@Dontforgetyourbrolly

The vaccine isn't vaccine is it ? Other vaccines do stop you catching a disease- know anyone that's had TB ? no me neither. The jabs are just a treatment then are they? Get jabbed and you'll still get covid but mildly . The government are lying through their teeth and treating us like fools I'm not anti vaccine, I'll be getting my booster , but why are they pretending this is our way out , its clearly not .
Flu vaccine. That one also doesn't mean you won't get the flu (the hope is it would but not guaranteed) but if you do get the flu after being vaccinated then it should be much milder than it otherwise would have been.

Covid is the same. There has never been a guarantee that once vaccinated you wouldn't get covid. It is less likely but by no means guaranteed. Like the flu though the vaccine should mean a much milder illness than otherwise would have been.

When you look at the high cases in the autumn time you can see thar did not have the same impact on hospitalisation than previous peaks. The difference would be to do with the level of vaccinations.

sweetgingercat · 18/12/2021 12:39

For everyone pissed off with the government for its hypocrisy, you are not wrong! And the effective remedy for that is to punish them where it hurts most - not to vote for them again.

But this is a public health emergency. And it requires a different response. We need to protect vulnerable people and our health service. Otherwise people who have a heart attack, stroke, car accident or other life-risking events over the festive season and beyond may not receive the treatment they need.

If you refuse to lockdown in response to No 10 transgressions, then you are only hurting people Boris Johnson and the rest of his government couldn't give two fucks about.

@Emilyontmoor

jassixa In London many theatres and restaurants are already closing as a result of staff sickness and cancellations. It is a false dichotomy to equate lockdowns with economic damage. Uncontrolled or poorly viruses also do economic damage. One of my favourite restaurants have just closed both their branches (which usually have huge queues) because plan b has decimated footfall on top of rising food prices, supply issues, staff shortages, and now sickness, and the impact of the situation on the mental health of the staff they do have.
Many places because people are having to self isolate, not because they’re actually ill
User135644 · 18/12/2021 12:44

@peridito

And on the subject of rebellion in Parliament ....who is going to want to take over from BJ at this point ? Won't he be left to carry the can ?
They'll be making a play for it now, canvassing support, but they won't be dumping Boris until winter is out the way at least.
OrangeBananaFish · 18/12/2021 12:46

We might see an 8pm address to the nation again this week.

My guess is tomorrow night, but we'll hear all about on the front pages of the press tomorrow which will be leaked at 10PM tonight.

IWannaWishYouANutNutsChristmas · 18/12/2021 12:48

@AlecTrevelyan006

What exactly is the point of another lockdown/circuit breaker?

What would it be trying to achieve?

And what would be the reasons for ending it?

Ask the government who keep imposing them.

It baffles me that some folk get more livid with Independent Sage, or other Mumsnet posters for merely expressing their opinion than they do with the government who keep implementing shit covid strategies that result in twice yearly lockdowns.

Justcannotbearsed · 18/12/2021 12:49

The leaks show that no one is in control….

Emilyontmoor · 18/12/2021 12:49

Alec You no longer have to isolate as a contact if you are vaccinated? In all the workplaces I am familiar with staff are dropping like flies with Covid not because they are unvaccinated idiots who are having to isolate as a result.

RedToothBrush · 18/12/2021 12:49

@EmKayEm

Standard operating for this shambles of a government. Leak to the press, let it sit over the weekend, see what the chatter is. Make a decision based on what is least likely to affect popularity. We will have Christmas - but expect to be locked up for New Year and most of January - kids home-schooling - no pubs/clubs etc.
It wasn't leaking to the press first for once.

Hth.

Agree with questions

See if they get answered

rrhuth · 18/12/2021 12:51

@Nellodee

Why would we have a health service designed to cope with hundreds of thousands of admissions that we don’t usually have? That would be so incredibly wasteful in times when there was no pandemic.
Most other countries have much greater spare capacity, and the UK did too, until Cameron cut it and opted to run ICU at higher occupancy. Dickhead.

Sometimes I think "Big Cabinet Covid Briefing Today" is code for "Huge Covid Leak In The Papers Tomorrow"

Extraordinary Cabinet meeting today. He rarely does this so presumably it is a super-shit decision.
the80sweregreat · 18/12/2021 12:53

Nobody will listen will they? Not about meeting up at Christmas anyway.
They might be a bit more compliant after Christmas, but it'll still be a hard sell and people are skeptical now hearing any more bad news.
You only need to read the daily Mail comments pages to understand that people's feelings are running high and the general consensus isn't really one of compliance about this new variant
( I know it's the mail !)
We need to know how many are in hospital with Omnicron and the actual facts about that
We've been told that it's a mild virus and that has stuck with people too.
It is so difficult.

Depends where in the UK you are.
IWannaWishYouANutNutsChristmas · 18/12/2021 12:56

David Cameron fucked so much up.

It was his decision to privatise the strategic reserve storage of PPE for a pandemic that lead to most of it being lost or damaged or out of date when we actually needed it in 2020.

Still, it made a few bob for a Conservative Party donor though.

Emilyontmoor · 18/12/2021 12:58

Viking My original comment was specifically about London restaurants and entertainment closing because of losing footfall, supply issues and staff shortages and sickness.

steppemum · 18/12/2021 12:59

@IWannaWishYouANutNutsChristmas

The Netherlands are considering going into what I think is their first ever lockdown.
my dh is Dutch, they have had lots of lockdowns, they just look slightly different to ours
OMG12 · 18/12/2021 13:01

@Mummyoflittledragon

Why not impose a lockdown on the unvaccinated?

That penalises people like me, who is still suffering from 2 doses of AZ. Idk what the next one will do. Perhaps make me permanently bedridden. Do you think the medical profession cares about people like me?!

People don’t like to hear about the many people who are suffering after the first jabs (and therefore by definition not anti vaxxers) try telling a doctor of the many symptoms of auto immune disease that appeared out of no where within 2 weeks of vaccination and you’re basically told to shut up. There’s a fear that the vaccines are not the silver bullet, science might not be the 100% solution.

I’ve taken the booster and so far it doesn’t appear to have made things worse but tbh I’m more worried about that than covid.

As for the person suggesting the army go round and pin people down and inject them-I really hope they were joking! Do people actually think this?

rrhuth · 18/12/2021 13:04

Lots of firm denials of circuit breaker.

Is so hard to believe anything after last January's 'go to school' fiasco

Booklover3 · 18/12/2021 13:11

No I believe they will do it @rrhuth I just think they can go f* themselves. If they close services I won’t be able to use them directly… but otherwise I am just going to risk assess situations for my family and crack on… insofar as much as I obviously can.

I don’t think they will close anything because if they do they will have to fund it.

They want to have their cake and eat it too.

nojudgementhere · 18/12/2021 13:13

I think there are a small number of people who really do think like this. They seem to have lost any sense of proportion or common decency. What worries me more though is the people who are currently refusing to take on board how crazy this ' new normal' is. They are decent people and know deep down that vaccine passports/mandates/depriving children of education etc are horribly discriminatory and immoral but are happy to look the other way so long as none of the new legislation directly affects them. It reminds me of the famous quote 'The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing'.

the80sweregreat · 18/12/2021 13:15

Sky news had to say sorry , it's not a cobra meeting today about any circuit breakers , but just about data.

TokyoSushi · 18/12/2021 13:15

Lots of talk on Sky News about how 'its just a briefing on the figures' 'its not a meeting to make any firm decisions' But fairly obviously this 'briefing' on a Saturday isn't to say 'look at all these lovely graphs, everything's fiiiiiiiine!' I wish they'd just bloody get on and announce it, I have lots of things booked/planned for week of 27th, if these things don't go ahead it'll change this week as I might have a bit more money for a couple of extra presents etc, just say what's going on! Argh!
