circuit breaker is useless. I’m not giving up our plans for a useless circuit breaker!

neveradullmoment99 · 18/12/2021 08:32

And then you will merrily send your children back to school....

I genuinely don't understand how you can do this, we are all so angry with the PM for acting like he is above the rules - do you not think you are equal to your fellow citizens?

Totally. Lock down by stealth. Is that not what they are saying. Prepare to be shafted by this Govt.
ChristmasRobins · 18/12/2021 08:33

@MarshaBradyo Thanks for that clear explanation.
