Not going to happen. Freedom day has past, the relaxation of restrictions was irreversible as stated quite clearly by Boris "what a man" Johnson.

Taking the mickey out of the Prime Minister aside, I don't think he has the guts to have a lockdown, it would be the end of him as Prime Minister as the 100 or so loonies in his parliamentary party who voted against public health measures would be up in arms again.

vera99 · 18/12/2021 07:51

Johnson's ends is already baked in the only question is how many of us he takes down with him on the way down. What are the odds he's going to get a breakthrough Omicron infection - pretty high I would have thought.

Ubiquery · 18/12/2021 07:51

I can't see this in The Guardian.

LowPowerMode · 18/12/2021 07:51

Face masks everywhere, social distancing, WFH where possible, limited household mixing e.g no more than 2-3 households, shopping and hospitality with strict SD adhered to - instead of lockdown, circuit breaker, whatever.

MarshaBradyo · 18/12/2021 07:52

Fark.

How nice to give us Christmas first

‘Circuit breaker’ god

Oh wow ! I think you’ve just written the next plot twist. Of course he will get it ! And will conveniently disappear from view to recover…again.

Something has to be done,my granddaughter has just caught Covid despite being vaccinated fortunately she is fine, but it does make you you wonder just how much efficacy the vaccines have.

The vaccines reduce symptoms, they don’t stop you getting it. So it worked.

LowPowerMode · 18/12/2021 07:55

Tackle the lack of healthcare staff by offering school leavers a subsidised gap year experience with free HCA training.

Justcannotbearsed · 18/12/2021 07:55

Chris whitty is suggesting that we limit contact. If Boris hadn’t fucked up so much he’d be suggesting the same, he can’t till Christmas is over.

Sally090807 · 18/12/2021 07:56

2 weeks will probably just keep being extended though, and if the vaccine works against the new variant then what’s the problem. 2 years on and we seem no further forward if covid cases are the highest they’ve ever been. Lockdown until yet another booster is probably what the government have planned.

RoseAndRose · 18/12/2021 07:56

It might stop you getting it at all. It should mean a much less severe form of the disease if you do catch it (unlikely to need admitting to hospital)

So yes, it sounds as though the vaccine worked.

MarshaBradyo · 18/12/2021 07:58

What are the details

I have googled

Plans are being drawn up for a two week circuit breaker after Christmas, which would ban indoor mixing and have the rule of six outdoors.

The two week circuit breaker would mean pubs and restaurants are allowed to open outdoors only.

Weddings would be limited to 15 people and funerals 30 during the potential circuit breaker.

So schools open, eating outside in winter etc, go to work but hospitality and other who has similar will like need financial support

Theatres etc I assume too

ChristmasRobins · 18/12/2021 07:59

Please let it be true that schools will stay open.

I hope so

Just trying to find info - the schools open was my interpretation of the bit I found - which seems to be more indoor mixing focussed ie socialisation

lljkk · 18/12/2021 08:02

The public were misled to believe everything was fine as we had 40k+ cases per day in the autumn

That was a sustainable situation.
It was a Good thing to let economy operate closer to normal for as long as long as possible.
Omicron didn't emerge in Africa because of any tolerance UK had for 40k cases/day.

Lack of vaccinations for poor people may have contributed to emergence of scary new variant in Africa. Because rich countries hoarded vaccines for their own populations.
So what is response of rich countries? To arrange to hoard even more vaccines for their own populations.
Couldn't make it up.

I wonder what would have happened if sustainability had been the guiding principle from start.

Largethighsbadeyes · 18/12/2021 08:03

It's not a circuit breaker if schools stay open though. Everyone knows that if schools are open it will continue to spread. It makes the other restrictions useless and means they will go on for longer.

I don't want schools to shut by the way but people need to realise that if they don't then there is no circuit breaker

Thatusernamewastaken · 18/12/2021 08:03

Might happen if the prospect is that or hitting worst case scenario of 6k dead a day.
If it needs doing then fine, not a big deal.

gettingolderandgrumpy · 18/12/2021 08:04

I will not be following any so called circuit breaker may it be be 2 days 2 weeks or 2 months . The whole thing is so farcical now with the rules and our politicians doing as they please it’s a big fat fuck no !!

passionfruitpizza · 18/12/2021 08:04

Surely the time for that to have made any difference was weeks ago?

MarshaBradyo · 18/12/2021 08:06

Well it seems a flexible term used to cover whatever

So if they do stay open they can keep the name afaic

Reports mention socialising and mixing

FutureHope · 18/12/2021 08:07

Please please keep the schools open.

The massive damage closing them causes is awful.

The thing to watch is surely hospitalisations, which won’t become apparent until early Jan.

PartyPrawnRingGames · 18/12/2021 08:08

If this happens I doubt it will be just 2 weeks.

Spikeyball · 18/12/2021 08:09

"It's not a circuit breaker if schools stay open though"

Schools remained open in the Nov 20 circuit breaker.

Did the vaccine make her symptoms more mild or was it the fact she is generally healthy, or was it the fact the virus has mutated and become less virulent?
